Roles of pharmacists in expanding access to safe and effective medical abortion in developing countries: a review of the literature.

Unsafe abortion continues to be a major contributor to maternal mortality and morbidity around the world. This article examines the role of pharmacists in expanding women's access to safe medical abortion in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Available research shows that although pharmacists and pharmacy workers often sell abortion medications to women, accurate information about how to use the medications safely and effectively is rarely offered. No publication covered effective interventions by pharmacists to expand access to medical abortion, but lessons can be learned from successful interv

'Often there is a good deal to be done, but socially rather than medically': the psychiatric social worker as social therapist, 1945-70.

Seeking to align psychiatric practice with general medicine following the inauguration of the National Health Service, psychiatric hospitals in post-war Britain deployed new treatments designed to induce somatic change, such as ECT, leucotomy and sedatives. Advocates of these treatments, often grouped together under the term 'physical therapies', expressed relief that the social problems encountered by patients could now be interpreted as symptomatic of underlying biological malfunction rather than as a cause of disorder that required treatment. Drawing on the British Journal of Psychiatric So

Fatigue: implications for the elderly.

Sporadic and chronic fatigue are common, but an underlying etiology is identified in only up to 10% of cases. Under-reporting makes fatigue's prevalence unknown. Some estimate up to 50% of elders suffer from mild fatigue. Causes vary, but prevailing theory links most fatigue as a secondary consequence to illness and medication. Fatigue is prominently linked to sleep disorders, depression, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, anemia, and cancer. Fatigue and its consequences should be assessed routinely. Empiric treatment is the norm, focusing on managing fatigue, and, when possible, selecting ag

Discontinuation and reinstitution of medications during the perioperative period.

PURPOSE: The issues regarding the discontinuation and reinstitution of long-term therapies, including cardiovascular agents, anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents, central nervous system agents, and herbal medicines, in the perioperative period are discussed. SUMMARY: It is estimated that one fourth of all patients undergoing a surgical procedure are taking long-term medications. The issues surrounding the decision to discontinue such medications before surgery and when to reinstitute them are complex. In the preoperative period, it is important to avoid the use of medications that may negat

[Between a psychiatric diagnosis and a familial diagnosis].

If the idea of a biopsychosocial model is not going to be merely a phrase, then every clinical diagnosis and therapeutic vision need to consider the familial issues. Taking the family issues into consideration has evident gains; it allows for a better understanding of the patient and allows for actions which reduce the risk of a relapse of illness. The fact that such issues are not part of the therapeutic armament, despite the effectiveness of psychoeducation, is bewildering: on one hand the families are not always invited to co-operate, on the other hand--they often give up this co-operation.

The effects of integrating work-related factors and improving cooperation in musculoskeletal physical therapy practice: protocol for the 'WORK TO BE DONE' cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the primary cause of disability worldwide and a major societal burden. Recent qualitative research found that although a patient's work is considered important, physical therapists take work participation insufficiently into account as a determining factor in the treatment of patients with MSDs. Therefore, the aim of this study is to improve the effectiveness of physical therapy (in primary healthcare) with respect to the work participation of employees with MSDs by increasing the knowledge and skills of generalist physical therapists and by imp

Good grief: staff responses to childbearing loss.

The emotional implications for staff of loss in childbearing have been inadequately addressed. In this paper I focus on maternity situations, but it is necessary to draw on other areas' findings. I address crying by the care provider and its association with staff grief. The conclusion emerges that education is likely to help staff to provide quality care in these most sensitive of sensitive situations.

Knowledge of pharmacists regarding ritalin and ADHD and their attitude towards the use of ritalin to treat ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: To survey the knowledge and attitude of pharmacists towards Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the drug ritalin. METHOD: A self-reported questionnaire on knowledge and attitude towards ADHD and ritalin was completed by pharmacists. RESULTS: About 40% of respondents agreed that ADHD is due to biological and genetic vulnerabilities and causation. A total of 63% reported that the cause is a chaotic and dysfunctional family and 91% of the respondents believed that ADHD children misbehave primarily because they refuse to follow rules and complete assignments. About 85.

How Does an Integrated Pharmacist Add Value in the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the Era of Values-Based Healthcare?

The World Health Organization has recommended that the management of chronic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) should be undertaken using an integrated approach delivered by a multidisciplinary team. Although the composition of an IBD multidisciplinary team has been well described, the inclusion of an IBD pharmacist as a core member has been more recent, with variable uptake within IBD services internationally. While pharmacists continue to play the traditional role of safe prescribing and monitoring of immunosuppressive therapies, their role within the IBD team is rapidly expa

Implementation of the national community health policy in Guinea: a decision space analysis of the roles and responsibilities of community health workers.

INTRODUCTION: Community health workers (CHW) are crucial for universal health coverage (UHC) in low- and middle-income countries. Decentralization supports this goal but can cause issues if local actors misunderstand their roles. This study explores how Guinea's local health system actors understood and executed their responsibilities in delivering community health services from 2017 to 2021. METHODS: This is a subanalysis of 168 CHW from a larger study of 522 respondents on the implementation of community health policy in Guinea. We used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design to asses

The University Chaplain: An Often Unrecognised Resource in Suicide Prevention-Initial Qualitative Results from Exploratory Research into the Roles of University Chaplains at One Australian University.

University chaplains are often unrecognised as resources in suicide prevention. This exploratory article highlights the valuable contributions university chaplains at one Australian university make to suicide prevention. Three overarching themes related to the contributions of university chaplains to suicide prevention were generated: (1) person-centred care; (2) the role of university chaplains in suicide prevention; and (3) professional development. Of particular note is that university chaplains actively contribute to all three phases of the suicide prevention framework: prevention, interve

Pharmacist Interventions for Inhaled Medication Use in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Pharmacists are ideally situated and trained to educate and advocate for the proper use of inhaled medications among patients in the community. Proper inhaler technique is an important way to prevent exacerbations and manage the symptoms associated with chronic pulmonary diseases. The American Lung Association estimates almost 6 million people 65 years of age or older had a diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in 2020 in the United States. However, published reports have found that less than 20% of older people with COPD use inhalers correctly. As inhalers are the primary
