A large proportion of drugs used for the treatment of neurological disorders relate to naturally occurring compounds, many of which are plant alkaloids. This is particularly true of Parkinson's disease (PD). The pharmacopoeia of PD has strong botanical origins, while major discoveries about the neurochemistry of the basal ganglia came from the study of phytochemicals. This article narrates the development of pharmacotherapy for PD in terms of historically important plant-derived substances-tropane and hamala alkaloids, reserpine, levodopa, apomorphine, and ergoline dopamine receptor agonists.

In the following study, we came up with and validated a prompt, sensitive and precise method for the simultaneous determination of 56 antimicrobial drugs (tetracyclines, sulfonamides, β-lactams, macrolides and quinolones) using the ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Pregnant women residing in areas impacted by the Chornobyl ionizing radiation of the Rivne Province in Ukraine have persistent higher levels of incorporated cesium-137. In these areas the neural tube defects and microcephaly rates are significantly higher than in areas with lower maternal cesium-137 incorporated levels. In two Rivne counties with populations proximal to nuclear power plants the rates of neural tube defects and microcephaly are the highest in the province. The neural tube defects rates in Rivne are persistently among the highest in Europe.

This paper presents a modified method of an operationally determined speciation of mercury in soil. The analytical work was mainly concerned to suit properly with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Soil samples analysed in this study were selected from open areas around a crematorium, a waste incinerator, and two power plants. Results show that both topsoil and subsoil samples were dominated by elemental mercury Hg(0) and mercuric sulphide (HgS). The significant correlation between sulphur concentration and HgS was found in topsoil samples.
