Pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular tumor of unknown etiology, though multiple factors play a role in its onset, e.g., trauma, chronic irritation, drugs etc., It is commonly seen in children and adolescents. Giant pyogenic granuloma is its atypical variant. We are presenting two cases of giant pyogenic granuloma, one, in a 28-year-old adult, presenting as a giant fluffy swelling of scalp and the other in a 11-year-old child, presenting as a giant ulcerated globular swelling of the scalp.

CME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: 1.Identify the clinical features of aplasia cutis congenita (ACC).2.Understand the differential diagnosis of ACC.3.Recognize features of concern for underlying associations of ACC. A 6-week-old girl presented to the dermatology clinic for evaluation of a scalp lesion. She was born full-term by vaginal delivery to a 27-year-old healthy mother with normal prenatal labs. The delivery was complicated by prolonged rupture of membranes and a scalp electrode was placed at hour 20 of labor. Forceps or other instrumentation were not used during delivery. In the general care …

Chondroid syringoma represents the cutaneous counterpart of mixed tumor (pleomorphic adenoma) of salivary glands, therefore it is also terme … neck. We present here a case report of histopathologically proven malignant chondroid syringoma of scalp in occipital region, with dural invasion. Malignant chondroid syringomas clinically appear as very large nodules and they metastasize at a very high rate. The treatment of these malignancies is surgical excision.

Apocrine skin carcinoma is an aggressive cutaneous tumour. We report a case of apocrine carcinoma developing in a naevus sebaceous of scalp in a 45 years old male. Malignant transformation of Naevus sebaceous is a rare complication usually found in elderly patients. Most of these tumours are basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. Only few cases of apocrine carcinoma on naevus sebaceous have been previously reported. This report highlights the potential of naevus sebaceous for malignant transformation.

Hair loss in children can have psychologic effects that interfere with a child's growth and development. In our case series, we evaluated 1003 children aged 0 months to 17 years who presented to the pediatric and dermatology outpatient clinics at Fatih University, Ankara, Turkey, from December 2009 through October 2010. The patients were routinely examined for scalp disorders and hair loss. We documented 69 patients with scalp disorders and hair loss, most commonly seborrheic dermatitis (SD), transient neonatal hair loss (TNHL), alopecia areata (AA), temporal triangular alopecia (TTA), and pit…

It has been known for decades that suppression of spontaneous scalp electroencephalographic activity occurs during ischaemia. Trend analysis for such suppression was found useful for intraoperative monitoring during carotid endarterectomy, or as a screening tool to detect delayed cerebral ischaemia after aneurismal subarachnoid haemorrhage. Nevertheless, pathogenesis of such suppression of activity has remained unclear. In five patients with aneurismal subarachnoid haemorrhage and four patients with decompressive hemicraniectomy after malignant hemispheric stroke due to middle cerebral artery …

Fetal scalp cysts are rare, and they may be easily misdiagnosed as meningoceles or encephaloceles. A 38-year-old pregnant woman was referred to our hospital for ultrasound examination, which revealed a small cyst above the skull with no defect in the skull. The cyst could not be seen on follow-up ultrasound examinations. After delivery, a three-dimensional CT scan of the head revealed no defect in skull and scalp. Fetal scalp cysts usually require surgical excision after birth, but can regress without any treatment.

Tissue expansion is in widespread use for the reconstruction of congenital and acquired defects. Complications of tissue expansion are well documented, the most common being infection or extrusion of the expander. Although the complications associated with scalp tissue expansion are similar to those experienced elsewhere in the body, site-specific complications can occur. These include bone thinning and erosion of the cranial vault. In this study, we report an unusual case of multiple osteophyte formation beneath a scalp tissue expander, resulting in its rupture and necessitating removal.

Steatocystoma multiplex (SM) is an uncommon disorder of the pilosebaceous unit characterized by the development of numerous sebum-containing dermal cysts which rarely involves the scalp. Here, we report a case of a 50-year-old man with multiple cystic nodules and alopecic patches on his scalp. On histopathological examination, the folded cyst was found to be lined by stratified squamous epithelium, while flattened sebaceous gland cells were identified in the cystic wall. Pigment casts were present in the hair papillae and perifollicular regions, suggesting trichotillomania as a possible cause …

Vascular lesions are uncommon in children with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) but can cause serious complications. We report on a child with NF1 who presented at 18 months of age with symptomatic stenosis of the left middle cerebral artery and its branches, and associated moyamoya disease. She also had bilateral posterior embryotoxon, left corneal opacity (Peters anomaly), and cutis aplasia of the left scalp. All of these defects may have occurred as a result of disruption of the blood supply caused by NF1 vasculopathy prenatally. This constellation of vascular anomalies has not been previously rep…

Although dermoscopy is used mainly for diagnosing pigmented skin lesions, this device has been reported to be useful in observing alopecia areata and frontal fibrosing alopecia. Herein, we investigated the dermoscopic features and their incidence of androgenetic alopecia (AGA; n = 50 men) and female AGA (FAGA; n = 10 women) in Asian people. More than 20% hair diameter diversity (HDD), which reportedly is an early sign of AGA and corresponds to hair follicle miniaturization, was observed in the affected area of all AGA and FAGA cases, suggesting that HDD is an essential feature to diagnose AGA

Alopecia of a scalp shows various shapes and extents of hair loss, from a small round patch to polymorphous patches or total global alopecia. But alopecia of a linear shape is very rare. Only a few such cases have currently been reported in the medical literature. We recently had the chance to observe and treat two cases of linear alopecia that developed on the occipital scalp. The lesions themselves were like alopecia areata that shows a smooth bald area without any abnormality except the hair loss, but histopathologically, the lesions were compatible with lupus erythematosus profundus.

PURPOSE: Leiomyosarcoma is a rare neoplasm. There is paucity of literature in regards to paraovarian leiomyosarcoma with metastases to the scalp. We present a 72-year-old woman with metastases to the scalp from a primary paraovarian high grade leiomyosarcoma.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The patient underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy, pelvic and aortic lymphadenectomy, excision of Meckel's diverticulum, and radical pelvic tumor debulking with sigmoid colectomy and end-to-end anastomosis and six cycles of taxotere/carboplatin. She presented 18 months later with metastatic high-grade leiomyosarco…

Dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS) is a suppurative, neutrophillic dermatosis. Therapies typically provide short-term improvement and include antibiotics, prednisone, and isotretinoin, as well as radiation, surgical excision, and laser ablation. The authors report the use of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker, adalimumab, to successfully treat a 39-year-old male with a long-standing history of DCS.
