Entomological investigations in Chichaoua: an emerging epidemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Morocco.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania tropica Wright seems to be an emerging disease in Chichaoua, a province located in southwestern Morocco. In this study, sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were collected from 12 stations. Sticky traps were placed in domestic, peridomestic, and sylvatic sites. In total, 3,787 specimens consisting of 10 species (seven Phlebotomus and three Sergentomiya) were identified. Phlebotomus perniciosus Newstead, the predominant species, was abundant, especially in mountainous areas. Phlebotomus sergenti Parrot (12%) was found in all studied villages where it was a

Seasonal abundance of ticks associated with indigenous goats on a northern Transvaal farm.

The 3 most abundant tick species on indigenous goats on a northern Transvaal farm were found to be Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma hebraeum. Three other tick species were present in small numbers. The economical and ecological importance of the ticks found on the goats, mainly in rural areas where chemical control of ticks is practically non-existant, is discussed. The high number of goats in the study area and the shift towards alternative methods of tick control, such as the use of resistant hosts, are important factors in the livestock industry of s

Aedes aegypti (L.) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) in Singapore City. 1. Distribution and density.

The distribution and density of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus in Singapore were assessed from extensive larval surveys carried out from 1966 to 1968 to evaluate their respective roles in the epidemiology of dengue haemorrhagic fever and to study their ecology in the urban areas. Ten urban areas where the majority of dengue haemorrhagic fever cases occurred were surveyed. The results showed that both species were common in the city, with Ae. aegypti being the dominant species. The distribution of Ae. aegypti was more uniform and related to the prevailing housing types and conditions. Its premis

The effects of box stocking density on the reproduction of female Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombini).

Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are important pollinators that are widely used for greenhouse crop pollination and are produced annually by commercial breeding facilities. In this study, we used the commercially important bumblebee species Bombus terrestris Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombini) to evaluate the effects of artificial box stocking density on the reproductive performance of newly eclosed females under commercial rearing conditions. Newly eclosed gynes and workers were artificially held in separate wooden boxes at different stocking densities (1 to 150 individuals per box for gynes and

The marginal male hypothesis explains only small amounts of spatial variation in density in pinnipeds.

The marginal male hypothesis is a mechanism proposed to explain gregariousness in pinnipeds. Here, we explore whether this mechanism, combined with density-dependent pup survival, can also account for heterogeneity in density across colonies, as observed in Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella). We built a discrete-time matrix model inspired by the Antarctic fur seal to investigate how differences in density between two colonies can emerge through mate choice and density-dependent pup mortality. Our model assumes a heritable male colony preference that is coupled to competitive ability,

Geographical dataset of questing nymphal density for three key tick vector species of Lyme disease.

Nymphal ticks of Ixodes pacificus, Ixodes scapularis, Ixodes ricinus, and Ixodes persulcatus are primary vectors of Lyme disease, which affects both animal and human health. Understanding their population dynamic is therefore critical for public health risk assessment. Here we present a focused dataset of questing nymph density, comprising 3579 records from 136 publications from 1980 to 2024. The dataset includes three tick species that represent major Lyme disease risk in the Northern Hemisphere. Records were compiled through systematic literature review and preserved original density measure

Flight phenology and influence of region and habitat on the abundance of Xylosandrus germanus and Anisandrus maiche (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) in New York.

The non-native wood-boring and symbiotic fungus-culturing Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) was first reported in New York apple orchards in 2013. Trapping surveys have been conducted annually since to assist growers in timely applications of preventative control measures. In 2021, a similar-looking introduced species, Anisandrus maiche (Kurentsov), was identified in traps in west central New York. Anisandrus maiche was first recorded in 2005 in Pennsylvania but its history in New York was unclear due to potential misidentification. We collected and identified ambrosia beetles using ethanol-bai

Factors shaping home ranges of Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in the Western Carpathians.

Understanding how large carnivores utilize space is crucial for management planning in human-dominated landscape and enhances the accuracy of population size estimates. However, Eurasian lynx display a large inter-population variation in the size of home ranges across their European range which makes extrapolation to broader areas of a species distribution problematic. This study evaluates variations in home range size for 35 Eurasian lynx in the Western Carpathians during 2011-2022 based on GPS telemetry and explains how intrinsic and environmental factors shape lynx spatial behaviour when fa

Influence of egg density on larval development and adult body size of cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis).

Fleas (Siphonaptera) are holometabolous insects with larval and adult stages that exhibit vastly different ecologies from each other. Adult fleas are parasitic and feed exclusively on the blood of a vertebrate host, whereas flea larvae do not live on hosts and consume dried faecal blood from adult fleas. Because flea larvae rely on adult flea faeces for food, excrement and eggs must fall in the same location; thus, larval density is likely high in these restricted habitats. However, the influence of larval density on the subsequent adult stage has not been examined. In the present study, we ut

A methodological proposal to estimate the total abundance of immature mosquitoes in discarded tyres: Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens as study cases.

Estimating the abundance of immature mosquitoes in discarded water-filled tyres is a laborious task due to their shape and size. Our objective was to develop a procedure that allows, by counting individuals in a water sample, to estimate their total abundance. Polynomial functions linking water column height and water volume were fitted for five tyre categories (from cars to tractors) and horizontal/vertical storage positions. A total of 358 discarded water-filled tyres were then surveyed using this method in 16 piles of tyres in temperate Argentina. Tyre capacity was greater in vertical than

Spatial variation in lymphatic filariasis risk factors of hotspot zones in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), a parasitic nematode infection, poses a huge economic burden to affected countries. LF endemicity is … Ghana. Mainly, land cover and socioeconomic variables such as proximity to inland water bodies and population density uniquely influenced LF transmission in the south. At the same time, poor housing was a distinctive risk factor in the north. Precipitation, temperature, slope, and poverty were common risk factors but with subtle variations in response values, which …

Town population size and structuring into villages and households drive infectious disease risks in pre-healthcare Finland.

Social life is often considered to cost in terms of increased parasite or pathogen risk. However, evidence for this in the wild remains equivocal, possibly because populations and social groups are often structured, which affects the local transmission and extinction of diseases. We test how the structuring of towns into villages and households influenced the risk of dying from three easily diagnosable infectious diseases-smallpox, pertussis and measles-using a novel dataset covering almost all of Finland in the pre-healthcare era (1800-1850). Consistent with previous results, the risk of dyin

Differential responses of sorghum genotypes to sugarcane aphid feeding.

The findings of this study suggest that known resistant sorghum genotypes compensate for feeding pressure of sugarcane aphid by maintaining/increasing photosynthetic capacity and/or have higher chlorophyll content than susceptible genotypes. Knowledge of the physiological response of sorghum, (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), to sugarcane aphid (SCA), Melanaphis sacchari (Zehnter) feeding will provide baseline information on defense responses and resistance mechanisms. This study documented the impact of SCA feeding on seven sorghum genotypes by measuring chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate,

Varietal Resistance Against the Rice Water Weevil in Field and Greenhouse Studies.

The resistance of commercial rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties widely grown in Louisiana was assessed against the rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), the major insect pest of rice in the United States, in a 5-yr field study that included conventional inbred, herbicide-tolerant, and hybrid varieties. Resistance was evaluated by comparing densities of immature rice water weevils (larvae and pupae) in root-soil core samples taken at two time points after flooding. Randomized block experiments were conducted in two different locations to enable identifi
