This article discusses the psychological effect of acne vulgaris. It is shown that acne has significant effect on self-image and impacts quality of life. The impact of acne may be equivalent to that of asthma or epilepsy. Anxiety and depression and a reduction in social functioning are a consequence of this condition. Effective treatment results in improvement of quality-of-life measurement. Most of the data is gathered from case control studies. Further work, particularly prospective longitudinal cohort studies, needs to be performed to validate the impact of acne on quality of life. Acne sev

In two experiments, the use of a self-other Implicit Association Test (IAT) as a measure of implicit self-esteem was examined. In Study 1, participants completed two self-other IATs: one in which the other was unspecified and one in which the other was specified to be a close friend. Esteem-IAT scores were significantly higher for the unspecified other-IAT (d = .82), indicating that the content of the other has a considerable influence on the over-all esteem-IAT scores. Study 2 provided a conceptual replication of these results and provided some initial evidence that the valence of an unspecif

This article examines moral identity and reactions to out-groups during intergroup conflict Four studies suggest that a highly self-important moral identity is associated with an expansive circle of moral regard toward out-group members (Study 1) and more favorable attitudes toward relief efforts to aid out-group members (Study 2). Study 3 examines moral identity and national identity influences on the provision of financial assistance to out-groups. Study 4 investigates the relationship between moral identity and (a) the willingness to harm innocent out-group members not involved in the confl

This study examined the relationship between a diminished sense of self-existence and self-reported aggression among Japanese undergraduate students. Based on the previous scales, 81 items were developed to measure the diminished sense of self-existence and were assumed to represent three dimensions: self, others, and time. 286 undergraduate students rated themselves on the Diminished Sense of Self-existence Scale and the 1992 Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire. Analysis indicated that men and women had low scores on Verbal Aggression and high scores on Hostility with the diminished sense of

Although the Pan American Health Organization declared in 1995 that polio had been eliminated in the Western Hemisphere, life-altering effects of the disease continue for many survivors. It is known as Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS). The sheer number of individuals experiencing the symptoms has attracted the attention of the medical community. These physical symptoms are severe enough to change the quality of life and require lifestyle changes for people with PPS to cope with the disease. The psychological implications for individuals who must face the reemergence of a disease they thought they had

Distinct defensive processes are activated by conscious and nonconscious but accessible thoughts of death. Proximal defenses, which entail suppressing death-related thoughts or pushing the problem of death into the distant future by denying one's vulnerability, are rational, threat-focused, and activated when thoughts of death are in current focal attention. Distal terror management defenses, which entail maintaining self-esteem and faith in one's cultural worldview, function to control the potential for anxiety that results from knowing that death is inevitable. These defenses are experientia

Two studies examined the continuum and discontinuity models of the relation between dieting and bulimia nervosa. In Study 1, 21 dieters, 19 bulimics, and 33 nondieting controls were compared on 24 measures. Multivariate analyses revealed that each of the groups differed significantly from the other two. Univariate analyses found 18 significant differences between bulimics and dieters and 1 significant difference between dieters and controls. In Study 2, 86 subjects completed measures of psychological functioning, dieting, and bulimia nervosa. On the basis of regression analyses using factor sc

Low self-esteem occurs commonly in patients with an eating disorder, a term which includes patients with both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. In this hypothesis it is proposed that chronic low self-esteem is a necessary prerequisite to the development of an eating disorder, and that chronic low self-esteem is the final common pathway through which the multiple aetiological factors involved in the causation of eating disorders act. Thus, eating disorders can best be viewed as a 'symptom' of chronic low self-esteem. This hypothesis is able to account for the recent increase in the incidenc

Different types of self-discrepancies are associated with different negative affects. Two studies were conducted to determine whether automatic activation of specific actual-self: self-guide mismatches, as cognitive structures, would induce distinct emotional states. Subjects possessing significant discrepancies between their actual self and either their ideal self-guide (attributes that someone wishes or hopes the person would possess) or their ought self-guide (attributes that someone believes the person has the duty or obligation to possess) responded verbally to an audiotape while "thinkin

The past decade has witnessed increased clinical and investigative attention directed to the mental health of active-duty firefighters. Yet, to our knowledge, no investigations have focused on the well-being of retired firefighters, despite awareness of retirement posing significant challenges for many older adults in general, and, in particular, first responders. The purpose of this study was to (a) conduct an initial assessment of psychological functioning in 315 retired firefighters, (b) examine the relationship between overall psychological functioning and self-concept clarity (i.e., the e

This mixed methods study examined factors influencing assistive technology (AT) use among students with Learning Disabilities (LDs) in grades 7-10 (N=79) by comparing the perspectives of students who used AT daily (n=48) and less frequent users (n=31). Student perceptions were obtained using an online survey measuring potential individual characteristics that would influence AT use (AT and LD stigma, academic self-concept, perceived impact of AT) and environmental facilitators or barriers (AT teacher support). Chi-square tests revealed significant associations between AT use frequency and AT t

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effectiveness of Maze Out, a serious game (SG) codesigned by patients with eating disorders (ED) and clinicians as an adjunct to treatment as usual (TAU) for improving self-efficacy, self-image, and engagement in individuals with ED. Effects on ineffectiveness, insecurity, and personal recovery were also examined.
METHOD: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted at 11 centers in Denmark between July 2022 and December 2023. A total of 133 adult participants (≥ 18 years) with a registered ICD-10 ED diagnosis were randomized (1:1) to receive Maze Out

Co-rumination, the tendency to dwell on negative events and feelings with a relationship partner, is an aspect of relationships that has been associated with socioemotional adjustment tradeoffs and is found to be associated with depressive symptoms. However, depending on the context in which it occurs, co-rumination is not necessarily associated with detriments to mental well-being. Differences in relationship quality within certain relationships may explain why co-rumination is not always associated with depressive symptoms. In the current study, we utilized self-report measures in an ethnica

AIMS: To assess the possible importance of patients' perceptions of possible future selves in determining self-esteem and mood.
METHODS: One hundred and two patients of an early intervention programme for psychotic disorders completed measures of perceived positive and negative current and possible future selves, as well as indices of self-esteem and mood.
RESULTS: Measures of current and possible selves generally showed bivariate correlations with self-esteem, depression and anger/hostility. Perceived negative possible self was the most important independent predictor of self-esteem, depres
