A Multi-Disciplinary Review on the Aerobiology of COVID-19 in Dental Settings.

The COVID-19 pandemic pushed dental health officials around the world to reassess and adjust their existing healthcare practices. As studies on controlled COVID-19 transmission remain challenging, this review focuses on particles that can carry the virus and relevant approaches to mitigate the risk of pathogen transmission in dental offices. This review gives an overview of particles generated in clinical settings and how size influences their distribution, concentration, and generation route. A wide array of pertinent particle characterization and counting methods are reviewed, along with the

Sikhs in Minnesota: Dental Care Access, Ethnicity, and Acculturation.

To explore the dental care experiences of one of Minnesota's ethnic communities, the authors conducted pilot study among members of Sikh temple. The Sikhs, a religious group from the Punjab region of India, number roughly 1,500-2,000 individuals in the Twin Cities. Forty-seven adults from the Bloomington, Minnesot temple completed the survey, which was administered during interviews with one of the authors, himself a Sikh. Respondents, who ranged in age from 29 to 92, have been in the United States for an average of 16 years, and had educational backgrounds ranging from undergraduate, Masters,

The Effects of Untreated Caries on Oral-Health-Related Quality of Life and Body Mass Index in 11-12-Year-Old Children.

OBJECTIVES: Untreated dental caries is a very widespread childhood disease that can damage the quality of life (QoL), growth, and education, while increasing healthcare costs. This study aimed to determine whether untreated and current dental caries affect both QoL and growth and development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 145 systemically healthy children aged 11-12 who visited the Pediatric Dentistry Department at Marmara University. Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated using height and weight and categorized as underweight, normal, or overweight. Oral Health-Rel

Oral Health Preventive Knowledge and Behaviors in Relation to Caries Status Among Iraqi Dental Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Knowledge and attitudes toward oral health, shaped by personal experiences, social context, family traditions, life events, and health education programs, are fundamental determinants of oral health behaviors. This relationship is mediated by beliefs, values, and skills, whereby individuals with sufficient knowledge and positive attitudes are more likely to engage in effective self-care practices.  Aim This study aims to assess the relationship between dental students' oral health knowledge and behaviors and their caries level. Materials and methods The study subjects in this cros

The Impact of Prolonged Dental Chair Utilization on Cervical Spine Mobility and Pain among Dental Internship Students: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study from the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: Dentistry is considered a high-risk profession for developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), particularly in the cervical region, due to prolonged static postures, repetitive movements, and sustained neck flexion during clinical procedures. Limited evidence exists regarding the early short-term effects of prolonged dental chair utilization on cervical spine mobility among dental interns. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in cervical spine range of motion (ROM) and neck pain associated with prolonged dental chair utilization among dental internship students . METHODS:

Staging-dependent dysbiosis of plaque microbiota in early childhood caries.

OBJECTIVES: The stage-specific ecological and functional microbial features of ECC remains poorly defined. This study aimed to characterize the lesion-associated microbiome and evaluate stage-specific microbial signatures of ECC. METHODS: Paired supragingival plaque samples were collected from an active cavitated lesion (caries) and a spatially-matched intact surface (control) of 84 ECC-affected children aged 3 - 4 years. Lesions were classified by depth as enamel caries and dentine caries. Microbial profiles were generated by 16S rRNA sequencing and analysed for community diversity, structur

Maternal knowledge and oral health status in relation to the oral health status of children.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Children’s oral health is a crucial aspect of their overall well-being and is significantly influenced by their caregivers, particularly their mothers. This study aims to investigate the relationship between maternal knowledge and the oral health status of children aged 4 to 12 years. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 86 mother-child pairs from local health centers and the College of Dentistry at the University of Sulaimani in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq. Structured questionnaires were used to measure maternal oral health knowledge and attitudes, and a

Illuminating the invisible: translational biophotonics for contemporary caries detection and biological decision-making.

Dental caries remains the most prevalent chronic condition globally, yet conventional diagnostic methods often fail to detect early lesions. Biophotonics, the study of light-tissue interactions, provides a new diagnostic pathway by exploiting the inherent optical properties of enamel and dentin. Over the past decades, research has connected laboratory spectroscopy, molecular chemistry and clinical imaging to define how light-based diagnostics can reveal the earliest biochemical signatures of demineralization. Conventional diagnostic methods, including visual examination and radiography, remain

Cannabinoid-Functionalized Glass Ionomer Cements: Structural Stability, Fluoride Release, and Antibiofilm Activity against Cariogenic Bacteria.

Dental caries is strongly associated with biofilm-forming bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus, and improving the antimicrobial performance of restorative materials remains a major challenge in preventive dentistry. Glass ionomer cements (GICs) exhibit favorable properties including chemical adhesion and fluoride release, yet their intrinsic antibacterial activity remains limited. This study investigated the incorporation of four cannabinoid-rich fractions (F1, F2, F3, and F4) into glass ionomer cements and evaluated their structural, antimicrobial, and biologica…

Polymorphisms in SOD2 and SOD3 Genes are Associated with Dental Caries in Primary Dentition of Brazilian Children.

To investigate the association of polymorphisms in the SOD2 (rs5746136, rs10370, and rs4880) and SOD3 (rs2855262, and rs13306703) genes and dental caries in primary dentition. This cross-sectional study included 753 children aged from 2 to 6 years in primary dentition from 33 public preschools in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Covariates such as gender and body mass index were collected. Dental caries experience was evaluated using WHO (2013) criteria. Phenotypes were classified as absence (dmft = 0), presence (dmft ≥ 1) or high caries experience (dmft ≥ 5). Genotyping of the selected

Differences in pericoronitis knowledge among Chinese undergraduates: a cross-disciplinary survey in Northeastern Universities.

BACKGROUND: Pericoronitis, an inflammation of the gum around a partially erupted third molar (wisdom tooth), frequently affects young adults. Despite its prevalence, the level of awareness and understanding of pericoronitis among undergraduates in various academic fields remains poorly characterized, especially among students outside health-related majors. Improving this knowledge is important to encourage timely care and prevent complications. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in April 2025 among 664 first- and second-year undergraduates from three universities in Northeastern
