The golden jackal (Canis aureus): interaction of fur and fecal microbiota, host genetics and animal traits.

The golden jackal (Canis aureus) is a medium-sized canid widely distributed across Europe and the Mediterranean region. As a synanthropic sp … . This can be explained by the strong direct contact of the fur with the environment, maintaining a skin microbiome for a healthy skin, developing and regulating the immune system, thus override the genetic profile. Overall, our findings highlight the golden jackal’s adaptability as a synanthropic species and underscore the intricate relationships between host ge …

Ecology and Host Identity Outweigh Evolutionary History in Shaping the Bat Microbiome.

Recent studies of mammalian microbiomes have identified strong phylogenetic effects on bacterial community composition. Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) are among the most speciose mammals on the planet and the only mammal capable of true flight. We examined 1,236 16S rRNA amplicon libraries of the gut, oral, and skin microbiota from 497 Afrotropical bats (representing 9 families, 20 genera, and 31 species) to assess the extent to which host ecology and phylogeny predict microbial community similarity in bats. In contrast to recent studies of host-microbe associations in other mammals, we found no

Clinical and Mechanistic Evidence for Comano Thermal Water: A Narrative Review.

Comano thermal water (CTW) is a hypotonic, bicarbonate-calcium-magnesium mineral water traditionally used to manage chronic inflammatory and relapsing skin diseases. This review summarises and discusses the available clinical, experimental, and translational evidence on CTW, with a particular focus on dermatological indications. The physicochemical properties of CTW, along with the presence of a stable, non-pathogenic microbial community, are examined in relation to their potential biological activity. Clinical studies indicate that CTW-based balneotherapy, alone or in combination with narrowb

Whole lung tissue is the preferred sampling method for amplicon-based characterization of murine lung microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Low-biomass microbiome studies (such as those of the lungs, placenta, and skin) are vulnerable to contamination and sequencing stochasticity, which obscure legitimate microbial signal. While human lung microbiome studies have rigorously identified sampling strategies that reliably capture microbial signal from these low-biomass microbial communities, the optimal sampling strategy for characterizing murine lung microbiota has not been empirically determined. Performing accurate, reliable characterization of murine lung microbiota and distinguishing true microbial signal from noise i

Microbial dysbiosis and wound healing in diabetic foot ulcers: a mini review with a note on the role of artificial intelligence.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious diabetes-related complication characterized by high rates of amputation and mortality. Emerging evidence suggests that DFUs are not simply the result of infection, but also involve microbiome dysbiosis, which impairs healing. Systemically, disturbances to the gut microbiota via the gut-skin axis promote systemic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. Locally, skin microbial diversity is significantly reduced, allowing opportunistic pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa to form resilient biofilms. These biofilms resist anti

The microbiological signature of human cutaneous leishmaniasis lesions exhibits restricted bacterial diversity compared to healthy skin.

Localised cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) is the most common form of cutaneous leishmaniasis characterised by single or multiple painless chronic ulcers, which commonly presents with secondary bacterial infection. Previous culture-based studies have found staphylococci, streptococci, and opportunistic pathogenic bacteria in LCL lesions, but there have been no comparisons to normal skin. In addition, this approach has strong bias for determining bacterial composition. The present study tested the hypothesis that bacterial communities in LCL lesions differ from those found on healthy skin (HS). Us

Decoding the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of microbiota using pan-body pan-disease microbiomics.

The human microbiome emerges as a promising reservoir for diagnostic markers and therapeutics. Since host-associated microbiomes at various body sites differ and diseases do not occur in isolation, a comprehensive analysis strategy highlighting the full potential of microbiomes should include diverse specimen types and various diseases. To ensure robust data quality and comparability across specimen types and diseases, we employ standardized protocols to generate sequencing data from 1931 prospectively collected specimens, including from saliva, plaque, skin, throat, eye, and stool, with an av

Biogeography of the ecosystems of the healthy human body.

BACKGROUND: Characterizing the biogeography of the microbiome of healthy humans is essential for understanding microbial associated diseases. Previous studies mainly focused on a single body habitat from a limited set of subjects. Here, we analyzed one of the largest microbiome datasets to date and generated a biogeographical map that annotates the biodiversity, spatial relationships, and temporal stability of 22 habitats from 279 healthy humans. RESULTS: We identified 929 genera from more than 24 million 16S rRNA gene sequences of 22 habitats, and we provide a baseline of inter-subject varia

Psoriasis: Embarking a dynamic shift in the skin microbiota.

Recent interest has arisen regarding the role of microbiome and its composition in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Numerous studies have shown that there are alterations in skin flora arrangement between normal individuals and psoriatic patients. Psoriasis exacerbation could be interconnected with epidermal or mucosal colonization with streptococci, Malassezia, Staphylococcus aureus, or Candida albicans. The role of cutaneous and gut microbiome in psoriasis pathogenesis has recently been studied in both human and animal models. In this review, we try to evaluate various pathogenic mechanisms li

Efficacy of an adjuvant Lactobacillus rhamnosus formula in improving skin lesions as assessed by PASI in patients with plaque psoriasis from a university-affiliated, tertiary-referral hospital in São Paulo (Brazil): a parallel, double-blind, randomized clinical trial.

Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease of the skin, characterized by erythematous plaques. It is rather common, affecting 2-4% of the population in western countries. Psoriasis' etiology encompasses both genetic and environmental factors. Evidence suggests that the latter reflect the importance of changes in the microbiome for developing the disease. Thus, it is hypothesized that gut microbiome manipulation may arise as a way of treating psoriasis. However, few trials assessed the use of probiotics in psoriasis, although promising results were detected in small studies. Our objective was to asse

Partial normalization of microbiota dysbiosis in condyloma acuminatum patients following treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Condyloma acuminatum (CA) is the most common sexually transmitted disease and the presence of microbiota dysbiosis has been observed to promote the progress of the disease. However, the explicit characteristics of microbiota dysbiosis in CA patients have not been well elucidated yet. METHODS: We recruited 40 CA patients who received QYXJ (an in-hospital prescription that has been used to treat CA for many years) treatment and 40 healthy controls (HC) in the current study. Before and after two weeks QYXJ administration, the skin microbiome of each patient was assessed using 16S r…

Gut dysbiosis in a murine model of cutaneous lupus erythematosus correlates with antigen-specific T cells and antigen-presenting cells in skin.

The commensal organisms constituting the human microbiome are increasingly appreciated to fortify epithelial barriers and modulate host immunity. Dysbiosis of both single strains and communities can contribute to inflammatory conditions. Here, we sought to characterize potential dysbiosis in our inducible mouse model of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). We hypothesized that gut dysbiosis would occur based on several studies that found lower Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratios and decreased diversity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) cohorts compared to healthy counterparts, a mouse st

Axial Connectivity of the Lung Microbiome: A Review of Interorgan Crosstalk.

The classic organ-centric model of human physiology is rapidly giving way to a unified approach embracing the human body as an integrated network of bidirectional interorgan communication. The human microbiome serves as a fundamental mediator of this shift, regulating immune homeostasis, barrier integrity and metabolic signaling across organs. While the lung maintains a characteristic low-biomass microbiome in dynamic equilibrium, any disruption primes local and systemic immune responses contributing to disease. Beyond the well-described gut-lung axis, crosstalk between the lung and other dist

Exploring the Early-Life Microbiomes of Preterm Infants and Their Childhood Health Outcomes (The BLOOM Study): Protocol for a Prospective, Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Establishment of the gut microbiome during the first years of life is critically important for long-term health and development. In preterm infants, microbial colonization is disrupted due to their developmental immaturity and the myriad of pre- and postnatal exposures. Unfortunately, this places them at an elevated risk for adverse health outcomes into childhood (eg, asthma and impaired neurodevelopment). Understanding the developmental trajectory of the microbiome in preterm infants, the factors predicting these microbial patterns, and the links to childhood health can offer oppo

Genetic background and microbiome drive susceptibility to epicutaneous sensitization and food allergy in adjuvant-free mouse model.

BACKGROUND: The dual allergen exposure hypothesis states that sensitization to food antigens occurs through a damaged skin barrier in individuals with no previous oral tolerance to certain foods. However, the resulting allergic reaction could depend on factors such as the host's genetic predisposition as well as the skin and gut microbiota. METHODS: Specific-pathogen-free BALB/c and C57BL/6 and germ-free (GF) BALB/c mice were epicutaneously sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA) via dorsal tape-stripped skin and challenged with OVA by intragastric gavage. The development of food allergy (FA) symptom
