Infectious coryza (IC) is an economically important, acute, and highly contagious respiratory disease of chickens caused by Avibacterium paragallinarum. A case of 27-week-old table egg layers was submitted to the Diagnostic Services Unit, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary (Alberta). The chickens had a history of swollen faces, eyelids, combs, and wattles; lacrimation; and nasal discharge with increased mortality and an acute drop in egg production of up to 14%. Avibacterium paragallinarum was cultured from infraorbital sinuses and wattle samples. Whole-genome sequencing bas

Several mechanisms have been suggested for the development of hypoxemia in cirrhosis. A few patients of portal hypertension due to non cirrhotic liver disease with cyanosis have also been reported earlier. We report probably the first documented case of portal hypertension with portal cavernoma and a normal liver, who had intrapulmonary vascular dilatations leading to hypoxemia and cyanosis. Our case suggests that changes leading to hypoxemia can occur due to portal hypertension alone, in the presence of a normal liver.

Radioisotopic splenoportography was performed in 55 patients with portal hypertension, in whom 52 had various degrees of esophagogastric varices, and in 20 patients without portal hypertension. In the patients with varices, collateral images were obtained in 50 patients (96%) by this method and no image was obtained in the patients without varices. The rate of positively imaged collaterals was as follows: Esophageal varices 69%, the left gastric vein 85%, the short gastric veins 48%, RI stasis in esophagogastric region 65%, the azygos vein 46%, the subclavian vein 25%, the para-umbilical veins

Radio-isotopic splenoportography was performed by injecting 99mTcO4- into the spleens of 46 patients with portal hypertension and 14 patients with various disorders not having portal hypertension. No collateral circulation was demonstrated in the 14 patients without portal hypertension whereas some RI-images of portosystemic collaterals were found in 40 (87.0 per cent) of the 46 patients with portal hypertension. Collaterals were divided into an ascending group and a descending group, the appearance rate of ascending collaterals being 80.4 per cent and that of descending collaterals, 41.3 per

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a recently discerned endogenous signaling molecule that modulates the vascular system. Endogenous hydrogen sulfide has been shown to dilate both the mesenteric and portal vasculature. Gut microbiome, via sulfur reducing bacteria, is another source of H2S production within the gut lumen; this source of H2S is primarily produced and detoxified in the colon under physiologic conditions. Nitric oxide (NO), a major endogenous vasodilator in the portal circulation, participates in H2S-induced vasodilation in some vascular beds. We hypothesize that jejunal but not colonic H2

BACKGROUND: In contrast to an acute occlusion of the visceral arteries, which is the most important differential diagnosis for an occlusion of the portal venous system and which poses a highly dangerous situation ending in gangrene of the bowel wall, the symptoms of an acute occlusion of the portal venous system are quite unspecific. To rule out an acute arterial occlusion, diagnostic evaluation has to be carried out quickly in order to decide on the necessity of therapeutic steps concerning a recanalization of the occluded vessels. Only few therapeutic options are available to recanalize and

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of cellophane banding of single congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts in dogs using transcolonic portal scintigraphy. To investigate the portal circulation of those dogs with elevated postoperative shunt fractions to determine the cause of the persistent shunting. Further, to evaluate whether presenting signs, clinical pathology findings and liver histopathology are predictive of outcome.
DESIGN: Prospective study of 16 dogs presenting with single congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts.
PROCEDURE: Dogs with single extrahepatic portosystemic sh

Ectopic varices are a rare sequelae of portal hypertension and present in unique ways, which may not always prompt consideration. Furthermore, endoscopic interventions on venous collaterals in the setting of portal hypertension affect the portal system hemodynamics, which may further complicate the clinical picture. We report a man with decompensated hepatitis C cirrhosis who developed hemocholecyst complicated by perforation with hemoperitoneum soon after endoscopic variceal ligation of the esophageal varices in the setting of retrospectively discovered gallbladder varices.

Neonatal cerebral infarction is a serious and disabling condition. It is extremely rare if it occurs in association with portal vein thrombosis. We are reporting 2 cases of neonatal cerebral infarction with this etiology. The unique mechanism of cerebral infarction will be discussed. We propose that in the absence of any identifiable cause for the cerebral infarction, portal vein thrombosis should be considered and a Doppler sonography for the portal system is worth carrying out to confirm the diagnosis.

The clinical application of contrast enhanced (CE) MR was evaluated. A total of 66 CE MR portograms were obtained by performing fast imaging with steady procession (FISP) technique on a 1.5-T Siemens magnetom vision. A maximum intensity projection algorithm was also employed to include all vessels in a single image. The patency of portal venous system, the presence and extent of varices were also evaluated. The results showed that all images had diagnostic quality. Main portal vein (MPV) and its 4th-6th level intrahepatic branches were visualized in 10 normal persons serving as control. The di

The haemodynamic effects of nipradilol, a new non-selective beta-adrenoreceptor blocker with vasodilating actions like nitroglycerin, were examined in rats with portal hypertension due to portal vein stenosis. Portal hypertensive rats were divided into five groups receiving infusion of placebo, 3 mg of propranolol, 300, 600 and 1200 micrograms of nipradilol. At its highest dose, nipradilol achieved a reduction of 34.4 +/- 4.4% in heart rate which was similar to that in the propranolol group (36.5 +/- 2.4%). Also for other systemic haemodynamic parameters, the nipradilol 1200 micrograms group e

The surgical management of portal hypertension depends on the location of the obstruction. Suprahepatic obstruction is usually optimally treated by a surgical portacaval shunt. In extrahepatic obstruction the treatment should be sclerotherapy. For intrahepatic obstruction in emergency situations, sclerotherapy is the first choice, with portacaval systemic shunts or transjugular intrahepatic portal systemic stent shunt the second option. Liver transplantation in other situations should, if possible, be considered ahead of a portal diversion.

A review of the pathophysiology of variceal bleeding, with a discussion of the pathogenesis of portal hypertension, formation of varices, and bleeding from varices. Portal hypertension results from increases in portal flow and portal vascular resistance. The factors increasing portal blood flow are primarily humoral. Resistance to portal flow has fixed and variable components. Elevated portal pressure leads to variceal formation. Variceal bleeding is dependent on portal pressure, variceal size, and variceal wall thickness.

Twenty hepatic infarction cases selected from 5420 consecutive autopsy cases were investigated to clarify the pathogenetic aspects of this disease. Additional postmortem angiological studies of 24 normal human livers obtained at autopsy were also further performed to analyse the effects of blocking vascular structures on lesion development. Seventeen of the 20 cases (85%) were clinically associated with systemic circulatory insufficiency, especially hepato- and/or renal failure. Histopathologically, there was a significantly closer relationship between the location of infarcted regions and por

Abdominal surgery in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension is associated with high incidence of disease and mortality. In these patients, oncological gastric procedures with lymph-nodes dissection show much higher complication rates than in normotensive portal vein patients. Thus, normalization of portal vein pressure may be a favorable determinant factor to reduce complications. We report a case of a patient with hepatitis C virus-related hepatic cirrhosis, esophageal varices, portal hypertension and gastric cancer. We demonstrated the efficacy of a preoperative trans-jugular porto-syst

Portal hypertension is caused by an increased intrahepatic resistance, a major consequence of cirrhosis. Endothelial dysfunction in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) decreases the production of vasodilators, such as nitric oxide, and favours vasoconstriction. This contributes to an increased vascular resistance in the intrahepatic/sinusoidal microcirculation and develops portal hypertension. Portal hypertension, in turn, causes endothelial dysfunction in the extrahepatic, i.e. splanchnic and systemic, circulation. Unlike dysfunction in LSECs, endothelial dysfunction in the splanchnic
