Beyond the membrane: lipid rafts and oxysterols establish cholesterol as a dynamic signaling hub while underlying the cholesterol paradox in cancer.

Metabolic reprogramming of cholesterol extends beyond its canonical role in membrane biogenesis, serving as a dynamic signaling hub that facilitates tumor progression and therapy resistance. In cancer therapy, the limited clinical efficacy and variable outcomes of non-selective lipid-lowering interventions, such as statins, underscore an incomplete understanding of these underlying regulatory networks. This review addresses the paradoxical roles of cholesterol in oncology, in which cancer cells leverage oxysterols and membrane lipid rafts to promote metastasis, immunosuppression, and therapy r

Greentree white paper: sexual violence, genitoanal injury, and HIV: priorities for research, policy, and practice.

The links between sexual violence, genitoanal injury, and HIV are understudied but potentially significant for understanding the epidemic's disproportionate impacts on young women and girls, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, other hyperendemic areas, and conflict-affected regions. A Scientific Research Planning Meeting was convened by the Social Science Research Council at the Greentree Foundation in New York, March 19-20, 2012, bringing together an interdisciplinary group of researchers, clinicians, and policy makers to identify knowledge needs and gaps in three key areas: (1) the role of g

A two-clock model of circadian timing in the immune system of mammals.

It has been confirmed that clock genes, as well as the pineal hormone, have a role in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus, the circadian endogenous pacemaker. It seems that the peripheral clock genes in the cells of the immune system subtly control biorhythms; their seeming lack of impact only showing that they work well. Some biorhythms even seem to be independent of a light/dark circadian regime. This apparent conflict in the mammalian time structure can be resolved by a two-clocks control model involving: (a) the endogenous gene clock, which is dominant in the neural system and (b) the

Burnout and psychosocial working conditions in a multidisciplinary hospital radiology team: a cross-sectional study using the job demands-resources framework.

OBJECTIVES: Burnout is a major concern in hospital radiology, but data on psychosocial work conditions remain limited. Using the job demands … primarily associated with psychosocial job demands, particularly work-life conflict, workload, and role conflicts, whereas job resources showed weaker associations except for patient-related burnout. These findings suggest a predominantly demand-driven pattern within the JD-R framework and indicate that psychosocial working conditions may represent targets for …

Role of stressful life events in induction or exacerbation of psoriasis and chronic urticaria.

BACKGROUND: The possibility of a causal influence of emotional stress, especially of stressful life events, on the course of various skin diseases has long been postulated. Previous reports addressing its influence on skin psoriasis and chronic urticaria have been mainly anecdotal. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the stressful events of life within 1 year preceding onset or exacerbation of skin disease in patients of psoriasis vulgaris and chronic urticaria. METHOD: Fifty consecutive clinically diagnosed psoriasis patients and 50 consecutive clinically diagnosed chronic urti

Study protocol for an adapted personal project analysis to measure vertical inter-goal relations on physical activity and diet.

BACKGROUND: The promotion of multiple healthy lifestyles has been implemented as part of public health efforts to prevent and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases. However, these interventions have shown a heterogeneity in their effectiveness. The pursuit of multiple daily goals may influence overall progress in achieving health goals. Horizontal inter-goal relations can be conflicting (due to time constraints) or facilitating (due to goal compatibility) and impact progress towards goal achievement. Personal values also play an important role in health promotion. Personal values dire

Identifying parent-sibling socialization profiles and their prospective associations with adolescents' interpersonal competence.

Family socialization plays a key role in adolescents' social development, yet little is known about how adolescents are socialized across different family subsystems beyond parental socialization. By using latent profile analysis to capture a holistic view of co-occurring family dynamics, this study aimed to identify different emotion socialization patterns in parent-adolescent and sibling subsystems and their longitudinal associations with adolescent interpersonal competence. Participants were 175 families with at least two children (target adolescent Mage = 14.09, 47.4% female). At baseline

Uncovering the functional contribution of the extrastriate body area in processing body vs letter stimuli-driven conflicts and errors: A 10- Hz rTMS study.

The extrastriate body area (EBA) is a category-specific occipitotemporal cortical region highly specialized in processing visual features of corporeal stimuli and plays an essential role in body and action representation. Recent evidence suggests that body and body-part stimuli can modulate response strategies in a content-driven manner during tasks involving conflict and error monitoring. However, whether and to what extent the EBA contributes to behavioural performance during the processing of representational conflicts elicited by body stimuli remains unclear. Here, we perturbed the right E

Occupational risk factors for suicide: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is one of the major health problems that imposes a heavy burden on the health system. Currently, there is a notable absence of review and meta-analysis studies capable of exploring a broader spectrum of occupational factors associated with dimensions of suicide. This study was conducted to investigate occupational risk factors related to suicide dimensions by systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses have been used. The databases searched in this study included: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. The d

Maintaining animal-source food production in conflict zones: lessons from Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: The deteriorating security situation in Europe's immediate neighbourhood has underscored the importance of safeguarding food systems during conflict. Animal-sourced foods are essential for human nutrition and play a critical role in maintaining national resilience, yet their production becomes highly vulnerable in wartime. This study explores the resilience of Ukrainian animal-sourced food systems following the 2022 Russian invasion, focusing on the perspectives of farmers and veterinarians. RESULTS: Through 18 in-depth interviews with farmers and veterinarians across occupied and

Oxytocin mediates self-other and inevitability asymmetries in high-conflict moral judgment in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is characterized by social cognition deficits, yet the neurobiological mechanisms of moral reasoning remain poorly understood. In particular, self-other differentiation and contextual sensitivity, reflected in moral asymmetries during high-conflict dilemmas, have been underexplored in relation to oxytocin, a key neuropeptide implicated in social cognition. METHODS: We recruited 58 individuals with schizophrenia and 31 healthy controls. Participants completed a validated set of high-conflict personal moral dilemmas, varying by perspective (self vs. other) and harm evi

Associations of adverse childhood experiences, inflammation, and cognition in older Black adults.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity has profound implications for cognitive health, with particularly pronounced impacts in minoritized populations. We apply an intersectionality framework to explore how distinct overlapping patterns of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) influence cognition and cognitive status in older Black adults, considering the potential mediating role of inflammatory pathways. METHODS: Participants included 536 individuals without dementia from the Minority Aging Research Study. Cognition was assessed using episodic memory, semantic memory, and perceptual speed tasks. 145

Cognitive-Motor Conflict During Step Initiation: Neural and Biomechanical Insights Into Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease.

Freezing of gait (FoG) is a disabling motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) characterized by brief episodes of inability to step, often triggered by cognitive-motor conflict. Step initiation (SI) involves anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs), which are critical for balance and movement preparation. This study aimed to investigate the neural and biomechanical correlates of FoG during SI under congruent and incongruent conditions, focusing on the supplementary motor area (SMA) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), regions associated with motor preparation and inhibitory control. The Somatosensory Cortex and Body Representation: Updating the Motor System during a Visuoproprioceptive Cue Conflict.

The brain's representation of hand position is critical for voluntary movement. Representation is multisensory, combining visual and proprioceptive cues. When these cues conflict, the brain recalibrates its unimodal estimates, shifting them closer together to compensate. Research suggests such updates to body representation are communicated to the motor system to keep hand movements accurate. The neural mechanism is unclear and may depend on how the brain integrates and recalibrates visuoproprioceptive signals: models ranging from hierarchical convergence after unisensory processing to more di

The Evolution of the Linkage Among Geopolitical Risk, the US Dollar Index, Crude Oil Prices, and Gold Prices at Multiple Scales: A Wavelet Transform-Based Dynamic Transfer Entropy Network Method.

In recent years, the correlation mechanisms between geopolitical risks and financial markets have drawn considerable attention from both academic circles and investment communities. However, their multiscale, nonlinear interactive characteristics still require further investigation. To address this, this paper proposes a dynamic nonlinear causal information network combined with a wavelet transform model and the transfer entropy method. We select the geopolitical risk index, the US dollar index, Brent and WTI crude oil prices, COMEX gold futures, and London gold prices time series as the resea

Brain Source Localization and Functional Connectivity in Group Identity Regulation of Overbidding in Contest.

Contests may be highly effective in eliciting high levels of effort, but they also carry the risk of inefficient resource allocation due to excessive effort (overbidding), squandering valuable social resources. While a growing body of research has focused on how group identity exacerbates out-group conflict, its influence on in-group conflict remains relatively unexplored. This study endeavors to explore the impact of group identity on conflicts within and between groups in competitive environments, thereby addressing gaps in the current research landscape and dissecting the involved neurobiol

Mental health outcomes in communities exposed to Armed Conflict Experiences.

BACKGROUND: Populations exposed to Armed Conflict Experiences (ACE) show different levels of impact in their mental health (i.e. clinical and positive components); however, there is limited evidence related to mental health of general population (civilians not classified as victims) exposed to ACE. Government guided mental health assessments exclude this population. The use of a newly validated Extreme Experiences Scale (EX2) seems appropriate to classify victims, ex-combatants, and civilians for their mental health assessment. METHODS: Here, we propose a novel approach to identify relationsh

Latent Class Analysis of Individual-Level Characteristics Predictive of Intervention Outcomes in Urban Male Adolescents.

Preventive intervention research dictates that new techniques are needed to elucidate what types of interventions work best for whom to prevent behavioral problems. The current investigation applies a latent class modeling structure to identify the constellation of characteristics-or profile-in urban male adolescents (n = 125, aged 15) that interrelatedly predict responses to a brief administration of an evidence-based program, Positive Adolescent Choices Training (PACT). Individual-level characteristics were selected as predictors on the basis of their association with risk behaviors and thei
