The etiology of allergic-appearing foot dermatitis: a 5-year retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this 5-year retrospective investigation were threefold. (1) Among patients with dermatitis of the feet consistent with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), what were the final diagnoses of those with dermatitis only on the feet and those whose foot dermatitis was accompanied by other cutaneous involvement? (2) Among those patients determined to have ACD, what were the relevant allergens? (3) Have the allergens in shoes in the United States changed as a consequence of modifications in footwear manufacture and style design? METHODS: Of 704 patients patch-tested at th…

Inversion superiority in visual agnosia may be common to a variety of orientation polarised objects besides faces.

Selective impairment in recognition of faces (prosopagnosia) resulting from certain localized cortical lesions has been advanced as an argument for a face specific brain module. The argument is claimed to be strengthened by the discovery of an inversion superiority effect in the recognition of faces by a prosopagnosic patient (Farah et al., Vis Res 1995b;35:2089-2093). The present paper reports an inversion superiority effect in the recognition of faces and shoes in a visual agnosic patient. The finding raises the possibility that several classes of orientationally polarized objects, of which …

McKeever arthrodesis for the painful hallux.

Three hundred nine McKeever arthrodeses for treatment of the painful hallux were performed on 234 patients at the Mayo Clinic from 1955 to 1980. Two hundred six cases were contacted, and 71 were personally examined and X-rayed. The average follow-up was 15 years (1 to 28 years). Ninety-one percent wore shoes within 2 months, 92% are painless, and 98% without other foot pathology are wearing dress shoes of their choosing. Complications, which consisted of failed fixation, infection, and recurrence of deformity, occurred in 8%. The screw fixation was removed in 30%. Eighty-six percent of the pat…

Aerobic Dance Injuries: A Retrospective Study of Instructors and Participants.

In brief: In this study shoes, floor types, and individual physical differences were evaluated for their effects on aerobic dance injuries. The injury frequency was 75.9% for instructors and 43.3% for students. The shin was the most common site of injury in both groups. Overall, 60% of the injuries in the student group and 52% of injuries in the instructor group occurred below the knee. Most injuries were not debilitating, and few required medical treatment. The authors concluded that resilient but stable floor surfaces, proper shoes, and moderating the frequency of participation can prevent i…

Effects of curved carbon fiber plate bending stiffness on plantar pressure characteristics and performance during speed step in jump rope athletes.

This study aimed to (1) investigate the plantar pressure characteristics of the speed step technique and (2) evaluate the effects of curved carbon fiber plates with varying stiffness on plantar pressure distribution and performance. Twenty-six healthy competitive male jump rope athletes completed plantar pressure measurement protocols. Each participant performed at least three trials of speed step sprints under three shoe conditions: control shoe (control), shoe with moderately stiff curved carbon plates (stiff), and shoe with highly stiff curved carbon plates (stiffest). Plantar pressure data

Sex and Isolated Anthropometric Measures Do Not Explain Individual Differences in Responsiveness to Advanced Footwear Technology in Highly Trained Runners.

Advanced footwear technology (AFT) has improved running economy in distance runners, yet individual responsiveness varies widely. Sex differ … eted treadmill running economy tests at 60%, 70%, and 80% of their VO2peak speed in AFT and non-AFT shoes. Anthropometric measures investigated were height, body mass, foot length, femur and tibia length, and Achilles tendon length. Females showed significantly lower absolute EC than males across all speeds and shoe conditions (p < 0.05), but ΔEC did no …

Conservative Treatment for Metatarsus Adductus, A Systematic Review of Literature.

There are various treatment approaches for the subjects with metatarsus adductus, including nonsurgical and surgical treatment. Nonsurgical treatments such as serial casting, modified shoes (Bebax shoe, Ipos antiadductus shoe) and orthoses (Wheaton brace, counter rotation system splint, Denis Brown bar, and Fillauer bar) are widely used in this regard. The main question posted here is which orthoses are more effective in correcting metatarsus adductus. Therefore, the aim of this review was to determine the efficiency of various nonsurgical treatments used for metatarsus adductus. MEDLINE/PubMe…

The Influence of Prolonged Running and Footwear on Lower Extremity Joint Stiffness.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to compare leg, sagittal plane knee and ankle, and frontal plane ankle stiffness over the course of a prolonged treadmill run in neutral and stability footwear. METHODS: Thirteen male habitual rearfoot runners completed two biomechanical testing sessions in which they ran for 21 min at their preferred running speed in a neutral shoe, then changed either into the same neutral shoe or a stability shoe and ran a further 21 min on a force-instrumented treadmill. Three-dimensional kinematics and kinetics were recorded at the beginning and end of each 21-

The effect of prefabricated and proprioceptive foot orthoses on plantar pressure distribution in patients with flexible flatfoot during walking.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that orthoses with different constructions could alter gait parameters in flexible flatfoot. However, there is less evidence about the effect of insoles with proprioceptive mechanism on plantar pressure distribution in flatfoot. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of orthoses with different mechanisms on plantar pressure distribution in subjects with flexible flatfoot. STUDY DESIGN: Quasi-experimental. METHODS: In total, 12 flatfoot subjects were recruited for this study. In-shoe plantar pressure in walking was measured by Pedar-X system under three

Postoperative rehabilitation after percutaneous Achilles tendon repair: early functional therapy versus cast immobilization.

PURPOSE: To report a comparative study on postoperative management following percutaneous repair of acute Achilles tendon ruptures. METHODS: One hundred and three patients with percutaneous repair after acute Achilles tendon rupture were prospectively entered in our departmental database. Before July 1999, 15 patients were treated postoperatively with below-knee cast immobilization; after July 1999, patients underwent early functional therapy using a special shoe. Patients were seen at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 12 months after surgery. Matched pairs were selected based upon gender, age, weight,

Determinants of Podoconiosis in Bensa District, Sidama Region, Ethiopia: A case control study.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is one of the neglected tropical diseases (NTD) with the greatest potential for elimination. Despite its public health importance, podoconiosis is a poorly understood disease which led to a widespread misconception about its cause, prevention, and treatment. Even though the exact global burden is still to be measured, it is estimated that at least 4 million people are affected with podoconiosis worldwide, of which more than 1.5 million people are in Ethiopia. The objective of this study was to identify the determinants of podoconiosis in Bensa District, Sidama Regional

Self-reported adult footwear and the risks of lower limb osteoarthritis: the GOAL case control study.

BACKGROUND: Biomechanical factors may play a role in osteoarthritis (OA) development and progression. Previous biomechanical studies have indicated that types of footwear may modulate forces across the knee joint, and high heeled womens' shoes in particular are hypothesised to be detrimental to lower limb joint health. This analysis of data from a case control study investigated persistent users of different adult footwear for risks of knee and hip OA. Our underlying hypotheses were that high heeled, narrow heeled, and hard soled shoe types were putative risk factors for lower limb OA. METHOD…

Footwear and Elevated Heel Influence on Barbell Back Squat: A Review.

The back squat is one of the most effective exercises in strengthening the muscles of the lower extremity. Understanding the impact of footw … es demonstrated that the choice of footwear directly impacts kinematics and kinetics. Weightlifting shoes were shown to decrease trunk lean and generate more plantarflexion relative to running shoes and barefoot lifting. Elevating the heel through the use of external squat wedges is popular method during rehabilitation and was shown to provide similar e …

Creative prosthetic foot selection enables successful ambulation in stiletto high heels.

BACKGROUND: Walking in high heels presents biomechanical challenges, yet they remain part of many women's attire. However, women with a lower limb amputation are limited in available footwear options. Case description and methods: This case study is in response to one patient's assertion that she walked better and more symmetrically in heels than flat shoes with her below-knee prosthesis. She underwent gait analysis in athletic shoes and 10-cm stiletto high heels worn with a pediatric running foot to determine if these claims could be substantiated through biomechanical measures. Global gait a…

Impairment in people with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in adjusting ground reaction force in running.

In healthy individuals, maximum vertical ground reaction force (MVGRF) remains close to constant during constant velocity running, despite variation in stiffness of the surface underfoot. Because the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) possesses mechanoreceptors that influence recruitment of knee muscles, it may play a role in regulation of lower limb force output. This study was designed to examine the effect of recent ACL reconstruction on MVGRF in running. Seven patients who were 5-13 weeks post-ACL reconstruction and 7 healthy participants ran for 60 seconds in shoes modified with hard and wi…

Treatment of paraphilic sexual disorder: the use of topiramate in fetishism.

Topiramate, a newer anticonvulsant, has a modulating effect on voltage-dependent sodium and calcium ion channels, potentiates GABA neurotransmitters and blocks kainite/AMPA glutamate receptors. We describe the use of topiramate in the treatment of fetishism, a paraphilic sexual disorder. A 23-year-old male had developed sexual fantasies and urges towards women's feet and shoes from childhood onwards. The patient would masturbate with women's shoes, which he had bought or stolen from others. He would feel sexually excited by seeing and/or smelling female feet and shoes. He had received individu…

The foot in chronic rheumatoid arthritis.

The feet of 200 consecutive admissions with classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis were studied. 104 were found to have pain or deformity. Clinical involvement of the joints was seen more often than radiological joint damage in the ankle, but the reverse was the case in the midtarsal joints. The metatarsophalangeal joints were involved most frequently both clinically and radiologically. Sixty per cent of the patients required modified shoes but only a third of these had received them. The need for more shoes is clear, and although this is a highly selected group of patients they were all u…

Barbell squats in CrossFit athletes: the effects of load and footwear type on trunk flexion and lower limb joints torques at the peak of total support torque.

We examined the effects of barbell load and footwear type on hip, knee, and ankle joint torques during barbell squats in CrossFit athletes. Sixteen participants performed squats at 50%, 70%, and 90% of their 3-repetition maximum, wearing either weightlifting shoes or conventional footwear. Kinematic and kinetic data were captured using a three-dimensional analysis system, enabling the calculation of joint torques and trunk flexion angles at the instant of peak total support torque. Peak total support torque increased with load in both footwear conditions, with no interactions between footwear …

Arch-pad design and insole material jointly influence regional plantar loading and perceived comfort during walking in women's occupational footwear.

This study examined immediate effects of insole material and arch-pad design on perceived comfort and in-shoe plantar pressure in women's occupational shoes. Sixteen healthy young women completed nine randomised within-subject conditions (polyurethane, open-cell foams or silicone × no pad, arch-pad 1 or arch-pad 2) during level walking in standardised 35-mm heel shoes. Plantar pressure (contact area, peak pressure and pressure-time integral) was measured with an in-shoe pressure system, and comfort was rated using a footwear comfort scale. Arch-pad conditions increased medial-midfoot contact a…
