Provision and use of focused rigidity casts in the public health setting: a modified Delphi study.

OBJECTIVE: Focused rigidity casts (FRCs) are used by podiatrists in the promotion of wound healing and to offload bony prominences and foot ulcers. The aim of this study was to gain expert consensus on the best method of FRC application to inform the development of a clinical guideline. METHOD: A modified Delphi study was conducted comprising three rounds. The first round consisted of open-ended questions around clinical guideline content, from which three researchers independently identified themes from expert responses. Survey rounds two and three sought to gain agreement on statements iden

Exploring the public's perception and understanding of Parkinson's disease in Ireland: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: There appears to be a lack of empirical investigation on how the public currently understands Parkinson's Disease (PD)and the impact this has on people with PD and their carers, across Ireland. This research hopes to build a greater public understanding of PD, reduce stigma and improve the quality of life for people with PD. The aim of this study is to (1) explore public perceptions, awareness and understanding about PD across the island of Ireland and (2) discover how this impacts people with PD and their families. METHODS: This study will adopt a mixed-methods, sequential explan

Awareness and knowledge of glaucoma among visitors of main public hospitals in Damascus, Syria: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The main way to prevent blindness from Glaucoma is by early detection and diagnosis; and to do so the awareness must be raised among people where Glaucoma is defined as an acquired chronic optic neuropathy characterized by optic disk cupping and visual field loss. Lack of knowledge about this disease is one of the most important reasons that made it develop to advanced stages. Based on that, we conducted scientific research to assess peoples' awareness and knowledge about Glaucoma. After reviewing the literature, it was found that this study is the first in Syria. METHODS: We cond

Deploying triple artemisinin-based combination therapy (TACT) for malaria treatment in Africa: ethical and practical considerations.

Malaria remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Africa, particularly in children under five years of age. Availability of effective anti-malarial drug treatment is a cornerstone for malaria control and eventual malaria elimination. Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) is worldwide the first-line treatment for uncomplicated falciparum malaria, but the ACT drugs are starting to fail in Southeast Asia because of drug resistance. Resistance to artemisinins and their partner drugs could spread from Southeast Asia to Africa or emerge locally, jeopardizing the progress made in mala

Strengthening partnerships between substance use researchers and policy makers to take advantage of a window of opportunity.

BACKGROUND: The National Institute on Drug Abuse has identified a persistent research-to-practice gap in the implementation of evidence-based prevention and treatment programs for substance use disorder. To identify mechanisms to close this gap, we sought to obtain and characterize the range of policy makers' perspectives on the use of research in substance use disorder treatment and coverage decisions. METHODS: We conducted open-ended, semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of eighteen policy makers involved in the delivery of health services. The aim was to identify barriers and

Establishing a multidisciplinary partnership integrating podiatric care into the Quebec public health-care system to improve diabetic foot outcomes: A retrospective cohort.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are one of the main complications of diabetes affecting many Canadians that need to be effectively managed. There is limited data concerning outcomes of Canadian patients with DFUs treated with a team approach in the public health system. Podiatrists are known to be key members of a multidisciplinary team approach to DFUs management, but in Quebec, Canada, they are only available in private practice. The aim of this study is to evaluate diabetic foot outcomes after integrating podiatric care into in-hospital wound care clinic settings. A 12-month retrospective cohor

Ricin poisoning: a comprehensive review.

CONTEXT: The recent discoveries of ricin, a deadly biologic toxin, at a South Carolina postal facility, a White House mail facility, and a US senator's office has raised concerns among public health officials, physicians, and citizens. Ricin is one of the most potent and lethal substances known, particularly when inhaled. The ease with which the native plant (Ricinus communis) can be obtained and the toxin extracted makes ricin an attractive weapon. OBJECTIVES: To summarize the literature on ricin poisoning and provide recommendations based on our best professional judgment for clinicians and

Suspension of rotavirus vaccine after reports of intussusception--United States, 1999.

On July 16, 1999, CDC recommended that health-care providers suspend use of the licensed rhesus-human rotavirus reassortant-tetravalent vaccine (RRV-TV) (RotaShield, Wyeth Laboratories, Inc., Marietta, Pennsylvania) in response to 15 cases of intussusception (i.e., a bowel obstruction in which one segment of bowel becomes enfolded within another segment) among infants who received RRV-TV. The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) monitored for adverse events following licensure of RRV-TV on August 31, 1999. After the recommendation to suspend use of the vaccine, no additional cases we

The achievements and challenges of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC).

The main strategy of APOC, of community-directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI), has enabled the programme to reach, empower and bring relief to remote and under-served, onchocerciasis-endemic communities. With CDTI, geographical and therapeutic coverages have increased substantially, in most areas, to the levels required to eliminate onchocerciasis as a public-health problem. Over 20 million people received treatment in 2000. APOC has also made effective use of the combination of the rapid epidemiological mapping of onchocerciasis (REMO) and geographical information systems (GIS), to provid

The Legal Landscape for People Living with Chronic Hepatitis B in Australia: : A Consensus-Based View of Priority Justiciable Issues from Sector Leaders.

The law and legal processes have a demonstrable impact on the public-health management and lived experience of people living with blood-borne viruses. However, very little is known about how the legal environment informs the experience of chronic hepatitis B or the justiciable issues experienced by people living with and affected by the virus. This article reports on a deliberative consensus process conducted with leaders of hepatitis B-related community organizations in Australia that aimed to identify, characterize, and prioritize the legal issues faced by people in the communities they supp
