Independent and linked migrants: determinants of African American interstate migration.

"Through kinship and other links to destinations, many African American interstate migrants in the United States join other people in destination households. These ¿linked' migrants contrast to ¿independent migrants' who move as individuals or intact groups and set up their own households at the destination. Using U.S. Census Public Use Micro Sample data, this paper first shows that, in the 1985-90 period, about 45 percent of all Black interstate migrants were independent, compared to 38 percent who were linked to housing at the destination and 17 percent who moved into group quarters. Second,

Evaluating Care Complexity in Inflammatory Arthritis: A Population-Based Approach Using Classification and Regression Tree Analysis to Examine Health Care Utilization.

OBJECTIVE: We identified which care complexity characteristics contribute to high health care utilization (physician visits and emergency department [ED] visits) among individuals with inflammatory arthritis in Alberta. METHODS: We identified individuals diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), or axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) between 2010 and 2015 using a validated case definition. Sociodemographic and disease characteristics contributing to care complexity were described for each population. Classification and regression tree models were developed to identify which

The mediating role of childhood maltreatment in the association between residence migration and adolescent depression.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that residence migration can negatively affect the mental health of adolescents. However, the related factors that mediate the association between residence migration and depression are still uncertain. METHODS: The participants were 16,037 adolescents in junior middle schools. A self-administered questionnaire was used for the survey. In addition to collecting general demographic characteristics of the participants, including age, gender, local residence status, only child status, parental marriage status and parent-child relationship, the questionnaire als

Perceived neighborhood environment and multidimensional pain burden among U.S. adults.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain constitutes a multidimensional public health crisis. Environmental determinants may significantly influence pain experiences, yet the specific impact of perceived neighborhood walkability, infrastructure, and safety remains underexplored. METHODS: We analyzed data from 31,568 U.S. adults in the 2020 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), utilizing Multiple Imputation by Chained Equations (MICE) to address missingness. To minimize conceptual overlap and Type I error, pain frequency was designated as the primary outcome, with pain intensity and functional interference

[Walkability in older age: built environment factors and function-sensitive assessment in urban areas].

Walkability describes how supportive a neighbourhood is for walking and is a key concept for promoting mobility, physical activity and social participation in older age. However, existing approaches do not adequately reflect the specific needs of older adults, especially in the presence of functional limitations. This article outlines how walkability can be further conceptualised, measured in a function-sensitive way and empirically examined in an urban context. The paper presents an age-specific operationalization framework for walkability based on the authors' previous work and a Delphi conse

Associations between the built environment and body mass index among a residentially stable cohort of mid-older aged adults in Brisbane, Australia (2007-2016).

PURPOSE: Understanding the relationship between neighbourhood design and health is important for designing communities that facilitate ageing in place. This study examined trends in body mass index (BMI) across levels of neighbourhood built environment exposure, as well as associations between changes in the built environment and changes in BMI among ageing adults. METHODS: The sample included 11,035 participants aged 40-65 years at baseline from the HABITAT study, residing in Brisbane, Australia. Data were collected over five waves. Self-reported height and weight were used to calculate BMI.

Gene-Environment Interplay Between Residential Walkability and BMI: A Finnish Twin Study.

OBJECTIVE: BMI is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, including features of the obesogenic environment such as walkability. This study investigated the interplay between residential walkability, genetics, and BMI among 4312 individuals from two Finnish twin cohorts (mean age: 43). METHODS: Residential walkability was quantified using a composite index including built and natural environmental features. RESULTS: Multiple linear regression, adjusted for sociodemographic factors, showed that higher walkability was associated with lower BMI (coefficient: -0.02, 95% CI: -0.04, -

Sociodemographic and residential characteristics associated to persistent and non-persistent organic pollutants in household dust from Southern Spain. COVID-AND Study.

BACKGROUND: Scientific evidence suggests that indoor dust contains chemical pollutants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), bisphenols, parabens, and benzophenones, which are present in building materials and everyday products and could have implications for human health. OBJECTIVE: To quantify levels of PFAS, bisphenols, parabens, and benzophenones in household dust of four cohorts from Andalusia (Spain) and determine their relationship with sociodemographic and residential characteristics. METHODS: Household dust samples (n = 102) were collected (2023- 2025) within the COVI

Supporting minority youths' mental health during COVID-19: the role of neighborhood composition.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been shown to worsen mental health outcomes, particularly among minority youths. However, few studies have examined whether neighborhood composition-specifically greater co-ethnic density, which has been linked to better mental health in other contexts-might buffer against these negative effects. Furthermore, existing studies linking neighborhood ethnic composition to health tend to be based in the U.S., where racial/ethnic clustering is intrinsically intertwined with racial discrimination, making it hard to unpack the impact of neighborhood composition on

Evaluating the association between upstream perceived individual and neighborhood determinants of health and intensity of breast cancer screening.

Exposure to negative perceived individual and neighborhood determinants disproportionately impacts marginalized groups and can profoundly shape health behavior. We assessed the hypothesized relationship between exposure to adverse perceived individual and neighborhood determinants and rates of mammography. In this cohort study, we identified 31 568 female participants aged 40-74 without history of breast cancer in the All of Us Research Program. Participant-reported levels of perceived stress, everyday discrimination, perceived neighborhood physical disorder, perceived neighborhood social cohe

Subsidized senior housing and cognitive function: a moderated mediation model of social engagement and neighborhood cohesion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Subsidized senior housing (SSH) is widely valued for its affordability and housing stability, yet its potential social benefits, particularly for cognitive health, remain underexplored. Although congregate or shared housing environments are often theorized or presumed to foster social engagement and well-being, empirical evidence remains limited, especially from longitudinal, quasi-experimental studies in the context of subsidized senior housing. This study examines whether social engagement mediates the association between SSH residency and cognitive function, and w

Neighborhood Revitalization and Cardiovascular Disease Outcomes in Midlife and Older Adults Living in Low-Income Neighborhoods in the Bronx, New York: Protocol for a Natural Experiment and Multimethod Community-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood revitalization is a process through which land use rezoning and capital investment can spur new resources, such as access to healthful food and amenities for physical activity. While revitalization efforts may promote cardiovascular health, their benefits may not be distributed equally across sociodemographic groups. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study is to apply a socioecological framework that uses a multimethod approach incorporating quantitative data (longitudinal electronic health records and cross-sectional surveys) and qualitative data (longitudinal "walk-a-

Social connectedness dimensions are associated with lower psychological distress among middle-aged Black Americans.

PURPOSE: We examined how multiple dimensions of social connectedness are associated with psychological distress among Black American adults in Milwaukee, WI, USA. METHODS: The sample included 897 Black adults from (MIDUS 3, 2016-2017: n = 389; and MIDUS Refresher, 2012-2013: n = 508). Social connectedness measures included neighborhood cohesion, family/friend support and strain, contribution to community, social contribution (beliefs about one's value to society), and social integration (sense of belonging). Psychological distress was measured using the Kessler-6 Scale (range 0-24) as a conti

Neighborhood Indices, Income, and Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome at the Census Tract Level.

IMPORTANCE: Several integrative indices at the neighborhood level have been developed in the US, but direct comparisons across these indices for the prevalence of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) conditions are limited. Moreover, it is not known whether certain indices better capture place-based variability in CKM conditions or provide additional information when compared with a single measure of income. OBJECTIVE: To determine how much variability is explained by neighborhood indices in the prevalence of CKM conditions at the census tract level and the incremental value of each index wh

Differential Associations of Residential Greenspace and Built-Up Exposure With Children's Executive Function Components: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Research increasingly links neighborhood environments to children's cognition; however, whether residential greenspace and built-up exposure show different associations across executive function (EF) components in middle childhood remains unclear. Using a cross-sectional design, we examined these associations in 1446 Chinese children aged 8-11 years. Residential greenspace and built-up exposure were quantified within 300-m residential buffers using land-cover data. EF was assessed using tasks indexing working memory (span and updating), response inhibition, conflict inhibition, and cognitive f

Individual and Neighborhood Risk and Protective Factors of At-Risk and Problem Gambling: a Spatial Analysis Using Geographic Information Systems.

This study investigated the relationship between lottery gambling and postal codes where this gambling occurs, along with individual-level characteristics predicting at-risk or problem gambling (ARPG) among Massachusetts residents. A geographic information systems (GIS) spatial analysis was conducted to identify vulnerable areas based on neighborhood characteristics, lottery sales, and ARPG. GIS methods involved geocoding lottery agent addresses and integrating them into a geodatabase, enabling precise spatial analysis and visualization. This approach allowed us to examine spatial patterns in

Neighborhood Violence Impacts on HIV and STI Testing Among Sexual Minority Youth in the United States.

In the United States (U.S.), sexual minority youth (SMY) are disproportionately impacted by HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and structurally marginalized from routine testing for HIV and STI. This study examines neighborhood violence predictors (saw violence, safety concerns, and being threatened) on HIV and STI testing among a sample of SMY in the U.S. Data came from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System (YRBSS). Weighted bivariate and multilevel logistic regressions examined the odds of ever testing for HIV and STIs in the past 12 months and neighborhood vio

Associations between neighbourhood socioeconomic disadvantage and psychological distress among Australian adults: longitudinal analysis of the HILDA survey (2007-2021).

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders contribute substantially to the global burden of disease. The neighbourhood socioeconomic environment is a key determinant of mental health, even after accounting for individual-level socioeconomic factors. However, few longitudinal studies have examined this relationship. This study examined longitudinal associations between neighbourhood socioeconomic disadvantage and psychological distress from three perspectives: overall associations, trends over time and changing neighbourhood exposures. METHODS: Data were from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Aus

Place-based harms and hidden strengths: a qualitative study exploring facets of neighborhood disinvestment driving opioid overdose among black individuals.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant efforts to address the opioid overdose crisis, Black people who use drugs (PWUD) face unabating, disproportionate increases in opioid overdose death (OOD) rates. These inequities persist in treatment admissions, utilization of medication for opioid use disorder, and treatment retention. Research has linked neighborhood disinvestment - a process of urban decline driven by policy-related changes in neighborhood demand and desirability leading to decreased population, physical and economic erosion, and poorer quality of life for residents - to increased rates of OO
