The association between the cardiac metabolic index and rapid kidney function decline and CKD in individuals with different glucose metabolism statuses: results from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The Cardiometabolic Index (CMI) is a new measure that combines fat distribution and lipid profiles. However, its relationship with rapid decline in renal function and the chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially in individuals with varying glucose metabolism, is still unclear. METHOD: This study included 3,485 participants aged 45 and above from the China Longitudinal Study on Health and Retirement (CHARLS), with baseline assessments in 2011-2012 and follow-ups in 2015 and 2018. Participants were grouped into four categories (Q1-Q4) based on baseline CMI levels. The primary outcom…

Rural-Urban Inequalities in Poor Self-Rated Health, Self-Reported Functional Disabilities, and Depression among Chinese Older Adults: Evidence from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011 and 2015.

The household registration system (Hukou) in China classifies persons into rural or urban citizens and determines eligibility for state-provided services and welfare. Not taking actual residence into account may underestimate rural-urban differences. This study investigates rural-urban inequalities in self-reported health outcomes among older adults aged 60+, taking into account both Hukou and actual residence, adjusting for sociodemographic determinants, based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011 and 2015. Self-Rated Health (SRH) was assessed with a single qu…

The influence of the Big Five inventory on quality of life in people with Parkinson's disease aged 50 and above: A Longitudinal Analysis from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE).

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) significantly reduces quality of life (QoL), particularly due to its complex interplay of motor and nonmotor symptoms. While personality traits influence QoL in chronic diseases, their longitudinal effects in people with PD (PwPD) remain underexplored. This study evaluates the longitudinal predictive influence of neuroticism, conscientiousness, and openness on QoL in PwPD over two waves of the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). METHODS: This study utilized longitudinal data from 100 PwPD participants in waves 7 and 8 of the Survey o…

Recent UK retirees' views about the work-related factors which influenced their decision to retire: a qualitative study within the Health and Employment After Fifty (HEAF) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Lower birth rates and increasing longevity have resulted in ageing populations in European countries. These demographic changes place challenges on pension provision as numbers of those who are economically inactive and retired increase relative to those in paid work. Therefore, governments need workers to postpone retirement and work to older ages. Whilst health and wealth are important in retirement decision-making, considerably less is known about the effects of workplace factors. The aim of this study was to explore the views of recent UK retirees about the role that work-relat…
