Enteroendocrine Regulation of Nutrient Absorption.

Enteroendocrine cells (EECs) in the intestine regulate many aspects of whole-body physiology and metabolism. EECs sense luminal and circulating nutrients and respond by secreting hormones that act on multiple organs and organ systems, such as the brain, gallbladder, and pancreas, to control satiety, digestion, and glucose homeostasis. In addition, EECs act locally, on enteric neurons, endothelial cells, and the gastrointestinal epithelium, to facilitate digestion and absorption of nutrients. Many recent reports raise the possibility that EECs and the enteric nervous system may coordinate to re

The fibrotic scar in neurological disorders.

Tissue fibrosis, or scar formation, is a common response to damage in most organs of the body. The central nervous system (CNS) is special in that fibrogenic cells are restricted to vascular and meningeal niches. However, disruption of the blood-brain barrier and inflammation can unleash stromal cells and trigger scar formation. Astroglia segregate from the inflammatory lesion core, and the so-called "glial scar" composed of hypertrophic astrocytes seals off the intact neural tissue from damage. In the lesion core, a second type of "fibrotic scar" develops, which is sensitive to inflammatory m

Vestibular autonomic regulation (including motion sickness and the mechanism of vomiting).

Autonomic manifestations of vestibular dysfunction and motion sickness are well established in the clinical literature. Recent studies of 'vestibular autonomic regulation' have focused predominantly on autonomic responses to stimulation of the vestibular sense organs in the inner ear. These studies have shown that autonomic responses to vestibular stimulation are regionally selective and have defined a 'vestibulosympathetic reflex' in animal experiments. Outside the realm of experimental preparations, however, the importance of vestibular inputs in autonomic regulation is unclear because contr…

[Hypertension-induced organ damage].

Until now, an occasional blood pressure of below 140 mmHg systolic and less than 90 mmHg diastolic at rest has been regarded as normal. However, the most recent recommendations set the range for normotension lower: below 130/85 mmHg. Therapeutic targets will have to be adjusted accordingly. Raised diastolic and/or systolic blood pressure accelerates the process of arteriosclerosis and causes baromechanical effects. These result in disturbances of organ perfusion (brain, heart, kidney, peripheral organs) and left ventricular hypertrophy, cardiac failure, haemorrhagic insult and hypertensive enc

[Tension chylothorax following left-sided lung surgery].

This is a report on 3 patients who presented with chylothoraces (chylopleurae) with haemodynamic effect subsequent to left-side lung surgery. This complication occurred twice after pneumonectomy and once after atypical resection with extirpation of a mediastinal lymph node. Clinical signs and symptoms appeared with all the patients between the 5th and 8th postoperative day, as a result of the haemodynamic effect of the chylothorax in the sense of volume loss combined with heart tamponade. In one patient there was additionally the pattern of signs and symptoms of an acute abdomen, which could b

Complexities in cardiovascular rhythmicity: perspectives on circadian normality, ageing and disease.

Biological rhythms exist in organisms at all levels of complexity, in most organs and at myriad time scales. Our own biological rhythms are driven by energy emitted by the sun, interacting via our retinas with brain stem centres, which then send out complex messages designed to synchronize the behaviour of peripheral non-light sensing organs, to ensure optimal physiological responsiveness and performance of the organism based on the time of day. Peripheral organs themselves have autonomous rhythmic behaviours that can act independently from central nervous system control but is entrainable. Dy

N-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots-Decorated V2O5 Nanosheet for Fluorescence Turn Off-On Detection of Cysteine.

The development of a fast-response sensing technique for detection of cysteine can provide an analytical platform for prescreening of disease. Herein, we have developed a fluorescence turn off-on fluorescence sensing platform by combining nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) with V2O5 nanosheets for the sensitive and selective detection of cysteine in human serum samples. V2O5 nanosheets with 2-4 layers are successfully synthesized via a simple and scalable liquid exfoliation method and then deposited with 2-8 nm of N-GQDs as the fluorescence turn off-on nanoprobe for effective detect

[THE GUT FEELING OF THE EYES: GUT-EYE AXIS].

In intestinal diseases there are ophthalmological abnormalities. In celiac disease, for example, the eyes' pathologies are expressed by motoric, neurological, inflammatory, autoimmune, vision sharpness, dryness, redness, conjunctivitis and cataract tendency etc. It appears that intestinal luminal components and processes can irradiate to peripheral organs, including to the eyes, inducing functional abnormalities in this target organ. The present review describes the luminal and mucosal constituents and processes, the sensing mechanisms of those generated signals and the routes to deliver those

Evidence for College Students' Decreasing Sense of Belonging over Time: Direct and Moderated Results.

College students' sense of belonging with their institution has been established as an important factor that improves their health and well-being. However, the extent to which students' sense of belonging changes over their college experience-if at all-needs further examination. The current study employs a longitudinal design utilizing data repeatedly collected from the same students (N = 355; male 33.0% and female 67.0%; White 83.2%; baseline age range: 18-21 years) to examine changes in their sense of belonging over time. We also examined the extent to which different participant characteris

Photoactivated conductive MOF thin film arrays on micro-LEDs for chemiresistive gas sensing.

Electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs) are emerging as promising chemiresistors due to their diverse compositions, chemical properties, porosity, and room-temperature conductivity, enabling the design of energy-efficient devices. However, limited activation in this regime hinders sensitivity and reversibility. In this study, cMOF thin films are integrated onto a micro-LED (μLED) platform using a layer-by-layer method, enabling photoactivated gas sensing even at room-temperature. The systematic coating allows for precise tailoring of films (e.g., thickness and overlayer struct

Mitochondrial acute oxygen sensing and signaling.

Oxygen (O2) is essential for life and therefore the supply of sufficient O2 to the tissues is a major physiological challenge. In mammals, a deficit of O2 (hypoxia) triggers rapid cardiorespiratory reflexes (e.g. hyperventilation and increased heart output) that within a few seconds increase the uptake of O2 by the lungs and its distribution throughout the body. The prototypical acute O2-sensing organ is the carotid body (CB), which contains sensory glomus cells expressing O2-regulated ion channels. In response to hypoxia, glomus cells depolarize and release transmitters which activate afferen

Protein kinase G-regulated production of H2S governs oxygen sensing.

Reflexes initiated by the carotid body, the principal O2-sensing organ, are critical for maintaining cardiorespiratory homeostasis during hypoxia. O2 sensing by the carotid body requires carbon monoxide (CO) generation by heme oxygenase-2 (HO-2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) synthesis by cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE). We report that O2 stimulated the generation of CO, but not that of H2S, and required two cysteine residues in the heme regulatory motif (Cys(265) and Cys(282)) of HO-2. CO stimulated protein kinase G (PKG)-dependent phosphorylation of Ser(377) of CSE, inhibiting the production of H2S.

A novel microfluidic impedance assay for monitoring endothelin-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy.

Cardiac hypertrophy is an established and independent risk factor for the development of heart failure and sudden cardiac death. At the level of individual cardiac myocytes (heart muscle cells), the cell morphology alters (increase in cell size and myofibrillar re-organization) and protein synthesis is activated. In this paper, a novel cardiomyocyte-based impedance sensing system with the assistance of dielectrophoresis cell concentration is reported to monitor the dynamic process of endothelin-1-induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. A dielectrophoresis (DEP) microfluidic device is fabricated cap

Amine/hydrazone functionalized Cd(II)/Zn(II) metal-organic framework for ultrafast sensitive detection of hazardous 2,4,6-trinitrophenol in water.

Amine/hydrazone functionalized dual ligand Cd(II)/Zn(II) based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) denoted as CdMOF- and ZnMOF-NH2, respectively were synthesized via a simple conventional high-yield reflux method using low-cost and readily available starting materials, i.e., a Schiff base linker, 4-pyridylcarboxaldehydeisonicotinoylhydrazone (L1) and 2-aminoterephthalic acid (H2ata) linker. Crystallographic and thermogravimetric studies confirmed the formation of MOFs with good crystallinity and thermal stability. Photoluminescence studies point out that both MOFs can be used efficiently for fast

Host Nitric Oxide Disrupts Microbial Cell-to-Cell Communication to Inhibit Staphylococcal Virulence.

Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal bacterium that can asymptomatically colonize its host but also causes invasive infections. Quorum sensing regulates S. aureus virulence and the transition from a commensal to a pathogenic organism. However, little is known about how host innate immunity affects interbacterial communication. We show that nitric oxide suppresses staphylococcal virulence by targeting the Agr quorum sensing system. Nitric oxide-mediated inhibition occurs through direct modification of cysteine residues C55, C123, and C199 of the AgrA transcription factor. Cysteine modification

Detection of Trimethylamine Based on a Manganese Tetraphenylporphyrin Optical Waveguide Sensing Element.

The sensitive detection of trimethylamine has been accomplished by using a homogeneous optical waveguide sensor system. Also the sensor can be easily fabricated by using tetraphenylporphyrin manganese (MnTPP) as sensitive materials to detect different volatile organic compounds (VOC). NMR (1H-NMR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) instrumental means were used to characterize its structure. Gas-sensing measurements indicated that the sensing element has shown good selectivity, high se

SENSE-L Framework: a multi-sensory pedagogical method for visually challenged learners in inclusive language and literature education.

This study presents the SENSE-L Framework, a multisensory systematic teaching approach to support visually challenged students in inclusive language and literature learning. The structure restructures the traditional visually-dependent teaching into a sequenced process which is based on auditory and tactile senses. It involves five sequential stages that are sensory input substitution, linguistic decomposition, sensory anchoring, guided interpretation and expressive output. The approach was confirmed by the qualitative and interview-based research with the learners and teachers, with the propo

Molecular mechanisms of olfactory processing in the mammalian olfactory epithelium.

In humans the sense of smell plays an important role in protecting the organism from external hazards like fire, gas or spoiled food, in the consumption of food and in chemical communication with one another. Increasingly, the study of human olfaction is relevant to a number of medical problems connected with olfactory dysfunction, i.e. neurodegenerative diseases which are also manifested in the olfactory epithelium. Although much is known about behavioral aspects and neuronal activities elicited by odorants, we still cannot clearly describe the molecular mechanisms by which odor stimuli are t

Multifunctional Vertical Bulk-Heterojunction Transistors With Amorphous GaOx for Neuromorphic Perception-to-Decision.

Multifunctional neuromorphic hardware has emerged as a promising paradigm to transcend the physical separation of sensing, memory, and computing inherent in traditional von Neumann architectures. The central challenge lies in developing integrated devices with high functional density for in-situ fusion of sensing, memory, and computing. Here, we propose a multifunctional vertical bulk-heterojunction transistor (MVBT) based on amorphous GaOx dielectric layer, integrating four functions within a single device: deep-ultraviolet (DUV) photodetection, threshold neuronal firing, broadband optoelectr
