Long-term burden of care and radiation exposure in survivors of esophageal atresia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) historically have had a high risk of neonatal mortality but the majority of patients are now expected to live into adulthood. However, the long-term burden of care among recent EA/TEF survivors has not been documented. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective review of newborns with EA/TEF treated from 2001-2005 was conducted, including initial and total hospitalization length of stay, and number of clinic visits and procedures requiring general anesthesia in the first three years of life. Expos

[Analysis of radiation exposure to medical staff and patients during ERCP in Uruguay].

BACKGROUND: The ERCP procedure requires the use of fluoroscopy with the subsequent exposure to ionizing radiation. The doses received by patients, physicians and assistants in the endoscopy have never been recorded in our area. This analysis describes the findings of the MIRED_Uy study (measuring radiation in digestive endoscopy in Uruguay). Objective. To determine radiation exposure received by patients, physicians and assistants during ERCP. METHODS: Data were collected from 33 procedures conducted by four endoscopists, supported by endoscopy assistants. All staff took basic radiation-prote…

The effects of pesticide exposure on ultraviolet-B radiation avoidance behavior in tadpoles.

Effects of contaminants on behavior may have important consequences on wildlife populations because behaviors such as predation, predator avoidance, reproduction, and social interaction can affect population dynamics. As a common environmental stressor, ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation causes various deleterious effects and some aquatic organisms actively avoid UVB radiation in water. However, the extent to which environmental contaminants can impair UVB avoidance has not been evaluated, which may cause greater UVB exposure and toxicity. In the present study, we used Xenopus laevis tadpoles to de

Mitochondrial DNA damage as a biomarker for ultraviolet radiation exposure and oxidative stress.

The skin is regularly exposed to the harmful effects of sunlight, such as ultraviolet radiation (UVR), which leads to ageing effects as well as clinical precancerous lesions and skin cancer. The accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage has been strongly associated as an underlying cause of the general ageing process in tissues and mtDNA damage has been associated with cancer development in many tissues including human skin. This scenario is linked to the key roles of mitochondrial function and mtDNA both in terms of energy production and also oxidative stress production as well as a me

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and risk of breast cancer in Western Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate current breast cancer risk due to occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Western Australian population-based Breast Cancer Employment and Environment Study. The Breast Cancer Employment and Environment Study included 1205 cases with incident breast cancer during 2009-2011 and 1789 controls. Age-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were estimated with logistic regression models. RESULTS: There was a weak, not statistically significant association between breast cancer and occupational exposure to ionizing radiation (OR = 1.16; 95% confiden

Detection of partial-body exposure to ionizing radiation by the automatic detection of dicentrics.

In accidental exposure to ionizing radiation, it is essential to estimate the dose received by the victims. Currently dicentric scoring is the best biological indicator of exposure. The standard biological dosimetry procedure (500 metaphases scored manually) is suitable for a few dose estimations, but the time needed for analysis can be problematic in the case of a large-scale accident. Recently, a new methodology using automatic detection of dicentrics has greatly decreased the time needed for dose estimation and preserves the accuracy of the estimation. However, the capability to detect nonh

Non-malignant thyroid diseases after a wide range of radiation exposures.

The thyroid gland is one of the most radiosensitive human organs. While it is well known that radiation exposure increases the risk of thyroid cancer, less is known about its effects in relation to non-malignant thyroid diseases. The aim of this review is to evaluate the effects of high- and low-dose radiation on benign structural and functional diseases of the thyroid. We examined the results of major studies from cancer patients treated with high-dose radiotherapy or thyrotoxicosis patients treated with high doses of iodine-131, patients treated with moderate- to high-dose radiotherapy for b…

Prior head and neck radiation exposure is not a contraindication to minimally invasive parathyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with primary hyperparathyroidism can have a minimally invasive parathyroidectomy based on localization studies showing single-gland disease. In patients with a history of head and neck irradiation, due to the increased risk of multigland disease and risk of concurrent thyroid cancer, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy is considered by some to be a contraindication. We postulated that previous history of head and neck irradiation should not be a contraindication for minimally invasive parathyroidectomy and tested this hypothesis in a prospective cohort of patients un

Exposure of the mouse perinatal testis to radiation leads to hypospermia at sexual maturity.

The first round of mouse spermatogenesis begins from 3 to 4 days after birth through differentiation of gonocytes into spermatogonial-stem cells and type A spermatogonia. Consequently, this step of differentiation may determine generation of the original population of stem cells and the fertility potential of the adult mouse. We aimed to determine the effect of perinatal exposure to ionizing radiation on the testis at the end of the first wave of spermatogenesis and at sexual maturity. Our results show that, radiation sensitivity of the testis substantially decreases from late foetal life to t

The effects of exposure of 60Co on the oxidant/antioxidant status among radiation victims.

This retrospective study has been performed with radiation victims who were accidentally exposed to a 60Co source and its release into the environment. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of elevated radiation exposures on plasma level, on erythrocyte thio barbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) level and on erythrocyte glutathione (GSH) levels. Patients were treated in different hospitals with different symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, along with severe anemia in some patients. Blood samples were collected 3-5 days following the radiation accident. Increases in plas…

Is there reliable experimental evidence for a chromosomal "fingerprint" of exposure to densely ionizing radiation?

A selection of published data on the ratio, F, of interchromosomal to intrachromosomal stable (reciprocal translocations and pericentric inversions) and unstable (dicentric chromosomes and centric rings) exchange aberrations in human lymphocytes has recently been presented as evidence for F values of about 15 for X and gamma rays and about 6 for neutrons and alpha particles (D. J. Brenner and R. K. Sachs, Radiat. Res. 140, 134-142, 1994). On this basis it was proposed that low F values could serve as a chromosomal "fingerprint" of densely ionizing radiation. In the present commentary it is sho

A review of the risks of leukemia in relation to parental pre-conception exposure to radiation.

The apparent risk of childhood leukemia resulting from paternal pre-conception radiation exposure found among children of the Sellafield (West Cumbria, UK) workforce is compared with the apparent risk in a number of other epidemiological studies. In particular, the extent of the incompatibility of the leukemia pre-conception exposure risks in the offspring of the Sellafield workforce born in the village of Seascale with the risks for those born in the rest of west Cumbria, and with the risks in the offspring of the Japanese bomb survivors, the Ontario radiation workers, and the Scottish radiat…

Are there 'common denominators' in different radiation exposure scenarios as a target for predictive assessment?

The first panel discussion of the International Searle-Foundation Workshop on Biological Indicators of Exposure to Ionizing Radiation was directed at identifying 'common denominators' for the development of somatic late effects. The presented accidents were analyzed in terms of occurrence of total body or partial body irradiation, external or internal contamination, onset of early signs or symptoms of acute radiation syndrome, reduction of life expectancy, and occurrence of neoplastic or non-neoplastic disorders. Evidence of radiation effects was sought in the victims' cell systems and in any

[Changes in the lipid component of thymocyte plasma membranes in exposure to ionizing radiation].

A thymocyte plasma membrane suspension was irradiated with a dose of 5 +/- 10(4) Gy. An increase in the rate of lipid peroxidation and a change in the phospholipid composition of membranes were revealed. The alteration of the plasma membrane structure was characterized by a change in the membrane charge and a decrease in the lipid viscosity.

Paternal exposure to radiation and offspring cancer in mice: reanalysis and new evidence.

Parental exposure to radiation could induce various kinds of tumors in the next generation. In ICR mice, a large and significant increase of adult types tumor was observed in the F1 offspring after X-ray exposure at spermatozoa and spermatid stages, and less clear increase was observed after spermatogonial exposure. Mature oocytes were resistant upto 1 Gy, but very sensitive to tumor induction at higher doses. While there was no difference in the tumor incidence between acute and fractionated (0.36 Gy at 2 hr intervals) irradiation at post-gonial stages, a large reduction of tumor incidence wa

[Changes in metabolism of the nervous system in exposure to ionizing radiation at supralethal doses].

Some biochemical disorders in the animals' central nervous system mainly in brain have been analysed after the exposure to superlethal doses of ionizing radiation as well in a state of the so-called early transient incapacity. The metabolism of gamma-aminobutyric acid, ammonia, histamine, cyclic nucleotides, prostaglandins and other biologically active substances is compared. Their investigation as metabolic regulators and modulators for nerve tissue seems to be of particular importance for deciphering the molecular mechanisms of changes in the central nervous system functional state and for d
