Ixodes ricinus is the only one of six tick species reported from Finland found to carry viruses. It transmits tick-borne encephalitis and Uukuniemi viruses, and transmission of a Kemerovo group virus is suggested by antibody findings. Tick-borne encephalitis is common only in the SW-archipelago; it is also found near the SE-boarder but is very rare elsewhere. In contrast, Uukuniemi virus is common throughout the distribution area of I. ricinus, being commoner on the mainland than in the archipelago. Medium, large and small mammals participate in the cycle of tick-borne encephalitis virus, thou…

BACKGROUND: To predict the risk of tick-borne disease, it is critical to understand the ecological factors that determine the abundance of ticks. In Europe, the sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus) transmits a number of important diseases including Lyme borreliosis. The aim of this long-term study was to determine the abiotic and biotic factors driving the annual abundance of I. ricinus at a location in Switzerland where Lyme borreliosis is endemic.
METHODS: Over a 15-year period (2004 to 2018), we monitored the abundance of I. ricinus ticks on a monthly basis at three different elevations on Chaumont…

Bartonella (B.) henselae is the zoonotic agent of cat scratch disease. B. henselae has been associated with therapy-resistant Lyme disease in humans suggesting that B. henselae and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato might be transmitted concurrently by ticks. In the present study we found that 16 (6.9%) of 230 Ixodes ricinus collected from humans harboured DNA of Bartonella spp. Fifteen positive ticks were infected with B. henselae and one tick with B. clarridgeiae. Twenty-five percent of the 16 Bartonella positive ticks were co-infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. Our data show that B.…

A molecular screening for tick-borne pathogens was carried out in engorged and in questing ticks collected in Verbano Cusio Ossola county, Piemonte region, Italy. Engorged ticks were removed from wild and domestic animal hosts. The most abundant and common tick species in the area was Ixodes ricinus (192 adults, 907 nymphs). Few individuals of Ixodes hexagonus (15) and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (7) were found among the ticks removed from domestic animals (46 examined ticks). The presence of Rickettsia spp., Borrelia burgdorferi sensu latu, Francisella tularensis and Coxiella burnetii was evalua…

This study is part of a project that aimed to better understand the role of small mammals in the maintenance of the tick-borne encephalitis virus at four different sites in Switzerland. Here we focused on the detection of three intracellular pathogens, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., and Babesia spp., in field-derived ticks that detached from 79 small mammals. We analyzed 465 Ixodes ricinus larvae after their molt and 14 semiengorged I. trianguliceps that were feeding on rodents. No pathogen was detected in I. trianguliceps. In I. ricinus, the most frequently detected pathogen was …

Ricin, a type-2 Ribosome-Inactivating Protein (RIP), is a dangerous biotoxin derived from castor plant seeds. It is classified as a Schedule 1 agent by the Chemical Weapon Convention (CWC) and a Category B agent by the Biological and Toxin Weapon Convention (BTWC). Despite their high toxicity, castor seed plants are widely used for the production of castor oil and in folk medicine systems for the treatment of various diseases. Due to the lack of a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medication, early detection of biologically active ricin is critical for implementing suitable counterme

Habitats with the sympatric occurrence of several ixodid tick species are significant from an epidemiological perspective. These habitats can influence the diversity and prevalence of tick-borne pathogens, and their monitoring can help estimate the risk of infection. A total of 1260 questing ticks from five species (Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor marginatus, Dermacentor reticulatus, Haemaphysalis concinna, and Haemaphysalis inermis) were collected from vegetation using the flagging method in three different habitats in eastern Slovakia. Additionally, 900 rodent-attached ticks of six species (I. r…

Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes scapularis are the main vectors for the causative agents of Lyme borreliosis and a wide range of other pathogens. Repeated tick-bites are known to lead to tick rejection; a phenomenon designated as tick immunity. Tick immunity is mainly directed against tick salivary gland proteins (TSGPs) and has been shown to partially protect against experimental Lyme borreliosis. TSGPs recognized by antibodies from tick immune animals could therefore be interesting candidates for an anti-tick vaccine, which might also block pathogen transmission. To identify conserved Ixodes TSGPs…

Ixodes ricinus is the most common tick species parasitizing humans in Europe, and the main vector of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative agent of Lyme disease in the continent. This tick species also harbors the endosymbiont Midichloria mitochondrii, and there is strong evidence that this bacterium is inoculated into the vertebrate host during the blood meal. A high proportion of tick bites remains unnoticed due to rarity of immediate symptoms, implying the risk of occult tick-borne infections in turn a potential risk factor for the onset of chronic-degenerative diseases. Since suit…

The purpose of the investigation was to chart the existence and extent of arboviruses in Norway and provide information on their possible significance. Virus isolations have been attempted from ticks (I. ricinus, I. trianguliceps, I. uriae) and host animal blood from selected locations. Serological screenings have been performed with bird, small mammal, cattle and human blood. Five virus strians have been identified to date. Three of them are related to Uukuniemi virus group. Two identical strains from I. uriae demonstrate the morphology of coronaviruses and no antigenic relationship to major …

The hard tick Ixodes ricinus transmits a variety of zoonotic pathogens, including Babesia divergens, the most common cause of bovine babesiosis in northern Europe. In endemic areas, cattle are rarely clinically affected, as animals up to the age of nine months are resistant against relevant clinical disease and develop protective premunity. However, outbreaks in immunologically naïve herds may lead to considerable losses. Such an outbreak with a high mortality rate occurred in 2018 on a northern German beef production farm, as previously reported. The present study provides an update on the ep…

This study presents the results of a national survey in Spain on the distribution of ticks on owned dogs, their phenology and the associated pathogens over one year. In the study, 1628 adult ticks were collected on 660 dogs presented to 26 veterinary practices, of which 507 dogs (76.8%) carried at least one adult tick. The primary species of ticks were Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (53%), Dermacentor reticulatus (9%), Ixodes ricinus (9%), and I. hexagonus (4%). Parasitism by two species of these ticks was rare. The four species showed a clear association with the biogeographical features of th…
