INTRODUCTION: We report the magnetic resonance imaging, angiographic, and immunohistochemical characteristics of a dural leiomyosarcoma in a patient infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

BACKGROUND: Hepatoblastoma is the most common primary hepatic malignancy of childhood, frequently presenting as advanced disease. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an endothelial mitogen and survival factor critical to growth and angiogenesis in many human cancers. Inhibition of VEGF effectively suppresses tumorigenesis in multiple experimental models. AIMS/METHODS: In the human liver, alpha-smooth muscle actin (ASMA) is present in smooth muscle of the vasculature, perisinusoidal cells (Ito cells), and myofibroblasts derived from perisinusoidal cells. A case of angiomyofibroblastoma of the vulva in a 53-year-old woman was examined by means of immunohistochemistry. Angioleiomyomas (ALMAs) are benign tumors that arise from smooth muscle cells that form the tunica media of vascular structures. To our knowledge, only five cases of ALMA of the external auditory canal (EAC) have been reported. We report the case of a 52-year-old man with left otalgia, otorrhea, auricular fullness, and hearing loss. On otomicroscopic examination, a reddish and smooth mass completely occluding the EAC was seen. Computed tomography scan showed a soft tissue mass with a complete opacification of the left EAC. Muscle coat specimens from human calices, renal pelvis, pelvi-ureteric junction, upper, middle and lower ureter segments were examined under an electron microscope. Granular cell tumors, uncommon soft tissue growths, predominantly manifest in the subcutaneous and tongue areas, while those in the gastrointestinal tract are scarce and develop slowly. Patients typically show no distinct clinical symptoms and are hard to differentiate from gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors, smooth muscle tumors, neural sheath tumors, and rhabdomyosarcomas using endoscopy. Cutaneous leiomyoma is an infrequently occurring benign tumor that arises from smooth muscle in the skin. Pilar leiomyoma, a subtype of cutaneous leiomyoma, arises from the arrector pili muscle associated with hair follicles. Pilar leiomyoma, particularly in the head and neck region, is rare and frequently misdiagnosed. We report one patient who developed pilar leiomyoma of the nasal dorsum, explore the differential diagnosis and review the characteristics of previously reported individuals with pilar leiomyoma of the nasal dorsum.
