Rates of proliferation, apoptosis and cytokine expression were measured in bone marrow (BM) biopsies of 164 myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients. There were 107 males and 57 females. Median age was 69 years and 101 had refractory anemia (RA), 17 RA with ringed sideroblasts (RARS), 38 with RA and excess blasts (RAEB) and 8 with RAEB in transformation (RAEB-t). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate nuclear grading on fine needle cytopunctures of breast carcinoma, which is of special interest when neoadjuvant chemotherapy is planned.
STUDY DESIGN: In a prospective study, we compared cytologic grading, based on nuclear parameters (pleomorphism and mitosis), to modified Scarff-Bloom-Richardson histologic grading in 105 primary operable breast carcinomas. The results of these two nuclear grading systems were compared to Feulgen image analysis data from the corresponding cytologic samples.

Unilateral acoustic tumors rarely recur after total translabyrinthine removal. Review of the patient records of the House Ear Clinic revealed five recurrent tumors, for an approximate incidence of 0.3%. The archival paraffin-embedded specimens from 63 ampulla of Vater cancers after pancreaticoduodenectomy between 1965 and 1991 were analyzed by flow cytometry. Of the 63 cancers, 31 (49.2%) were diploid DNA cancers and 32 (50.8%) were aneuploid. Patients with diploid DNA cancer had a median survival time of 159.0 months, and patients with aneuploid DNA cancer had 24.0 months. This difference is statistically significant (P = 0.0257). A transient induction of S phase DNA synthesis is a common feature of non-genotoxic rodent hepatocarcinogens when administered in vivo. Flow cytometric cell cycle analysis was recorded in gastric biopsy specimens from patients with normal gastric mucosa (GM), superficial gastritis (SG) and chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). Cell-cycle analysis showed significantly higher percentages of cells in S- and S+G2/M-phase in CAG than in SG and normal GM (P < 0.0001). Moreover, CAG with severe or moderate atrophy showed significantly higher percentages of cells in S-phase (P < 0.05) and S+G2/M-phase (P < 0.02) than CAG with mild atrophy in antrum. In fundus, even if this increase was observed, it did not reach statistical significance.

We prospectively studied trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (T/S) in inducing remission in 'initial phase' Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), and in sustaining remission in generalized WG, in 72 patients in various disease stages. DNA distribution patterns were flow cytometrically recorded in gastric biopsy specimens from patients with chronic gastritis (CG) and chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). DNA aneuploidy was found in 3 of 58 patients with CG and in 7 of 82 patients with CAG.
