Sex disparities in cardiovascular health metrics among rural-dwelling older adults in China: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular health (CVH) metrics among Chinese older adults are poorly understood. We investigated sex disparities in CVH metrics and their management among rural-dwelling older adults in China. METHODS: This community-based study included 5026 participants (age ≥ 65 years; 57.2% women) in the baseline survey of a multimodal intervention study in rural China. In March-September 2018, data were collected through face-to-face interviews, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests. We defined six CVH metrics (three behavioral factors-smoking, body mass index, and physical activit

Mental health symptoms among rural adolescents with different parental migration experiences: A cross-sectional study in China.

In rural regions of China, the rural-to-urban migrant worker population and their left-behind children-60 million children who remain in home villages-have diversified the rural adolescence experience in terms of family life, compounding known mental health disparities. This study examined the impact of a comprehensive panel of home- and school-related variables on the prevalence of three common mental health complaints among rural adolescents. Data were collected using a self-formulated questionnaire administered to 1347 seventh grade students in a rural county of Hunan Province in Fall 2017.

An integrated community health worker intervention in rural Nepal: a type 2 hybrid effectiveness-implementation study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based medicines, technologies, and protocols exist to prevent many of the annual 300,000 maternal, 2.7 million neonatal, and 9 million child deaths, but they are not being effectively implemented and utilized in rural areas. Nepal, one of South Asia's poorest countries with over 80% of its population living in rural areas, exemplifies this challenge. Community health workers are an important cadre in low-income countries where human resources for health and health care infrastructure are limited. As local women, they are uniquely positioned to understand and successfully n

Delivery of an Ebola Virus-Positive Stillborn Infant in a Rural Community Health Center, Sierra Leone, 2015.

We report the case of an Ebola virus (EBOV) RNA-negative pregnant woman who delivered an EBOV RNA-positive stillborn infant at a community health center in rural Sierra Leone, 1 month after the mother's last possible exposure. The mother was later found to be immunoglobulins M and G positive indicating previous infection. The apparent absence of Ebola symptoms and not recognizing that the woman had previous contact with an Ebola patient led health workers performing the delivery to wear only minimal personal protection, potentially exposing them to a high risk of EBOV infection. This case emph

The use of nominal group technique in identifying community health priorities in Moshi rural district, northern Tanzania.

This article highlights issues pertaining to identification of community health priorities in a resource poor setting. Community involvement is discussed by drawing experience of involving lay people in identifying priorities in health care through the use of Nominal Group Technique. The identified health problems are compared using four selected village communities of Moshi district in Kilimanjaro region, Tanzania. We conducted this study to trace the experience and knowledge of lay people as a supplement to using 'health experts' in priority setting using malaria as a tracer condition. The p

The long-term reproductive health consequences of female genital cutting in rural Gambia: a community-based survey.

This paper examines the association between traditional practices of female genital cutting (FGC) and adult women's reproductive morbidity in rural Gambia. In 1999, we conducted a cross-sectional community survey of 1348 women aged 15-54 years, to estimate the prevalence of reproductive morbidity on the basis of women's reports, a gynaecological examination and laboratory analysis of specimens. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used to compare the prevalence of each morbidity between cut and uncut women adjusting for possible confounders. A total of 1157 women consented to gy

Exploring palliative care clinical skills and practice capability among rural allied health professionals: a learning needs analysis.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care improves quality of life for people with serious illness and their families by relieving suffering. In rural areas, access to specialist services is limited, with generalist clinicians often providing care. Allied health professionals in these settings may have varying levels of confidence and knowledge, which can affect care quality. Understanding their learning needs is essential to develop targeted education and improve service delivery. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the learning needs and education preferences of rural allied health clinicians in deli

Assessing health-regulating ecosystem services in rural landscapes: An integrated approach using physiological and visual semantic data.

To support health-oriented rural revitalization, effective management of rural green infrastructure requires robust tools for quantifying restorative ecosystem services and informing evidence-based design. This study develops and tests a multimodal evaluation framework that integrates subjective mood assessment (POMS), physiological stress indicators (GSR and HRV), and deep-learning-based visual semantic analysis (SegFormer) to examine how landscape structure relates to health-relevant restorative responses. The framework was applied in four rural landscape typologies-flat-farmland, hilly-fore

Compensatory Effects of Long-Term Care Insurance on Mental Health Among Rural Older Women: Evidence from China.

Background: Rural older women in China face intersecting disadvantages including eroded family support, limited pension coverage, and high social isolation that elevate depressive symptoms. Although Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) has expanded rapidly since 2016 to provide both financial protection and formal care services for older adults, whether it can compensate for depleted informal support and protect mental health among this vulnerable population remains unknown. Methods: We used five waves of CHARLS (2011-2020) with 2193 rural women aged ≥60. We employed a staggered difference-in-diffe
