Racial Disparities in Drug Arrest Before and After De Facto Decriminalization in Baltimore.

INTRODUCTION: To mitigate the harms of arrest and incarceration on health and racial equity, jurisdictions are increasingly enacting reforms to decriminalize drug possession through prosecutorial discretion (de facto). Impacts on health outcomes rely on whether this policy can reduce exposure to the carceral system among people who use drugs; however, data evaluating effects on arrest are lacking. This study explores the possible impacts of Baltimore City's enactment of de facto decriminalization on arrests by race. METHODS: Police and court records were used to explore the possible impacts o

The Role of Discrimination Experiences in Postrape Adjustment Among Racial and Ethnic Minority Women.

Although recent studies have linked discrimination frequency among Black and Latinx individuals to PTSD symptom severity, to our knowledge, these associations have yet to be examined among a diverse sample of recent rape survivors. The current secondary analysis of existing data examined the role of discrimination experiences in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression, and alcohol and drug problems among a racially and ethnically diverse sample of recent rape survivors. Participants were 139 Black (48.2%; n = 67), American Indian (18.7%; n = 26), Hispanic (15.1%; n = 21), an

Health outcomes in redlined versus non-redlined neighborhoods: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Redlining was a racialized zoning practice in the U.S. that blocked fair access to home loans during the 1930s, and recent research is illuminating health problems in the current residents of these historically redlined areas. However, this work has not yet been holistically summarized. Here, we present the first systematic review and meta-analysis comparing health outcomes in redlined versus non-redlined neighborhoods in U.S. cities. METHODS: We extracted relevant articles in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane and Science Direct databases published from January 2010 to September 20

The Japanese American wartime incarceration: Examining the scope of racial trauma.

Ten weeks after the 1941 Japanese military attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the U.S. government authorized the removal of more than 110,000 J … o support the removal decision and concluded that the incarceration was a grave injustice fueled by racism and war hysteria. The Japanese American wartime experience represents a powerful case example of race-based historical trauma. This article describes the consequences of the incarceration for Japanese Americans during and after their unjust imprison …

Severe tooth loss influences the perception of racial and gender discrimination among Brazilian older adults.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse whether severe tooth loss influences perceived racial and gender discrimination in Brazilian older adults. METHODS: The data were obtained from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Ageing, a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling individuals aged 50 and older. The outcome measured was the perception of discrimination in five different settings. The main explanatory variables were self-identified/self-perceived race (Whites and Non-whites) and gender, while covariates included education level, equivalized per capita income, depression, and the use of dental

Visual Satire and Covid-19 in the Comics of Billingsley, Bell, and Obuobi.

This essay tracks how elements of satire and seriality are used across select examples of comics by Black-identified author-artists-Ray Billingsley's Curtis, Darrin Bell's Candorville, and diary comics and social media posts by Shirlene Obuobi, MD-to process the potential traumas related to the Covid-19 pandemic, medical racism, and antiblackness at the hospital. Forwarding the scholarship of Tina Campt, Rebecca Wanzo, Danielle Fuentes Morgan, Linda Villarosa, Christina Sharpe, and others, I argue that despite their kaleidoscopic differences, the comic authors discussed variously picture racia…

African American OST Providers, Parents, and Youth Experiences in Summer Programs: Engaging High School Youth.

PURPOSE: Out-of-school time (OST) programs supplement formal education. However, documentation of the perspectives of minoritized youth experiencing intersectional oppressions from multiple stakeholders is missing from the literature. Therefore, the current study was guided by Critical Race Theory (CRT), and the purpose was to explore high school-aged African American youth, parents, and OST employees' perspectives on the influence of race and income on high school-aged low-income African American youth participation in summer programs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mixed methods approach was take

Using Virtual Reality in Discrimination Research: Ethical Considerations and Participants' Perspectives.

Virtual reality (VR) can offer unique advantages for studying how individuals respond to stressful events, including racial discrimination, but the ethics of using VR in this context remain underexplored. We briefly review possible scientific benefits and risks of using VR to examine racial discrimination. We also report results from 130 participants of color (Mage = 24.21, 49.2% women) who completed a VR experiment where they were assigned to either a racial discrimination or daily hassle condition. Participants exposed to the racial discrimination simulation recalled greater stress than thei

Association of Biomarker-Based Artificial Intelligence With Risk of Racial Bias in Retinal Images.

IMPORTANCE: Although race is a social construct, it is associated with variations in skin and retinal pigmentation. Image-based medical artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms that use images of these organs have the potential to learn features associated with self-reported race (SRR), which increases the risk of racially biased performance in diagnostic tasks; understanding whether this information can be removed, without affecting the performance of AI algorithms, is critical in reducing the risk of racial bias in medical AI. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether converting color fundus photograph

The Associations of Racial Discrimination and Neighborhood Disadvantage With World Assumptions Among Black, Latine, and Asian Young Adults.

The theory of shattered assumptions proposes that experiencing traumatic events can change how people view themselves and the world. Most adults experience a traumatic event during their lifetime, and some subsequently develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the current conceptualization of trauma (i.e., Criterion A PTSD) may be too narrow to adequately capture the range of potentially traumatizing events that People of Color experience, including racial discrimination and neighborhood disadvantage. This study investigated the association of racial discrimination and neighborho

Discrimination and adjustment in adolescence: the moderating role of sleep.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We examined multiple actigraphy-based sleep parameters as moderators of associations between experiences of general and racial discrimination and adolescent internalizing symptoms (anxiety, depression) and externalizing behavior (rule-breaking). Adolescent sex and race were examined as additional moderators. METHODS: Participants were 272 adolescents (Mage = 17.3 years, SD = 0.76; 51% male; 59% White/European American, 41% Black/African American). Sleep was assessed using actigraphs for 7 consecutive nights from which sleep duration (minutes), efficiency, and variability in

Xenophobia and discrimination: Consequences for latinx immigrants and pathways to restoration & healing.

The United States is often conceptualized as a country of immigrants, with an origin story of multicultural, multilingual, diverse foreign-b … h (e.g., ethno-racial trauma, depression). While it is critical to highlight the harmful effects of racism and xenophobia on immigrant well-being, the intent of this article is to also explore how indigenous, restorative healing practices may help communities and individuals heal from xenophobia and discrimination. Thus, the aim of this piece is twofold; …

Belonging and the Power of Group in Stressful Times (The American Group Psychotherapy Association 2026 Conference Anne and Ramon Alonso Plenary Presidential Address).

The current paper is the Alonso Plenary Presidential Address given at the Annual American Group Psychotherapy Association's 2026 Conference. The plenary focuses on how we are uniquely suited to address the psychological stressors, trauma, and mass trauma group members carry into their therapy and support groups. We have at our disposal the multifaceted tools of healing, including (1) small groups, which provide a safe container to process, metabolize and create symbolic meaning; (2) large groups, where projections, stereotypes, racism, and unresolved social traumas can be expressed, examined, …

Factors associated with resilience among Black women living with HIV and histories of trauma.

In the United States, Black women living with HIV face various individual (e.g. trauma) and structural (e.g. racism) adversities. However, resilience is understudied among Black women living with HIV. A total of 100 Black women living with HIV in the United States completed measures of resilience, general self-efficacy, self-esteem, post-traumatic growth, trauma symptoms, trauma-related cognitions, and depressive symptoms. Regressions controlling for age and education indicated that higher resilience was associated with higher general self-efficacy (β = .39, p < .001), higher self-esteem (β = …

The effects of racial stressors and hostility on cardiovascular reactivity in African American and Caucasian men.

This study examined the effects of race-related stressors and hostility on cardiovascular reactivity in 31 African American and 31 Caucasian … sure to the films. Although the results failed to confirm previous reports of greater reactivity to racism in African Americans, the findings suggest that diastolic blood pressure levels may remain elevated after exposure to racist stimuli. These results indicate that even indirect exposure to interpersonal conflict elicits significant reactivity, which …
