Five rodent and two insectivore species were investigated for Cryptosporidium at seven sites in north-eastern Spain. Of the 442 animals studied, 82 Apodemus sylvaticus, 1 A. flavicollis, 5 Mus spretus, 1 Rattus rattus, 8 Clethrionomys glareolus and 13 Crocidura russula were infected with only C. parvum. Eleven A. sylvaticus and 2 C. glareolus were infected with only C. muris and 16 A. sylvaticus, 1 M. spretus and 2 C. glareolus showed mixed infections. Both cryptosporidial species were found in most study areas. No causal relationship was found between intrinsic host factors (age and sex) and

During a study of an experimental population of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and its transmission of bovine theileriosis to cattle, some supplementary information was obtained on the role of rodents and the small carnivores in the development and maintenance of R. appendiculatus populations. Observations were also made on other common tick species found on these hosts. A total of 530 individual hosts were examined during the 4-yr period, of which the majority included, among the carnivores, the white-tailed mongoose (Ichneumia albicauda), the large spotted genet (Genetta tigrina) and the zoril

Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning was shown by Dack et al. in 1930 to be caused by staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) produced by S. aureus, rather than by the bacterial infection. However, the emetic mechanism of SE has remained unclear. In this study, we analyzed the emetic activity of SE in several emetic animal models and tried to elucidate the mechanism of emesis. We established a small primate, common marmoset, as a novel emetic model for SE. We also analyzed the immunofluorescence analysis of the gastrointestinal tract of the common marmoset and found that SE binds to submucosal mast ce

Chronic testicular pain remains an important challenge for urologists. Investigation of the innervation of male gonads thus becomes essential for deepening our understanding of their regulatory roles in male reproductive physiology and pathophysiology. Studies of testicular innervation are mainly limited to the intratesticular peptidergic nerves of the testis by immunohistochemical and acetylcholinesterase histochemical investigations in some animals. Little is known about the detailed, overall distribution in general experimental animal testis. In this study, the distribution of nerves supply

Leptospirosis is the major infectious disease on Reunion Island but little is known about the animal reservoir. We conducted a wide-ranging survey that included samples from 574 animals belonging to 12 species. The seroprevalence and prevalence of renal carriage varied greatly depending on the species, with the highest seroprevalence (79·5%) found in Norway rats, and the lowest (13·2%) in tenrecs. The renal carriage rate ranged from 84·6% in mice to 0% in tenrecs. Our results suggest that rodents are the most important reservoirs of leptospirosis on Reunion Island. The epidemiological role tha

The antiemetic effects of six serotonergic 5-HT1A-receptor agonists, 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetrarin (8-OH-DPAT), 4-(4-[4-(2-pyrimidinyl)piperazin-1-yl]butyl)-2,3,4,5- tetrahydro-1,4-benzoxazepine-3,5-dione (SUN8399), buspirone, gepirone, ipsapirone and tandospirone, against motion sickness were investigated in Suncus murinus. Subcutaneous injection of all six agonists completely and dose-dependently suppressed motion-induced emesis. Pretreatment with 8-OH-DPAT or SUN8399 dose-dependently inhibited emesis elicited by nicotine (4.0 mg/kg, s.c.), veratrine (0.7 mg/kg, s.c.), cisplatin (20

1. Following our earlier observations that the tachykinin NK1 receptor antagonist CP-99,994 is an effective anti-emetic in ferrets, we have examined the anti-emetic effects of a more potent and novel NK1 receptor antagonist, GR203040, against various emetic stimuli in the ferret, dog and house musk shrew (Suncus murinus). 2. In ferrets, GR203040 (0.1 mg kg-1 s.c. or i.v.) is effective against emesis induced by radiation, cisplatin, cyclophosphamide, copper sulphate, ipecacuanha or morphine. 3. In animals in which emesis had been established with cisplatin, GR203040 (1 mg kg-1 s.c.) was fully e

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is a vector-borne zoonotic disease caused by spirochete bacteria of the genus Borrelia. It is primarily transmitted by ticks of the genus Ixodes. Vertebrate hosts, including rodents and insectivores such as shrews and moles, maintain the pathogens in ecosystems. Research on the prevalence and geographical distribution of Borrelia species and other micromammal-associated zoonotic pathogens in the Republic of Korea (ROK) is scarce. This study investigated the prevalence and distribution of Borrelia spp. in wild micromammals across the ROK to support Lyme disease control.…

In contrast, red light has been observed to have a protective effect against myopia in tree shrews and rhesus monkeys. Apart from wavelength, flicker status also showed inconsistent effects on ocular growth, which could be attributed to differences in ocular refractive status, evolutionary disparities in retinal cone cells across species, and the …

Ghrelin and its mimetics have been shown to reduce cisplatin-induced emesis in preclinical studies using ferrets and shrews. This study investigated the effectiveness of ghrelin and des-acyl ghrelin (DAG) in antagonizing cisplatin-induced emesis and physiological changes indicative of nausea in Suncus murinus. Animals implanted with radiotelemetry devices were administered ghrelin (0.2, 1.0, and 5.0 μg/day), DAG (0.2, 1.0, and 5.0 μg/day), or saline (14 μL/day) intracerebroventricularly 4 days before and 3 days after treatment with cisplatin (30 mg/kg). At the end, the anti-apoptotic potential…

Rabies is one of the most significant public and veterinary health problems, causing approximately 59,000 human deaths annually in the developing countries of Asia and Africa. The aetiologic agent, a viral species of the Lyssavirus genus, is highly neurotropic and has a wide host range, including terrestrial mammals and several Chiropteran species. The Lyssavirus mokola (MOKV) was first isolated in the late 1960s from organ pools of shrews (Crocidura flavescens manni) in the Mokola forest (Nigeria). To date, at least 30 MOKV isolations have been confirmed, all exclusively from Africa, with 73%…

Bartonella species are recognized globally as emerging zoonotic pathogens. Small mammals such as rodents and shrews are implicated as major natural reservoirs for these microbial agents. Nevertheless, in several tropical countries, like India, the diversity of Bartonella in small mammals remain unexplored and limited information exists on the natural transmission cycles (reservoirs and vectors) of these bacteria. Using a multi-locus sequencing approach, we investigated the prevalence, haplotype diversity, and phylogenetic affinities of Bartonella in small mammals and their associated mites in …

This protocol describes the modified hole board (mHB), which combines features from a traditional hole board and open field and is designed to measure multiple dimensions of unconditioned behavior in small laboratory mammals (e.g., mice, rats, tree shrews and small primates). This paradigm is a valuable alternative for the use of a behavioral test battery, since a broad behavioral spectrum of an animal's behavioral profile can be investigated in one single test. The apparatus consists of a box, representing the 'protected' area, separated from a group compartment. A board, on which small cylin…

OVERVIEW: Borna disease virus (BDV) has a broad host range, affecting primarily horses and sheep, but also cattle, ostriches, cats and dogs. In cats, BDV may cause a non-suppurative meningoencephalomyelitis ('staggering disease').
INFECTION: The mode of transmission is not completely elucidated. Direct and indirect virus transmission is postulated, but BDV is not readily transmitted between cats. Vectors such as ticks may play a role and shrews have been identified as a potential reservoir host. Access to forested areas has been reported to be an important risk factor for staggering disease.
