Assessing maladaptive repetitive thought in clinical disorders: A critical review of existing measures.

Rumination and worry have recently been grouped under the broader transdiagnostic construct of repetitive thought (Watkins, 2008). The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of scales used to assess repetitive thinking across a broad range of contexts: depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, illness, interpersonal difficulties, positive affect, and so forth. We also include scales developed or adapted for children and adolescents. In the extant literature, measures of repetitive thinking generally show small-to-moderate correlations with measures of psychopathology. This review highligh

Rumination and posttraumatic stress symptoms in trauma-exposed adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rumination is a correlate of increased posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms. This study quantitatively reviewed the literature on rumination and PTS symptoms in trauma-exposed adults, extending prior research by using an inclusive definition of trauma, addressing PTS symptom clusters, and conducting moderator analyses. METHOD: Searches were conducted in PsycINFO, PubMed, PILOTS, EBSCO Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, Google Scholar, and Dissertation Abstracts. Sixty-four unique samples from 59 articles were included. RESULTS: Results showed a moderate,

Rumination, experiential avoidance, and dysfunctional thinking in eating disorders.

The majority of research in eating disorders (ED) has investigated the content of disorder-specific thoughts, while few studies have addressed underlying cognitive-affective processes. A better understanding of processes underpinning ED may have important implications for treatment development. Two studies were conducted that investigated levels of rumination, beliefs about rumination, experiential avoidance, and aspects of schematic thinking in individuals with eating pathology. The latter was assessed with a newly designed ED-Sentence Completion Task (ED-SCT). Study 1 (N = 177) examined rela

Effects of rumination and post-traumatic growth on health behavior among older patients with coronary heart disease.

The study aimed to investigate the effects of rumination and post-traumatic growth (PTG) on health behavior among older patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). The Event-Related Rumination Inventory, Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, and Cardiac Health Behavior Scale were used to assess 429 older adult patients with CHD. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), hierarchical multiple regression analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM). Results revealed that both intrusive and deliberate rumination were significantly associated wi

Brain mechanisms of rumination and negative self-referential processing in adolescent depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is linked to cognitive biases towards more negative and less positive self-relevant information. Rumination, perseverative negative thinking about the past and the self, may contribute to these biases. METHODS: 159 adolescents (12-18 years), with a range of depression symptoms, completed the SRET during fMRI. Multiple regressions tested associations between conventional self-report and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) measured rumination, and neural and behavioral responses during a self-referent encoding task (SRET). RESULTS: Higher rumination (conventional self-

Genetic and environmental influences on adolescent rumination and its association with depressive symptoms.

Rumination is an important cognitive vulnerability for adolescent and adult depression. However, little is known about the aetiological origins of rumination, as well as its association with depression. Adolescent rumination (self-report) and depressive symptoms (self- and parent-report) were assessed in 674 pairs of same-gender Chinese adolescent twins (11-17 years of age). Females accounted for 53.7 % of the sample. There were significant correlations between self-reported rumination and self-reported depression (r = 0.41), as well as parent-reported adolescent depression (r = 0.22). Genetic

The role of rumination in posttraumatic growth in people struggling with cancer.

Introduction: Cognitive processes, especially ruminations, play an important role in the emergence of the consequences of experienced traumatic events. The aim of the present study was to establish whether in people struggling with cancer there is an association between the degree of PTG and the level of deliberate and intrusive ruminations, occurring soon after the diagnosis of disease and currently, and whether deliberate ruminations play a mediating role between intrusive ruminations and PTG. Methods: The results of a survey of 71 persons with various kinds of cancer, aged 19-67 years (M =

Deconstructing the heterogeneity of adolescent social anxiety: A cognitive diagnostic approach from a sex perspective.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive vulnerability patterns of adolescent social anxiety are highly sex-specific. However, traditional data-driven subtyping approaches often overlook these sex-specific patterns due to a lack of direct theoretical mapping. This study introduces Cognitive Diagnosis Models (CDMs) to identify sex-specific cognitive subtypes, exploring how these cognitive patterns manifest within high-risk comorbid contexts. METHODS: A sample of 2005 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 12.9 years; 54.5% male) was assessed on four core cognitive attributes: post-event rumination, negative social inte

The role of dual-tasking, mindfulness, and rumination on gait in older adults with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a debilitating condition in older adults that can lead to mobility impairments, disability, and premature death. While older adults with chronic pain demonstrate gait impairments compared to healthy older adults, how gait patterns change following cognitive or psychological tasks remain unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do gait patterns change from usual walking to dual-task walking, following an acute rumination task, and following an acute mindfulness task in older adults with chronic pain? Secondarily, what is the relationship between pain, number of pain medicati

Is higher ego strength always better? Ego strength, ICT demands, and age in nurses' safety performance.

PURPOSE: This study examines how information and communication technology (ICT) demands influence nurses' safety performance in healthcare organizations. Drawing on the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) framework, it investigates negative rumination as a cognitive mechanism linking ICT demands to safety compliance and safety participation, and explores how ego strength and age jointly shape this process through a three-way interaction. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A two-wave survey was conducted with 498 nurses from ten hospitals in China, separated by a three-week interval. Using structural equat

Are experiences of psychosis associated with unhelpful metacognitive coping strategies? A systematic review of the evidence.

This review investigated whether unhelpful metacognitive coping strategies, such as attentional biases, worry, rumination, and thought control, are associated with experiences of psychosis. These processes, known collectively as the Cognitive Attentional Syndrome (CAS), form a central tenet of the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model. Three research questions based on assumptions underlying the CAS were addressed. It was predicted that processes of (a) self-focused processing, (b) negative perseverative thinking (worry and rumination), and (c) counterproductive thought control would be ass

A preliminary investigation of the relationship between induced rumination and state body image dissatisfaction and anxiety.

The current study investigated the relationship between cognitive rumination and state body image distress using an experimental design. Specifically, the study examined whether participants induced to ruminate about an imagined negative body image event would report more body image dissatisfaction and anxiety compared to those induced to distract themselves. Ninety-nine undergraduate women completed two measures to assess depressive symptomology and baseline body image distress. All participants then silently read a body image scenario intended to evoke negative emotions. After reading the sc

Childhood emotional abuse and depression symptoms among Chinese adolescents: The sequential masking effect of ruminative thinking and deliberate rumination.

BACKGROUND: This study delves into the relationship between childhood trauma and adolescent depression symptoms, specifically examining the distinct roles of ruminative thinking and deliberate rumination in mediating this connection. The focus is on exploring whether these cognitive processes, namely ruminative thinking and deliberate rumination, operate differently and sequentially in mediating the impact of childhood emotional abuse (CEA) on the development of depression symptoms among Chinese adolescents. METHODS: The study involved gathering data from 489 adolescents, with a relatively ba

A seven day actigraphy-based study of rumination and sleep disturbance among young adults with depressive symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Trait ruminators exhibit significantly higher levels of sleep disturbance than those without this cognitive vulnerability. However, support for the sleep disruptive effects of state rumination, especially in the pre-sleep period, is rare, and hindered by methodological drawbacks such as self-report and single night assays of sleep. Finally, despite the pervasiveness of the ruminative response style among individuals with depression, the association between rumination and sleep disturbance has not been explored in this population. The present study employed a week-long daily samplin

[Metacognitive Therapy in the Treatment of Depression.].

Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) developed by A. Wells is one of the new developments of Behavior Therapy. It assumes that not the content of cognition is important for the treatment of psychological disorders. Instead of this from a metacognitive perspective persistent and unflexible patterns of thinking and focusing attention and therewith associated dysfunctional coping behaviors play a crucial role for their development and maintenance. These patterns are called Cog-nitive Attentional Syndrome (CAS). In depres-sion the CAS consists of excessive rumination and worry, focusing attention on potent

Association of social support with negative emotions among Chinese adolescents during Omicron-related lockdown of Shenzhen City: The roles of rumination and sleep quality.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents are likely to suffer from negative emotions such as depression and anxiety due to the rapid development of biological, cognitive and social changes. Previous studies have indicated possible risk (rumination) and protective (good social support and high sleep quality) factors for depression and anxiety among this age group. The present study is the first to investigate the association between social support and negative emotions during the Outbreak of Omicron variant, on this basis, to further determine the mediating role of rumination and sleep quality on this link. Adverse childhood experiences and repetitive negative thinking in adulthood: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that repetitive negative thinking (worry and rumination) may be more common among adults who have been exposed to childhood adverse experiences, leading to emotional disorders and other adverse outcomes. The current study aims to present a comprehensive evaluation of the literature examining the relationship between the exposure to childhood adversities, repetitive negative thinking and clinical outcomes in adulthood. METHODS: In accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria, a search was conducted on PubM

Algorithmic platform management and risk-taking behavior among Chinese food delivery riders.

Food delivery riders in China face widespread risk-taking behavior. This behavior is tied to algorithmic platform management. It is become more pressing as the digital platform economy expands. Drawing on Cognitive Appraisal Theory and Persistent Cognition Theory, this study develops a dual-pathway model integrating online immediate and offline sustained cognition, using two-wave questionnaire data from 320 riders in Changsha. Results show algorithmic platform management promotes risk-taking behavior via perceived algorithmic control and emotional rumination, while inhibiting it through proble

Cross-Cultural and Gender Invariance of Transdiagnostic Processes in the United States and Singapore.

The Research Domain Criteria define cognitive and emotional processes (e.g., rumination, intolerance of uncertainty, anxiety sensitivity, emotion dysregulation) as key transdiagnostic elements of psychopathology. However, there is currently a dearth of construct equivalence studies on measures of these processes. We thus aimed to validate the latent structures of five transdiagnostic constructs using established and newer measures: two-factor Rumination-Reflection Questionnaire, six-factor Perseverative Cognitions Questionnaire, two-factor Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, three-factor Anxiety

Cognitive rigidity in unipolar depression and obsessive compulsive disorder: examination of task switching, Stroop, working memory updating and post-conflict adaptation.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and depressive rumination are both characterized by cognitive rigidity. We examined the performance of 17 patients (9 suffering from unipolar depression [UD] without OCD, and 8 suffering from OCD without UD), and 17 control participants matched on age, gender, language and education, on a battery covering the four main executive functions. Results indicated that, across both disorders, patients required more trials to adjust to single-task conditions after experiencing task switching, reflecting slow disengagement from switching mode, and showed abnormal pos
