Cardiac cycle modulates social pain.

Social pain is a painful feeling evoked by social rejection, exclusion, or the loss of other important people. Previous research suggests that physical pain is reduced by increased signals from baroreceptors that monitor blood pressure. This pre-registered study investigated whether social pain is attenuated by increased baroafferent signals, as observed in physical pain. Given that baroafferent signals increase during cardiac systole and decrease during diastole, we hypothesized that feelings of pain induced by social rejection would be lower when exclusion events are presented at the cardiac

Social Physiology: Human homeostasis is more efficient in social proximity.

Physiological homeostasis is traditionally viewed as an individual process optimized through evolution to minimize the energetic costs of regulation. However, it remains unknown whether social proximity enhances the efficiency of homeostatic regulation, including in systems not traditionally viewed as socially sensitive. Glucose metabolism is one such system. In a set of preregistered experiments, we found that glucose homeostasis following a carbohydrate challenge is more efficient in a Social condition than an Alone condition, exhibiting lower perturbation amplitude and faster recovery (n =

Pros and cons of sociality across ecological niches: a swarm robotics approach.

The evolution of language is closely linked to an increase in human sociality. But when is increased sociality an adaptive strategy? Swarm Robotics, which studies the collective behaviors of large populations of interacting robots with simple embodied cognition, is an ideal testbed for studying the environmental conditions that may favor the evolution of more social behaviors and cooperative language. Here, we introduce the notion of parametrizable sociality to classic swarm robotics models, and test the foraging and communication behaviors of robots with different degrees of sociality under d

Transmission of social anxiety from mother to infant: an experimental study using a social referencing paradigm.

In this experiment we investigated the impact of indirect expressions of maternal social anxiety on infant interactions with a stranger. A social referencing paradigm was used in which infants first observed their mothers interacting with a stranger and then interacted with the stranger themselves. Mothers made no direct communicative gestures to the infant concerning the stranger throughout the procedure. There were two experimental conditions experienced by all mother-infant pairs (N = 24; 12 boys)-non-anxious and socially anxious-and there were two male strangers. Infants were between 12 an

How place shapes diarrheal risk: An eco-social analysis of environmental and social infrastructures in riverine Indonesia.

Diarrheal disease remains strongly patterned by environmental and social inequalities in place-based riverine settings, where daily interaction with contaminated water environments shapes exposure risk. Guided by eco-social theory, this study examines how environmental and social infrastructures jointly structure diarrheal vulnerability in riverine communities of Jambi Province, Indonesia. A cross-sectional survey of 463 adult household heads was integrated with river water quality assessment and analyzed using a parsimonious structural equation model to estimate pathways linking social capita

Differential Effects of a Behavioral Treatment Probe on Social Gaze Behavior in Fragile X Syndrome and Non-Syndromic Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The purpose of this study was to examine potential differences in social learning between individuals with fragile X syndrome (FXS), the leading known inherited cause of intellectual disability, and individuals with non-syndromic autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Thirty school-aged males with FXS and 26 age and symptom-matched males with non-syndromic ASD, were administered a behavioral treatment probe designed to improve levels of social gaze during interactions with others. The treatment probe was administered by a trained behavior therapist over two days in our laboratory and included reinfor

Offering small tangible rewards within social casino games increases in-play bets but does not impact real-money gambling.

Many video games incorporate gambling-like elements into their design (and vice versa). Social casino games - a type of video game that mimics gambling activities-are one such example. In the current experimental research, we examined whether offering tangible rewards (i.e., rewards with value outside the game) in a social casino game was associated with increased social casino game play and subsequent gambling. Participants (N = 213, Mage = 36.5, 55.3% female) were recruited from CloudResearch. They were randomly assigned to either a reward condition (n = 109) in which, following a week of so

Passive Social Media Use Is Associated with Social Withdrawal ("Hikikomori") Vulnerability in Autistic and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder Young Adults.

Autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental conditions associated with social communication differences and distinctive patterns of online engagement. Both conditions have been linked to increased risk of social withdrawal, yet little research has examined hikikomori vulnerability-a continuum of withdrawal-related tendencies-within a transdiagnostic digital context. This study investigated hikikomori vulnerability among UK-based young adults with autism or ADHD and examined how active and passive social media use and online gaming relate to withdrawal vuln

Application of Behaviour Change Techniques in Promoting Physical Activity Among Adults with Chronic Conditions: An Umbrella Review.

This umbrella review examined the application of behaviour change techniques (BCTs) and their associations with physical activity (PA) outcomes in interventions targeting adults with chronic conditions. A comprehensive search of five databases was conducted up to 20 December 2024, identifying eighteen eligible systematic reviews (including nine meta-analyses), encompassing 468 primary studies and over 57,500 participants. BCTs were coded using the BCT Taxonomy v1, and review quality was assessed using AMSTAR 2. Across the included studies, eleven BCTs were most frequently employed, clustering

Create your own path: social cerebellum in sequence-based self-guided navigation.

Spatial trajectory planning and execution in a social context play a vital role in our daily lives. To study this process, participants completed a goal-directed task involving either observing a sequence of preferred goals and self-planning a trajectory (Self Sequencing) or observing and reproducing the entire trajectory taken by others (Other Sequencing). The results indicated that in the observation phase, witnessing entire trajectories created by others (Other Sequencing) recruited cerebellar mentalizing areas (Crus 2 and 1) and cortical mentalizing areas in the precuneus, ventral and dors

[Between asylym and shelter: Points of reference.].

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the importance acquired by the issue of homelessness in the mental health debate over the last thirty years as well as propose references for the elaboration of practices according to conditions of this reality. The author discusses the social and historic context of mental health that he describes as a 180 degree reversal in the risk of institutional lockup to lockup in homelessness. On a psychosocial level, he proposes an understanding of homelessness as one of powerlessness over freedom. Drawing from his clinical and professional experience, he

Acne treatment: analysis of acne-related social media posts and the impact on patient care.

Many patients use social media as a source of medical information on dermatologic diseases. Social media offers accessible methods of communicating with physicians, other patients, and pharmacies. The information gathered through social media posts has the potential to influence patients' views of their conditions and treatment options, though the source often is unknown. This systematic review examined the content and source of social media posts identified using the search terms acne and treatment across all social media platforms available through a commercial social media data aggregating

Reduced recruitment of orbitofrontal cortex to human social chemosensory cues in social anxiety.

Social anxiety refers to the prevalent and debilitating experience of fear and anxiety of being scrutinized in social situations. It originates from both learned (e.g. adverse social conditioning) and innate (e.g. shyness) factors. Research on social anxiety has traditionally focused on negative emotions induced by visual and auditory social cues in socially anxious clinical populations, and posits a dysfunctional orbitofrontal-amygdala circuit as a primary etiological mechanism. Yet as a trait, social anxiety is independent of one's specific emotional state. Here we probe the neural substrate

Severe impairments of social interaction and associated abnormalities in children: epidemiology and classification.

The prevalence, in children aged under 15, of severe impairments of social interaction, language abnormalities, and repetitive stereotyped behaviors was investigated in an area of London. A "socially impaired" group (more than half of whom were severely retarded) and a comparison group of "sociable severely mentally retarded" children were identified. Mutism or echolalia, and repetitive stereotyped behaviors were found in almost all the socially impaired children, but to a less marked extent in a minority of the sociable severely retarded. Certain organic conditions were found more often in th

Automatic measurement of social gaze during naturalistic conversations in autism.

Standardized, granular measurement of social communication behaviors, such as social gaze during natural interactions, is needed for a range of psychiatric applications including diagnosis and detecting clinical change in conditions such as autism. Computational approaches show promise in automatically measuring social behaviors within natural settings. This study aims to automatically measure social gaze features from videos of dyadic conversations, characterize autism-related differences, and capture individual-level differences. 46 autistic Participants and 36 neurotypical Participants, age

Social exclusion, health and hidden homelessness.

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness and poverty are extreme forms of social exclusion which extend beyond the lack of physical or material needs. The purpose of this study was to explore and expand the concept of social exclusion within the social determinants of health perspective - to understand how the social environment, health behaviours and health status are associated with material and social deprivation. STUDY DESIGN: Fundamental qualitative description with tones of focused ethnography. METHODS: Participants who identified as hidden homeless described their everyday living conditions and how t

Advances in recognition and treatment of social anxiety disorder: a 10-year retrospective.

Social anxiety disorder frequently begins in early life and is associated with the subsequent development of comorbid conditions such as depressive and substance use disorders. Social anxiety disorder, particularly the generalized subtype, is characterized by marked impairment in numerous functional domains, including education and social relations. Paroxetine, the first medication to receive an indication in the United States for the treatment of social anxiety disorder, has been shown to be effective in 50% to 60% of patients. The mechanism of action of paroxetine in the treatment of social

Equality and poverty: views from managers and professionals from public services and household heads in the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Area, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Tackling poverty requires reconsideration of quantitative factors related to "who" is poor and by "how much" and qualitative factors addressing "what poverty means in these individuals' lives". Greater understanding is required concerning the types of access actually used by families in poverty in attempts to meet their basic needs. Poverty must be addressed based on the question: "Inequality of what?" It is in reflecting on the realities of such groups when their basic needs are not met that public policies can be improved and implemented with legitimate priorities. OBJECTIVE: De
