Birth trauma in a population requiring inpatient mental health care in the postpartum period.

OBJECTIVE: This study explores rates of birth-related symptoms of trauma in a population of parents experiencing severe perinatal mental illness. METHOD: Birthing-parents admitted to a perinatal inpatient unit completed birth trauma measures on admission which were descriptively analyzed. RESULTS: The population had higher rates of birth-related potentially traumatic events and trauma-related symptoms than the general population. CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlight that assessing for and responding to experiences of birth trauma is highly relevant to an inpatient perinatal population.

They compromise the supportive structures of teeth and are influenced by both local and systemic factors. This study aimed to systematically assess the impact of systemic conditions on periodontal health in Malaysian population, addressing the gap in understanding these factors as potential risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective, non-interventional study was conducted using medical records from Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kelantan, from September 2019 to

In-Hospital Drug Use Affects a Broad Patient Population and the Health Care System.

INTRODUCTION: Patients who suffer from addiction sometimes take illicit substances while in the hospital (in-hospital drug use [IHDU]), which can lead to unnecessary work-up and preventable treatments when symptoms develop. The purpose of this study was to define the frequency and scope of this problem, who it affects, and its impact on the medical system. METHODS: We reviewed all incident reports from our large, urban level 1 trauma center that involved a patient being found with illicit substances in the hospital between January 2020 and January 2023. Reports were included if patients were

How Does Digital Integration Influence the Mental Health of Low-Income Populations?

Background: In recent years, the growing prevalence of digital technology has transformed every aspect of life, including mental health care and support. Digital integration-referring to both access to digital technology and the utilization of digital tools in daily life-has the potential to alleviate existing health inequalities, a phenomenon that has been labeled the 'digital divide'. It is, therefore, imperative to gain an understanding of the mental health dynamics of vulnerable groups in the context of the digital age if we are to develop effective policies and interventions. Objectives:

Estimation of the Dietary Acrylamide Exposure of the Turkish Population: An Emerging Threat for Human Health.

Acrylamide is a contaminant formed during heat treatment that poses potential health risks and occurs naturally in foods. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate exposure from the consumption of foods containing acrylamide since dietary exposure continues throughout life. In this study, the acrylamide exposure level of people living in Türkiye is estimated. Consumption of a total of 28 foods in 9 different food groups was calculated using a deterministic model under two different scenarios. The exposure levels were evaluated in terms of carcinogenic, non-carcinogenic and neurotoxic health risks.

Identification of the health education targeted susceptible population of tuberculosis in Ningxia, Northwest China.

Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) survey, as an effective measure tool, is of practical significance for identifying the susceptible population in high-incidence regions of tuberculosis (TB). We aim to identify the health education targeted susceptible population of TB and discuss the acting pathway of KAP in Ningxia. A multistage random sampling method was used to conduct a face-to-face questionnaire survey for residents. The latent class analysis (LCA) model was used to classify susceptible populations of TB, and the structural equation modeling (SEM) model was also employed to investi

Social Determinants of Health Associated with Intimate Partner Violence in an Urban Obstetric Population.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is pervasive and can lead to severe health consequences. In the United States, 25% of women have experienced sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner. However, less is known about the frequency and risk factors for IPV in the obstetric population.Nested case-control study from a prospective cohort study of 606 parturients at a single academic medical center from 2011 to 2022. Structured questionnaires were administered to randomly chosen, consented patients during their postpartum hospital stay to gather information on social de

Postpartum Access to Health Care and Opioid Use Treatment: An Evaluation of a Medicaid Population.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed to examine postpartum health care utilization and identify gaps in care among a postpartum Medicaid population of patients diagnosed with opioid use disorder (OUD) during pregnancy. METHODS: We queried North Carolina Medicaid medical and pharmacy claims to identify individuals with a live delivery and evidence of OUD during pregnancy from 2015 to 2019. We examined any evidence of postpartum health care utilization and evidence of medications for OUD (MOUD) during postpartum. We also determined the impact that 4 factors may have had on these outcomes: type o

Population health and sociodemographic variables as predictors of access to cardiac medicine and surgery in Haiti.

BACKGROUND: In Haiti, cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with congenital and rheumatic heart disease comprising a large portion of disease burden. However, domestic disparities in cardiac care access and their impact on clinical outcomes remain poorly understood. We analyzed population-level sociodemographic variables to predict cardiac care outcomes across the 10 Haitian administrative departments. METHODS: This cross-sectional study combined data from a 2016-17 Haitian national survey with aggregate outcomes from the Haiti Cardiac Alliance (HCA) database (

Health Status and Quality of Life in the Population near Zhezkazgan Copper Smelter, Kazakhstan.

BACKGROUND: The industrial city of Zhezkazgan is one of the most important cities in the industrial sector and the most polluted city in the Republic of Kazakhstan. There is placed Kazakhstan's largest copper smelter. The entire technological process (extraction, crushing, grinding, purification, and smelting of pure ingots) of the production of the copper smelter releases into the environment mainly various kinds of solid particles, sulfur oxides (SOx), and various carcinogenic elements. Emissions from the industrial facilities extend to a significant area around the city, combined with other

Prevalence, incidence, and health care utilization of patients with narcolepsy: a population-representative study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Previous estimated prevalence of narcolepsy in Europe was 47 patients per 100,000 persons, with a yearly incidence of 0.64-1.37 per 100,000. However, analyses of representative datasets from large cohorts are limited. This study aimed to estimate the population-based diagnostic prevalence and incidence of narcolepsy in Germany and to describe these patients and their health care resource utilization. METHODS: This study used the InGef research database, an anonymized representative dataset of 4 million persons covered by statutory health insurance in Germany. Patients with c

Measurement of depression in the Brazilian population: validation of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8).

We aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8). A study with a sample of 4,170 individuals (≥ 15 years old) from the urban area. Conglomerate sampling was adopted in two stages (census sectors and streets), with weighting of estimates by sample weights. A structured questionnaire with sociodemographic data, the PHQ - the modules for depression, generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder - and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) were used. In the evaluation of the PHQ-8, we verified the construct validity by analy

Identifying vulnerable populations with symptomatic cholelithiasis at risk for increased health care utilization.

BACKGROUND: Gallstones are a common problem in the United States with many patients suffering from symptomatic cholelithiasis (SC). Patients with SC may first present to the emergency department ED) and are often discharged for elective follow-up; however, it is unknown what system and patient factors are associated with increased risk for ED revisits. This study aimed to assess longitudinal ED utilization and cholecystectomy for patients with SC and identify patient, geographic, and hospital characteristics associated with ED revisits, specifically race/ethnicity and insurance status.
