Rotaviral infections are frequent cause of the severe diarrhea in children. The only way to eliminate rotaviral infections is safe and effective vaccine. Among various rotaviral vaccines elaborated in many countries, the human-rhesus reassortant vaccine (RRV-TV) was chosen for routine immunization of infants. However, post-licensure surveillance of a rotavirus vaccine showed an increased risk of a serious adverse event following vaccination--intussusception. That forced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to withdraw the license of RRV-TV. In spite of this defeat, works for receivin

BACKGROUND: The degree of protection conferred by natural immunity is unknown for many enteropathogens, but it is important to support the development of enteric vaccines.
METHODS: We used the Andersen-Gill extension of the Cox model to estimate the effects of previous infections on the incidence of subsequent subclinical infections and diarrhea in children under 2 using quantitative molecular diagnostics in the MAL-ED cohort. We used cross-pathogen negative control associations to correct bias due to confounding by unmeasured heterogeneity of exposure and susceptibility.
RESULTS: Prior rota

Faeces samples from 218, 1 to 30-day-old, diarrheic dairy calves in 65 dairy herds were screened for the presence of Cryptosporidium and concurrent infections with rotavirus, coronavirus, F5 Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. Calves were grouped according to their age as follows: 1-7, 8-14, 15-21 and 22-30 days. Cryptosporidium infection was detected in 43.8%, 71.9%, 63.2% and 6.9% of the calves in the respective age groups. Significant differences in the detection rate of Cryptosporidium were found between the age group 22-30 days and all other age groups, and between the age group 1-7 days

BACKGROUND: Group A Rotaviruses are a major etiologic agent of gastroenteritis in infants and young children (<5 years) worldwide. Although rotavirus vaccines have been successfully administered in many countries, in India the introduction of rotavirus vaccine in national immunization program was approved in 2014. Since high disease burden and large number of genetic variants have been reported from low income countries including India, monitoring of rotavirus was initiated prior to implementation of the vaccine in the region.
METHODS: A total number of 3,582 stool samples were collected from

Rotavirus gastroenteritis is accountable for an estimated 128 500 deaths among children younger than 5 years worldwide, and the majority occur in low-income countries. Although the clinical trials of rotavirus vaccines in Bangladesh revealed a significant reduction of severe rotavirus disease by around 50%, the vaccines are not yet included in the routine immunization program. The present study was designed to provide data on rotavirus diarrhea with clinical profiles and genotypes before (2017-2019) and during the COVID-19 pandemic period (2020-2021). Fecal samples were collected from 2% of th

Salmonellosis is a leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis, responsible for invasive infections especially in young children. Reptiles are salmonella reservoirs, and the indirect contact via parents' hands may be responsible for contamination. We report on two cases of Salmonella-rotavirus coinfection secondary to the presence of turtles in the home.

Rotavirus infection is a ubiquitous illness, infecting the vast majority of children worldwide in the first 5 years of life. Rotavirus is one of the major causes of severe diarrhea in infants and young children throughout the developing and developed world. An estimated 500,000 deaths per year occur, with the burden of morbidity and mortality highest in the poorest nations. Two new oral, live, attenuated vaccines have recently shown efficacy and safety in clinical trials, and one of these, RotaTeq, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration on February 3, 2006. RotaTeq is recommended

CONCLUSIONS: Zonulin is a promising biomarker of intestinal condition, markedly elevated in rotavirus infections. Its role in defining the severity of necrotizing enterocolitis and the risk for perforation is not well described and needs further evaluation. An increase in zonulin may not be parallel to the release of inflammatory markers, and low CRP should no …

Rotavirus infection is one of the most common causes of diarrheal illness in humans. In neonatal mice, rhesus rotavirus (RRV) can induce biliary atresia (BA), a disease resulting in inflammatory obstruction of the extrahepatic biliary tract and intrahepatic bile ducts. We previously showed that the amino acid arginine (R) within the sequence SRL (amino acids 445 to 447) in the RRV VP4 protein is required for viral binding and entry into biliary epithelial cells. To determine if this single amino acid (R) influences the pathogenicity of the virus, we generated a recombinant virus with a single

Bovine rotavirus (BRV) poses a major threat to the global cattle industry, driving significant morbidity and mortality in young calves. In Yunnan Province, China, BRV is the primary cause of neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD), yet the molecular epidemiology of circulating strains remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the molecular characteristics of bovine rotavirus strains associated with a severe outbreak of the NCD on a local farm. Fecal samples were collected from 396 calves and screened for BRV by RT-PCR targeting the VP6 gene. Positive samples were subjected to virus isola

Listeria monocytogenes only occasionally causes bacterial meningitis in immunocompetent children. We report a case of L. monocytogenes meningitis associated with rotavirus gastroenteritis. The patient was a previously healthy 20-month-old girl who was admitted because of sustained fever and lethargy after suffering from gastroenteritis for 6 days. The patient's peripheral white blood cell count was 18,600/µL and the C-reactive protein level was 2.44 mg/dL. A stool sample tested positive for rotavirus antigen. A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample showed pleocytosis. Cultures of the CSF and stool

657 hospitalized children with acute diarrheal disease were studied for bacterial and rotaviral etiology. Cryptosporidium presence was followed in 123 children. Intestinal pathogens were detected in 195 (29.6%) cases: 132 (20.3%) enterobacteria, 47 (7.1%) rotaviruses, 4 (3.2%) Cryptosporidium sp. and 12 (1.8%) combined infections. Among enterobacteria, E. coli was the most frequent (10% cases) with enteropathogenic (EPEC), enterotoxigenic (ETEC), enterohemorrhagic (EHEC) and enteroinvasive (EIEC) groups. Other isolated pathogens were Salmonella--21 (3.1%), C. jejuni/coli--13 (1.9%), Shigella--

A 1-year study of the etiology of acute diarrhea complicated by severe (10%) dehydration, active bleeding, shock and cardiovascular collapse, pneumonia, acute renal failure, or seizures in infants under 18 months of age was performed in Cairo, Egypt. Of 145 infants, 19 (13%) died or left the hospital moribund; the remaining 126 patients were classified as having potentially fatal illness. A variety of enteropathogens were identified with approximately equal frequency in the fatal and nonfatal complicated cases as well as in 135 controls with severe uncomplicated diarrhea. The agents most frequ

During systematic active surveillance of the causes of diarrhea in patients admitted to the Infectious Diseases and Beliaghata General Hospital in Kolkata, India, we looked for 26 known gastrointestinal pathogens in fecal samples from 2,748 patients. Samples from about one-third (29%) of the patients contained multiple pathogens. Polymicrobial infections frequently contained Vibrio cholerae O1 and rotavirus. When these agents were present, some co-infecting agents were found significantly less often (p = 10 (-5) to 10 (-33), some were detected significantly more often (p = 10 (-5) to 10 (-26),

Rotavirus (RV) is one of the leading causes of acute viral gastroenteritis in young children and various neonatal animals worldwide, posing significant challenges to both public health and livestock production. Porcine rotavirus (PoRV) induces acute enteric infection in neonatal piglets, resulting in severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, and is frequently associated with co-infections that disrupt gastrointestinal function and cause huge economic losses. At present, no specific antiviral therapy is available for PoRV infection, and vaccination remains the most cost-effective and widely u

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus remains an important cause of gastroenteritis and has been associated with the hospitalization of 34 to 53 per 10 000 children <5 years of age in the United States annually from 2008 to 2012. Rotavirus vaccines are underused compared with other routine vaccines. We describe rotavirus vaccine coverage and missed opportunities for rotavirus vaccination.
METHODS: The National Immunization Survey is a random-digit-dial, population-based survey including US children 19 to 35 months of age. Children fully vaccinated for rotavirus were those who received 3 doses of the pentaval

IntroductionTwo vaccines available for protection against rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE), Rotarix and RotaTeq, have contributed to a large decrease in the incidence of paediatric diarrhoea in countries where they have been used. However, they have also led to a small increase in the risk of intussusception. Methods: We compare the number of prevented hospitalisations for RVGE to the number of vaccine-induced hospitalised intussusceptions in France. Results: With 9.5% coverage (French 2015 estimation), vaccination was estimated to prevent, annually, a median of 1,074 hospitalisations (2.5th a
