Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) have major consequences on the patient's health and life. Voluntary muscle paralysis caused by spinal cord damage affects the patient's independence. Following SCI, an irreversible motor and sensory deficit occurs (spasticity, muscle paralysis, atrophy, pain, gait disorders, pain). This pathology has implications on the whole organism: on the osteoarticular, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genito-urinary, skin, metabolic disorders, and neuro-psychic systems. The rehabilitation process for a subject having SCIs can be considered complex, sinc

Poliomyelitis emerged in Europe as an epidemic disease at the end of the 19th century. During the thirties of the twentieth century it reached great intensity in the United States and Canada, but it was after the Second World War when the disease became a serious world public health problem, which punished several countries of the world, including Mexico. Poliomyelitis is a very contagious viral disease that invades the central nervous system (destroys motor neurons) that frightened the Mexican population in the first half of the twentieth century, not so much by high mortality and morbidity f

BACKGROUND: Respiratory muscle paralysis is a serious complication of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). Factors that govern duration and recovery from respiratory paralysis are unclear.
AIM: To correlate electrophysiological parameters in critically ill GBS with duration of mechanical ventilation and outcome at discharge.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of a large cohort (n=93; M:F 59:34; mean age: 33.51+21.4 years) of critically-ill patients with GBS seen over one decade was retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: The duration of mechanical ventilation was <15 days (n = 38), 16-30 days (n = 24), and >…

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a neurodegenerative disease defined by axonal loss and gliosis of upper and lower motor neurones in the motor cortex, lower brainstem nuclei and ventral horn of the spinal cord. MND is currently incurable and has a poor prognosis, with death typically occurring 3 to 5 years after disease onset. The disease is characterised by rapidly progressive weakness leading to paralysis, fasciculations, bulbar symptoms (including dysarthria and dysphagia) and respiratory compromise. Respiratory complications arise as a result of weakness of upper airway (pharyngeal and laryn

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute polyradiculoneuropathy associated with dysimmune processes, often related to a previous infectious exposure. During Italian severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 outbreak, a woman presented with a rapidly progressive flaccid paralysis with unilateral facial neuropathy after a few days of mild respiratory symptoms. Coronavirus was detected by nasopharyngeal swab, but there was no evidence of its presence in her cerebrospinal fluid, which confirmed the typical albumin-cytological dissociation of GBS, along with consistent neurophysiological dat

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that can present with skeletal muscle involvement, ocular muscles involvement and can progress to respiratory muscle paralysis. Here, we present a unique case of type 2 respiratory failure due to myasthenia gravis with the delayed ocular presentation. A 46-year-old female patient presented to the outpatient clinic with complaints of dyspnea. On further evaluation, she was found to be hypercapnic on arterial blood gas analysis with no muscular weakness in any of the limbs. The patient further progressed to ocular symptoms. With the use o

There exists an abundance of barriers that hinder functional recovery following spinal cord injury, especially at chronic stages. Here, we examine the rescue of breathing up to 1.5 years following cervical hemisection in the rat. In spite of complete hemidiaphragm paralysis, a single injection of chondroitinase ABC in the phrenic motor pool restored robust and persistent diaphragm function while improving neuromuscular junction anatomy. This treatment strategy was more effective when applied chronically than when assessed acutely after injury. The addition of intermittent hypoxia conditioning

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the results of endoscopic posterior cordotomy using microdissection electrodes in patients with bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Eleven patients underwent endoscopic posterior cordotomy using a radiofrequency Arrowtip monopolar needle. Preoperative-postoperative exercise tolerance, airway, and voice evaluation were performed in all patients. Two patients required a secondary revision operation due to granulation and crust formation and respiratory problems. No other complications were encountered. Two patients with tracheotomy cannulas were decannulated

INTRODUCTION: We present a case of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) with a diaphragm paralysis as the primary cause of ventilatory failure. FSHD is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder with a restricted pattern of weakness. Although respiratory weakness is a relatively unknown in FSHD, it is not uncommon.
METHODS: We report on the clinical findings of a 68-year old male who presented with severe dyspnea while supine.
RESULTS: Supplementing our clinical findings with laboratory, electrophysiological and radiological performances led to the diagnosis of diaphragm paralysis. Ar

The two most common early complications of thyroid surgery are hypocalcemia (20-30%) and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury (5-11%). Bilateral recurrent nerve paralysis resulting in adduction of the vocal cords is a rare life-threatening complication (occurring in less than 0.1% of cases that requires emergency management. Prevention of complications depends on careful operative technique and is enhanced for some teams by the use of specific techniques such as intraoperative neuromonitoring. Postsurgical hypocalcemia is managed by the administration of calcium plus vitamin D for at least 10 days

Invasive pulmonary coinfection with Mucor and Aspergillus is rare. Bilateral vocal cord paralysis resulting from coinfection with these two fungi to our knowledge has not been reported in the literature. We report a young woman with diabetes who presented with symptoms of community acquired pneumonia in association with hoarseness of voice. Investigations revealed air space consolidation of the right upper lobe, evidence of mediastinal involvement extending into the paratracheal space and entrapment of right upper lobe pulmonary artery. Bronchoscopy revealed bilateral vocal cord paralysis and

The purpose of this report is to present a rare case of anterior spinal artery syndrome (ASAS) in which there proved to be a combined lesion of paralysis and adhesion. A 26-year-old woman with a history of ASAS complained of difficulty of tracheal decannulation. In 1988, she was intubated and underwent tracheotomy because of respiratory muscle weakness, and she was decannulated in 1990. In 1998, she had cesarean delivery under general anesthesia, and postdelivery dyspnea necessitated tracheotomy again. On her first visit to us, endoscopic examination revealed bilateral vocal fold immobility at

Usually dysphonia is the result of a functional disorder of the larynx. It can also result from paresis or paralysis of a hemilarynx. Four patients, men aged 57, 41, 42 and 18 years, had a neurological cause of paralysis of a hemilarynx. Processes responsible for this kind of pathology can appear at three different levels: central, nuclear and peripheral. Each of the four patients had a disorder at the peripheral level: two had a tumour, in one the vagus nerve was severed during lobectomy for squamous cell carcinoma (iatrogenic), and in the last one an upper respiratory viral infection was the

In a 59-year-old man in complete health a pure motor polyneuropathic syndrome with quadruplegia, swallowing and respiratory paralysis developed over a few hours. A few days later he died with the clinical picture of septicaemia. In a 59-year-old woman who had been investigated and treated for a suspected carcinoma for several months a predominantly distal sensomotoric polyneuropathy syndrome developed. The further course of disease was completely misleading as regards the diagnosis due to an acutely occurring transection syndrome with flaccid paraplegia, loss of reflexes, and bladder and recta…

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a rare small-vessel vasculitis that may affect different organs, leading to a highly variable and often challenging initial clinical presentation. We report the case of a 67-year-old man presenting with acute non-exertional dyspnoea and chest tightness. He had a history of adult-onset asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis and peripheral eosinophilia. Imaging revealed bilateral diaphragmatic elevation, and needle electromyography confirmed diaphragmatic paralysis. His medical history, combined with the presence of an eosinophilic exudative pleural effus

Although amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) does not directly affect the lung parenchyma, it can jeopardize the mechanical function of the respiratory system. About one-quarter of ALS patients have had at least one prior misdiagnosis. Therefore, a high clinical suspicion, and careful correlation of physical examination and electromyography (EMG) are needed to reach the correct diagnosis. We report a 65-year-old man who presented with a progressive exertional dyspnea. He was subsequently found to have a diaphragmatic paralysis that was felt to be secondary to spinal cord stenosis. However, his
