Cultures of Streptococcus equisimilis (Lancefield group C) from three outbreaks of illness were found to carry the T-protein antigen 204. Strains of this type were not otherwise represented in a collection of 743 cultures of these 'pyogenes-like' streptococci isolated from other outbreaks of infection or as random isolates. Glutathione transferase activity in the cytosolic fractions of human lung tumors was found to be significantly higher than that present in the corresponding non-tumor cytosolic fractions. Platelet lysates were obtained from suspensions of normal washed platelets by freeze-thawing or Triton X-100 lysis. Antibodies to whole pigeon serum (PS) and pigeon dropping extract (PDE) were investigated in pigeon breeders and controls by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The optimal antigen concentration was in the range of 3-30 microgram protein/ml for both PS and PDE. PDE antibody titres greater than or equal to 10240 were found in three (75%) of four patients with pigeon breeders' disease (PBD) and in 19 (13.6%) of 140 other pigeon breeders (P = 0.011). Isoelectric focusing (IEF) studies on pigeon dropping extracts (PDE) revealed that it is a complex mixture of components that are acidic in nature. Active histoplasmosis is rarely diagnosed in Great Britain. We present the illness records of three patients with disseminated histoplasmosis. In two patients the infection was discovered at necropsy and resulted in caseous destruction of the adrenal glands, and in one of these there was also fungal invasion of the liver and wall of the aorta. The third patient had Addison's disease and also a chronic tongue ulcer from which the fungus was cultured by biopsy. In order to develop a rapid, simple immunodiagnostic assay for schistosomiasis, soluble egg antigen (SEA) of Schistosoma japonicum was conjugated with a blue colloidal dye (D-1) produced in China and used to detect antibodies in the sera of schistosomiasis patients. Two methods of detecting circulating immune complexes (CIC) in serum, the Protein A-glass fiber filter assay (PA-GFF) and the polyethylene glycol (PEG) insolubilization assay, were compared using a model system of BSA/anti-BSA.
