Expectations Shaped Elsewhere: Refugee Experiences of Healthcare in Aotearoa New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: We know that many refugees arrive in host countries, including Aotearoa New Zealand, with complex health needs and are at risk of poorer outcomes. Little attention has been paid to the expectations and understandings of care that they bring with them and how these shape their health experiences. Many refugees come from hospital-based healthcare systems with direct, timely access to specialists, tests and procedures but resettle into primary care systems where GPs act as gatekeepers to public and private specialists and nonemergency hospital services. DESIGN/METHODS: Refugee health…

Increasing vaccine uptake in a refugee resettlement community with high social vulnerability.

Impacted by the trauma of forced migration and resettlement, refugee, immigrant, and migrant (RIM) communities often have higher levels of social vulnerability and lower vaccination rates. The Georgia State University Prevention Research Center (PRC) collaborated with community organizations, residents, clinicians, and elected officials in the refugee resettlement community of Clarkston, GA to address community health needs before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This collaborative team cultivated community trust and developed strategies to address COVID-19 prevention and vaccine hesitation,

Tuberculosis at the crossroads: urgent actions for migrant and refugee health in a turbulent era.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains the world's deadliest infectious disease kiler, affecting the most vulnerable, including refugees and migrants. Their vulnerability is intensified by structural and social barriers that hinder diagnosis and treatment and restrict healthcare access. To put a spotlight on this issue, the WHO in collaboration with the Qatar Foundation launched a technical report on innovative solutions for TB elimination among refugees and migrants at the Seventh World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) in November 2024. The report proposes 10 policy options and includes seven illustrat…

Psychopathology mediates between maltreatment and memory functioning in Burundian refugee youth.

BACKGROUND: The detrimental impact of child maltreatment on children and adolescents' academic achievement and later socioeconomic wellbeing is well known. However, it is still unclear (1) whether maltreatment is actually linked to youth's long- and short-term memory deficits and (2) whether potential impairments are due to maltreatment per se or related psychopathology. OBJECTIVE: Based on the Attentional Control Theory, we investigated a mediational model in which maltreatment would be related to psychopathology (internalizing symptoms, posttraumatic stress symptoms, posttraumatic cognition

Persistence of antidepressant use among refugee youth with common mental disorder.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to investigate whether persistence of antidepressant use differs between refugee youth and Swedish-born youth after a diagnosis of a common mental disorder (CMD), and if clinical and sociodemographic factors are associated with antidepressant discontinuation. METHODS: Youth aged 16-25 years, with an incident diagnosis of CMD (depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders) accessing specialized healthcare in Sweden 2006-2016 were included. New users were identified with a one-year washout period. Refugees (N=1575) were compared…

Refugee camps - A lasting legacy? Evidence on long-term health impact.

This paper examines the long-term impact of refugee camps on the health of local residents in Tanzania. Taking height-for-age z-score (HAZ) as a proxy for health, the paper exploits the fact that different birth cohorts were exposed to different stages of the camps' lifecycle. Temporal variation through birth cohorts is combined with geographic variation in a difference-in-difference estimation approach. First, the paper examines the generation that were children at the opening of the camps and are now adults (as of 2012). It finds a negative and localised health effect that has persisted into

Hair cortisol, lifetime traumatic experiences and psychopathology in unaccompanied refugee minors.

Attenuated cortisol secretion has been linked to traumatic experiences and the developmental psychopathology. Unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) form a highly vulnerable group in this context, usually exposed to multiple and severe traumatic experiences and characterized by a high, comorbid symptom-load. Here, we provide a first investigation in URM seeking to elucidate associations between long-term cortisol output, assessed through hair cortisol concentrations (HCC), lifetime traumatic events and psychological symptoms. Ninety-one male URM from Syria and Afghanistan (mean age = 17.4 years),
