Susceptibility of herons (family: Ardeidae) to clade 2.3.2.1 H5N1 subtype high pathogenicity avian influenza virus.

The pathogenicity of the H5 subtype high pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) in Ardeidae bird species has not been investigated yet, despite the increasing infections reported. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the susceptibility of the Ardeidae species, which had already been reported to be susceptible to HPAIVs, to a clade 2.3.2.1 H5N1 HPAIV. Juvenile herons (four grey herons, one intermediate egret, two little egrets, and three black-crowned night herons) were intranasally inoculated with 106 50% egg infectious dose of the virus and observed for 10 days. Two of the fo

Impact of Immunoglobulin Therapy in Pediatric Disease: a Review of Immune Mechanisms.

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) provides replacement therapy in immunodeficiency and immunomodulatory therapy in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. This paper describes the immune mechanisms underlying six major non-primary immunodeficiency pediatric diseases and the diverse immunomodulatory functions of IVIG therapy. In Kawasaki disease, IVIG plays a major, proven, and effective role in decreasing aneurysm formation, which represents an aberrant inflammatory response to an infectious trigger in a genetically predisposed individual. In immune thrombocytopenia, IVIG targets the underlying

A unified spectrum model for the anti-GQ1b antibody syndromes: from pathophysiology to a new diagnostic framework.

BACKGROUND: Bickerstaff Brainstem Encephalitis (BBE) is a rare, post-infectious autoimmune disorder characterized by ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and altered consciousness. Its significant clinical and serological overlap with Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) creates diagnostic challenges, particularly in atypical or seronegative presentations. These conditions are collectively understood as components of the anti-GQ1b antibody syndrome, a spectrum of neuro-immune disorders. AIMS: This review provides a clinically focused, integrative synthesis of the anti-GQ1b antib

Comparison of long COVID, recovered COVID, and non-COVID Post-Acute Infection Syndromes over three years.

BACKGROUND: Comparing the characteristics of patients with long COVID to those with other post-acute infection syndromes (PAIS) could potentially provide clues to common underlying disease processes that may affect patient recovery. METHODS: We identified records of patients who had documented SARS-CoV-2 tests in the University of Washington Medicine electronic health record (EHR) database from January 1, 2019, through January 31, 2022 (n = 139,472). Patients were classified into three groups: 1) long COVID defined by a positive SARS-CoV-2 test and a long COVID-related diagnosis code (n = 580

Precision nutrition to reset virus-induced human metabolic reprogramming and dysregulation (HMRD) in long-COVID.

SARS-CoV-2, the etiological agent of COVID-19, is devoid of any metabolic capacity; therefore, it is critical for the viral pathogen to hijack host cellular metabolic machinery for its replication and propagation. This single-stranded RNA virus with a 29.9 kb genome encodes 14 open reading frames (ORFs) and initiates a plethora of virus-host protein-protein interactions in the human body. These extensive viral protein interactions with host-specific cellular targets could trigger severe human metabolic reprogramming/dysregulation (HMRD), a rewiring of sugar-, amino acid-, lipid-, and nucleotid

A pilot randomized controlled trial of PrEP Zingisa: Protocol for an adherence intervention that addresses transdiagnostic psychological barriers to consistent PrEP use during pregnancy and the postpartum transition among women in Cape Town, South Africa.

BackgroundSouth Africa has the largest HIV epidemic globally, and pregnant and postpartum individuals face high risk for new infections. Although daily pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective in preventing HIV, adherence during pregnancy and postpartum is often compromised. Depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), common in this population, can interfere with PrEP use. Evidence-based approaches addressing psychological barriers are needed to improve PrEP adherence and persistence during this high-risk period.ObjectivesThis paper describes the protocol for a pilot trial to exam

Epstein Barr Virus: Development of Vaccines and Immune Cell Therapy for EBV-Associated Diseases.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the first human tumor virus discovered and is strongly implicated in the etiology of multiple lymphoid and epithelial cancers. Each year EBV associated cancers account for over 200,000 new cases of cancer and cause 150,000 deaths world-wide. EBV is also the primary cause of infectious mononucleosis, and up to 70% of adolescents and young adults in developed countries suffer from infectious mononucleosis. In addition, EBV has been shown to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. An EBV prophylactic vaccine that induces neutralizing antibodies

Exploring the Link Between Periodontitis and Alzheimer's Disease-Could a Nanoparticulate Vaccine Break It?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder, as approximately 55 million people worldwide are affected, with a significant tendency to increase. It reveals three main pathological features: amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and neuroinflammation, responsible for the neurodegenerative changes that slowly lead to deterioration of personality and cognitive control. Over a century after the first case report, effective treatments remain elusive, likely due to an incomplete understanding of the precise mechanisms driving its pathogenesis. Recent studies provide
