Overview, Control Strategies, and Lessons Learned in the CDC Response to the 2014-2016 Ebola Epidemic.

During 2014-2016, CDC, working with U.S. and international partners, mounted a concerted response to end the unprecedented epidemic of Ebola virus disease (Ebola) in West Africa. CDC's response, which was the largest in the agency's history, was directed simultaneously at controlling the epidemic in West Africa and strengthening preparedness for Ebola in the United States. Although experience in responding to approximately 20 Ebola outbreaks since 1976 had provided CDC and other international responders an understanding of the disease and how to stop its spread, the epidemic in West Africa pre

Water-Related Impacts of Climate Change on Agriculture and Subsequently on Public Health: A Review for Generalists with Particular Reference to Pakistan.

Water-related impacts due to change in climatic conditions ranging from water scarcity to intense floods and storms are increasing in developing countries like Pakistan. Water quality and waterborne diseases like hepatitis, cholera, typhoid, malaria and dengue fever are increasing due to chaotic urbanization, industrialization, poor hygienic conditions, and inappropriate water management. The morbidity rate is high due to lack of health care facilities, especially in developing countries. Organizations linked to the Government of Pakistan (e.g., Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Climate Cha

Patient and public involvement in the management and prevention of cardiovascular disease: a statement of the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions of the ESC and the ESC Patient Forum.

Patient and public involvement (PPI) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the management and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), at multiple levels. The partnership with patients and the public, those who are directly affected by CVD, is central to delivering personalized care, and may contribute to decreasing the burden of CVD and reducing health inequalities. This statement describes the concept of PPI and highlights the role of PPI across different settings including: clinical practice, research, regulatory processes, and policy and clinical guideline development. Recognition of the va

Deep vein thrombosis as a public health priority: wHO's agenda for Africa 2030.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious vascular condition characterized by the formation of blood clots in deep veins, predominantly in the lower limbs. Despite its significant morbidity and mortality worldwide, DVT remains an under-recognized public health issue in Africa, where limited awareness, diagnostic challenges, and resource constraints contribute to suboptimal prevention and management. The rising burden of risk factors such as obesity, HIV infection, infectious diseases, and sedentary lifestyles highlights the urgent need to prioritize DVT within the continent's healthcare agenda.

Impact of New Transport Infrastructure on Walking, Cycling, and Physical Activity.

INTRODUCTION: Walking and cycling bring health and environmental benefits, but there is little robust evidence that changing the built environment promotes these activities in populations. This study evaluated the effects of new transport infrastructure on active commuting and physical activity. STUDY DESIGN: Quasi-experimental analysis nested within a cohort study. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Four hundred and sixty-nine adult commuters, recruited through a predominantly workplace-based strategy, who lived within 30 kilometers of Cambridge, United Kingdom and worked in areas of the city to be serv

Alzheimer's disease and dementia care in Nigeria: Challenges, realities, and the call for a national strategy.

Alzheimer's disease, which is the most common cause of dementia, represents a growing but under-recognized public health challenge in Nigeria. Despite global advances in dementia awareness, care and management, Nigeria continues to face significant barriers, including stigma, inadequate health infrastructure, and the absence of a national dementia strategy. This article highlights the epidemiology, biological basis, risk factors, and current challenges of Alzheimer's disease in Nigeria, while proposing evidence-based recommendations for policy, research, and community engagement aligned with g

The medical community must not remain silent about healthcare and water access denial in Palestine.

Physicians have a duty to oppose the human suffering and human rights abuses occurring in Gaza, particularly the violations of international humanitarian law (IHL). We especially call attention to the scarcity of potable water in Gaza, which has fueled outbreaks of hepatitis A, polio, and skin infections and has created a public health crisis that is further exacerbated by the destruction of healthcare infrastructure and targeting of healthcare workers. The time is long overdue for physicians to affirm that IHL, including guaranteed access to healthcare and potable water, must be upheld to pro

Poliomyelitis surveillance: the compass for eradication.

Effective disease surveillance is a key strategy of the global polio eradication initiative. In an effort to strengthen the quality of polio surveillance as a prerequisite to achieving and certifying eradication, surveillance assessments were conducted in 28 countries in the World Health Organization African, Eastern Mediterranean, and European Regions from 1992 to 1995 using a standard protocol and evaluation guidelines. Six general recommendations were made: Use surveillance data for public health decision-making and action, improve timeliness of information exchange and dissemination, stand

Strengthening Youth Crisis Reporting and Response: Development of a Practice-Based Systems Maturity Model.

Youth suicide prevention and crisis response require coordinated action across public health, behavioral health, education, health care, law enforcement, and community systems. However, local jurisdictions often lack practical tools to assess system readiness and prioritize system improvements across fragmented service systems. This article introduces the Youth Crisis Reporting and Response Maturity Model, a practice-based framework developed through a multicounty pilot initiative in California. The model was informed by participatory system mapping, county reporting data, and iterative input

Influence of socioeconomic events on cause-specific mortality in urban Shanghai, China, from 1974 to 2015: a population-based longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how socioeconomic events influence cause-specific mortality is essential for optimizing disease-control strategies. We characterized long-term trends in cause-specific mortality in a stable population from a very large urban centre. METHODS: We derived population data from 1974 to 2015 on vital status, demographics and causes of death from the death registration system in Yangpu District, Shanghai, China. We examined temporal trends in mortality and assessed the effects of age, period and birth cohort. RESULTS: Over 41 879 864 person-years of follow-up, we analyzed

Public health emergency management capacity building in Guinea: 2014-2019.

Before the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak of 2014-2016, Guinea did not have an emergency management system in place. During the outbreak, Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) 2014-2019 funds made it possible to rapidly improve the country's capacity to manage epidemics through the development of public health emergency operation centres (PHEOCs) at the national and district levels. Since the end of the response, the infrastructure, staff, and systems of these PHEOCs have been further reinforced and well-integrated in the daily activities of Guinea's National Agency for Health Security, the

Promoting Hispanic Immigrant Health via Community Health Workers and Motivational Interviewing.

Hispanic immigrant health disparities are among the highest in the nation, especially related to obesity and access to health services. Healthy Fit (En Forma Saludable) is a health promotion program that leverages public health department infrastructure to address these disparities through the use of three key innovations explored in this article: community health workers (CHWs), motivational interviewing (MI), and vouchers for free preventative health services. CHWs trained in MI conduct a health screening and then distribute preventive service vouchers and health resources as needed based on

Epidemiology and Health for All. The role of epidemiology in a health policy.

World Health Organization's goal Health for All is the starting point for a most ambitious health policy ever. The paper analyzes the role of epidemiology in the Organization's work, particularly in the Health for All development. During WHO's early years, epidemiology helped to design and carry out major public health campaigns against such scourges of the humanity as yaws, tuberculosis, malaria and small pox. When the Organization during the 1960s began to emphasize the need to develop the infrastructure of health care, health services research partly replaced epidemiology as WHO's main scie

Cannabis Social Equity Programs and Their Unintended Consequences.

Cannabis social equity programs have been implemented in many U.S. jurisdictions to address disparities associated with cannabis prohibition and expand participation in the legal cannabis market. While these initiatives reflect important policy goals, their implementation intersects with emerging public health concerns. Legal cannabis markets have expanded availability and access to high-potency cannabis products, and studies in several jurisdictions have reported increases in frequent cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) following legalization. Social equity frameworks often designate

The role of artificial intelligence for dengue prevention, control, and management: A technical narrative review.

Dengue fever remains a significant global health threat, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, where rapid urbanization and climate variability exacerbate its spread. Traditional surveillance and control systems often struggle with delayed reporting, limited predictive capacity, and resource constraints. Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents a transformative opportunity to enhance dengue prevention, control, and management through data-driven decision-making. This review synthesizes current applications of AI across key domains: outbreak forecasting, vector control, clinical manage
