METHODS: Nineteen patients meeting The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV criteria for major depressive disorder, dysthymia, or chronic/recurrent depression and their family members participated in an open-label study testing the efficacy of the MoD Program. The intervention consisted of nine

Cross-Cultural Comparison of Perceived Stigma in Major Depressive Disorder: The Role of Spiritual Well-Being, Resilience, and Quality of Life in Austria and Japan.

BACKGROUND: Perceived stigma in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a well-established barrier to help-seeking, social functioning, and quality of life. However, little is known about how stigma is shaped by cultural context and which psychosocial resources may buffer its effects. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived stigma and key protective factors - spirituality, resilience, quality of life, and social functioning - in patients with MDD from Austria and Japan. METHOD: A total of 101 patients diagnosed with MDD (51 from Austria, 50 from Japan) completed valid

Efficacy of ketamine and esketamine on functional outcomes in treatment-resistant depression: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, ketamine and esketamine treatment have demonstrated rapid antidepressant effects in adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Hitherto, relatively few studies have reported the effect of ketamine/esketamine treatment on functional outcomes (e.g., psychosocial functioning, workplace functioning). Herein, we review and synthesize extant literature reporting functional outcomes with ketamine/esketamine treatment in adults with TRD. METHODS: A systematic review of clinical studies reporting subjective or objective ratings of general functioning as primary or s…

Psychosocial aspects of adolescent cancer survival.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to examine the psychosocial status of adolescent cancer survivors and compare them with healthy peers. It has been suggested in previous research that the majority of survivors display equivalent levels of psychosocial functioning post-treatment as compared with healthy controls. However, despite successful treatment, survivors may have to adjust to living with a chronic illness and its associated late effects interspersed across the lifespan (e.g. infertility, cognitive deficits, heart complications). Whilst young people appear to have similar level…

Longitudinal Impact of Time and Negative Health Events on Physical Independence and Social Participation After Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Many individuals aging with spinal cord injury (SCI) experience health complications that threaten independence and participation. However, little is known about how negative health events (NHEs) and time since injury shape long-term functional and psychosocial outcomes for individuals with SCI. METHODS: Participants were from a national longitudinal dataset of over 13,000 participants from the SCI Model Systems. Participants had 2 or more follow-up assessments of functional and psychosocial outcomes (CHART-SF and SWLS) and NHEs (composite of pain interference, rehospitalization,

Effects of cognitive behavioral techniques for gambling on recovery defined by gambling, psychological functioning, and quality of life: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals who experience gambling harms report that sustained recovery involves changing both gambling behaviors and psychological symptoms, as well as building a meaningful life. However, there is limited understanding about the effect of cognitive behavioral (CB) techniques on psychological symptoms and quality of life. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of CB techniques for gambling-related harms on broader recovery outcomes such as psychological symptoms and quality of life. METHOD: A systematic article search was conducted to identify randomized contr

Relationship Between Psychosocial Work Environment Factors and Presenteeism Among Workers With Diarrhea/Constipation Symptoms: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the relationship of diarrhea/constipation symptoms with presenteeism and psychosocial work environment factors. METHODS: This study analyzed 16,975 workers of 10 Japanese companies. Presenteeism was measured using a work functioning impairment scale. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (cis) for the relationship between diarrhea/constipation and presenteeism were estimated using a logistic model, adjusting for the psychosocial work environment. RESULTS: Diarrhea/constipation symptoms were related to presenteeism. This relationship was we

Development of a mindfulness-based intervention for narcolepsy: a feasibility study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBI) have been shown to improve psychosocial functioning in medical populations but have not been studied in narcolepsy. This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of an MBI that was adapted for narcolepsy, including three variations in program length. METHODS: Adults with narcolepsy (N = 60) were randomized to MBI groups of varying durations: brief (4 weeks), standard (8 weeks), or extended (12 weeks). Participants completed assessments at baseline, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. To assess feasibility and acceptability, primary outcomes incl…

Relations between pain characteristics, child and parent variables, and school functioning in adolescents with chronic headache: a comparison of tension-type headache and migraine.

OBJECTIVE: To assess for differences in headache characteristics and psychosocial factors based on headache diagnosis, and to evaluate whether headache diagnosis moderates relations between psychosocial factors and school difficulties. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was conducted with 262 adolescents with chronic tension-type headache (TTH; N = 153) and migraine evaluated at a pediatric headache clinic. Adolescents completed measures of anxiety, depression, and pain coping. Parents completed a measure of parental protective behavior and school functioning. RESULTS: Adolescents with TTH

Quality of life and disease-specific functioning of patients with anorectal malformations or Hirschsprung's disease: a review.

The objective of this review was to examine disease-specific functioning (ie, faecal functioning and disease-related psychosocial problems) and quality of life (QoL)in patients with anorectal malformations (ARMs) or Hirschsprung's disease across different developmental stages. A search on PubMed yielded 22 eligible studies which were analysed. Patients with ARM or Hirschsprung's disease report slightly more QoL problems than comparison groups. As compared with adolescents, children reported better QoL but worse disease-specific functioning. Relationships between disease-specific functioning an
