Risk of solid subsequent malignant neoplasms after childhood Hodgkin lymphoma-Identification of high-risk populations to guide surveillance: A report from the Late Effects Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) in childhood have an increased risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMNs). Herein, the authors extended the follow-up of a previously reported Late Effects Study Group cohort and identified patients at highest risk for SMNs to create evidence for risk-based screening recommendations. METHODS: The standardized incidence ratio was calculated using rates from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program as a reference. The risk of SMN was estimated using proportional subdistribution hazards regression. The cohort included 1136 patients

CB/CC diffuse lymphoma: a distinct subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma? A study of 1593 patients from a Danish population-based registry. Danish LYFO Study Group.

Between 1983 and 1993, 3165 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) were reported to the West Danish Lymphoma Registry (LYFO). Out of these, 148 (4.7%) were of the CB/CC diffuse subtype according to the Kiel classification. However, in the new European-American NHL consensus classification (REAL, 1994), CB/CC diffuse lymphoma was categorized as a provisional subtype only. In the LYFO material, death-probability curves show a significantly shorter survival in CB/CC diffuse than in CB/CC follicular. In order to detect further possible differences between CB/CC diffuse and other NHL subtypes, a num

Incidence, clinicopathological features and outcome of primary central nervous system lymphomas. Population-based data from a Danish lymphoma registry. Danish Lymphoma Study Group, LYFO.

BACKGROUND: Primary Central Nervous System lymphomas (PCNSL), a rare neoplasm accounting for only a small fraction of malignant brain tumors and extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL), seems to occur with increasing frequency in immunologically-normal as well as immunocompromised individuals. In an attempt to characterize the clinicopathological features, incidence rate and outcome of PCNSL, we here report our experience in a large unselected group of patients from a well-defined region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a Danish population-based NHL registry (LYFO) representing a population of 2.7

Japanese-style dietary patterns, mortality, and selected cancer outcomes in Japanese populations: a systematic review integrating meta-analysis, food-group loading visualization, and qualitative synthesis.

Japanese-style dietary patterns (DPs) are often regarded as healthy, but the food-group combinations needed to develop health-oriented Japanese-style DPs remain unclear. This systematic review synthesized associations between predefined (a priori) Japanese-style DPs and health outcomes in Japanese populations and used data-derived (a posteriori) DPs to examine outcome-specific heterogeneity in food-group composition and loadings. PubMed/MEDLINE and Web of Science Core Collection were searched for observational studies. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted for comparable a priori Japanes

Outcomes and associated risk factors among hospitalisations attributed to invasive group A streptococcal disease in Northern Queensland, Australia: a 21-year population-based data linkage study.

PURPOSE: Invasive group A Streptococcus (iGAS) disease is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess the outcomes of iGAS infection and associated risk factors in Northern Queensland, Australia. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using linked hospital data from 2000 to 2020. iGAS cases were identified using ICD-10-AM diagnosis codes in administrative health datasets. Mortality and disease burden were analysed, and risk factors for adverse outcomes were assessed using logistic regression and competing risks regression. Disability-Adjusted L

The relationship between virtual antenatal care and pregnancy outcomes in a diverse UK inner-city population: a group-based trajectory modeling approach using routine health records.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in major reconfiguration of maternity services, particularly an increase in virtual antenatal care. OBJECTIVE: We explored associations between virtual antenatal care trajectories and pregnancy outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Pregnancy and birth outcome data were obtained from a multiethnic and socioeconomically deprived UK inner-city population before and during the pandemic (with and without lockdown). Data were collected using a health record data linkage from the Born in South London cohort. Antenatal care was characterized by the number of outpatient c

Group 1 metabotropic glutamate receptor expression defines a T cell memory population during chronic Toxoplasma infection that enhances IFN-gamma and perforin production in the CNS.

Within the brain, a pro-inflammatory response is essential to prevent clinical disease due to Toxoplasma gondii reactivation. Infection in the immunocompromised leads to lethal Toxoplasmic encephalitis while in the immunocompetent, there is persistent low-grade inflammation which is devoid of clinical symptoms. This signifies that there is a well-balanced and regulated inflammatory response to T. gondii in the brain. T cells are the dominant immune cells that prevent clinical disease, and this is mediated through the secretion of effector molecules such as perforins and IFN-γ. The presence of

Outcome of limited-stage peripheral T-Cell lymphoma after CHOP(-like) therapy: A population based study of 239 patients from the Nordic lymphoma epidemiology group.

Peripheral T-Cell Lymphomas (PTCLs) are rare, aggressive lymphomas with poor outcomes, but limited-stage disease is infrequent and not well-described. This study reports outcomes and prognostic factors in limited-stage nodal PTCLs in a binational population-based setting. Patients were identified from the Danish and Swedish lymphoma registries. Adults diagnosed with limited-stage nodal PTCL (stage I-II) and treated with CHOP(-like) therapy ±radiotherapy between 2000 and 2014 were included. Medical records were reviewed by local investigators. A total of 239 patients with a median age of 62 yea

Invasive group A streptococcal infections in children and adolescents in Denmark during 2022-23 compared with 2016-17 to 2021-22: a nationwide, multicentre, population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A historic increase in paediatric invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections was reported globally in 2022. iGAS infections can lead to severe manifestations (eg, pleural empyema, necrotising fasciitis, toxic shock syndrome, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, and meningitis). We aimed to compare the incidence and severity of iGAS infections overall, for distinct clinical phenotypes, and for GAS emm variants in Denmark in 2022-23 with reference to the previous six seasons (ie, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22). Outcome of children and adolescents with a second or third relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL): a population-based analysis of the Austrian ALL-BFM (Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster) study group.

We analyzed outcome of a population-based cohort of 74 children with second and third acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) relapse and aimed to identify prognostic factors. Duration of previous remission and site of relapse appeared of prognostic relevance as patients with a second remission duration >1.5 years and isolated extramedullary relapse did better. Neither patient with a second bone marrow relapse who underwent previous allogeneic transplantation nor patients with T-cell ALL survived. Overall, 7 of 74 (9%) patients are in long-term remission. Stem cell transplantation seemed to be the

Survival probabilities of Pugh-Child-PBC classified patients in the euricterus primary biliary cirrhosis population, based on the Mayo clinic prognostic model. Euricterus Project Management Group.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Estimation of prognosis becomes increasingly important in primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) with advancing disease and also with regard to patient management. The ubiquitous used Pugh scoring for severity of disease is simple while the Mayo model which has been validated for survival estimates is more sophisticated. We wanted to investigate whether Pugh and Mayo scores correlate (they have 3 of 5 variables in common) and if so whether a survival probability based on Mayo data could be affixed on Pugh classes and scores obtained in the same patients. METHODOLOGY: All variables u

Seroepidemiologic studies of cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus infections in relation to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection in selected recipient populations. Transfusion Safety Study Group.

Antibodies to human cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) were evaluated among 1,171 persons with and without antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (anti-HIV-1). These included 97 blood donors, 577 persons given blood components or products, and 497 controls. A significantly higher proportion of anti-HIV-1 positive than -negative donors were anti-CMV-positive, a finding associated with homosexual contact among some of the former. Among subjects with treated clotting disorders, there was no difference in prevalence of anti-CMV or anti-EBV between anti-HIV-1-positive and

Evaluation of the United Kingdom-primary biliary cholangitis and global primary biliary cholangitis group prognostic models for primary biliary cholangitis patients treated with ursodeoxycholic acid in the U.S. population.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The United Kingdom-primary biliary cholangitis (UK-PBC) and global primary biliary cholangitis group (GLOBE) prognostic models have been recently developed to predict long-term outcomes in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). However, these predictive scores have not yet been well evaluated in the U.S. population. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed newly diagnosed PBC patients at the Cleveland Clinic between November 1998 and February 2017. Adverse events were defined as liver transplantation, liver-related mortality, and all-cause mortality. Transplant-free survival (TFS)

Long-term outcome of initially homogenously treated and relapsed childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in Austria--a population-based report of the Austrian Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM) Study Group.

Relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the most common cause for a fatal outcome in paediatric oncology. Although initial ALL cure rates have improved up to 80%, the prognosis of recurrent ALL remains dismal with event-free-survival (EFS) rates about 35%. In order to analyse a population-based cohort with uniform treatment of initial disease, we examined the outcome of children suffering from relapsed ALL in Austria for the past 20 years and the validity of the currently used prognostic factors (e.g. time to and site of relapse, immunophenotype). Furthermore, we compared survival rate
