Knowledge, Attitudes, Psychosocial Perspectives and Applied Epidemiology in the Control of Head Lice (pediculosis capitis) in Croatian Preschool Children: A Qualitative Study on Childcare Professionals and Health Coordinators.

This study aimed to concurrently determine the perceived knowledge, attitudes and perspectives of childcare professionals working in kindergartens towards pediculosis capitis, a common ectoparasitic disease also known as head lice, as well as gain insights into procedures and control measures that are implemented in an outbreak setting. We used a qualitative approach with a problem-centered, semi-structured and three-part interview technique conducted in selected kindergartens of Varaždin and Međimurje counties of the Republic of Croatia. Based on a purposive (deliberate) sampling method, the

Social cognition in Korsakoff's syndrome: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Korsakoff's syndrome is an alcohol-related neurocognitive disorder characterized by episodic memory impairments, apathy, confabulations and poor illness-insight. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate mean effect sizes of performance in social cognition in people with Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) compared with controls. METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted in May 2024 to identify research articles that examined social cognition in patients with KS and control groups. Weighted effect sizes (Hedges' g) were calculated for the three levels of social cognition: emo

Comparison of Insomnia, Depression, and Perceived Social Support among Individuals with Amphetamine Use Disorder (AUD) and Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: Compared to the general population, individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) report more frequently to suffer from sleep disturbances and symptoms of depression, and to perceive lower social support. Here, we investigated whether this pattern of mental health issues could be confirmed and replicated among individuals with amphetamine use disorder (AUD). We also assessed the degree of perceived social support from their families, friends and significant others, always compared to healthy controls (HC) of the general population. METHOD: Individuals with AUD attending the Outpa

Executive and social functioning in pediatric posterior fossa tumor survivors and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Executive and social functioning difficulty is well established in pediatric brain tumor survivors. Few studies have compared posterior fossa (PF) tumor survivors in comparison to their peers. The relationship between attention, processing speed, working memory, fatigue, and executive and social functioning was investigated to better understand the factors that impact executive and social functioning in PF tumor populations. METHODS: Sixteen medulloblastomas, 9 low-grade astrocytomas (LGAs), and 17 healthy controls recruited from 4 sites completed measures of working memory and pr

Effects of prenatal exposure to valproic acid or poly(I:C) on ultrasonic vocalizations in rat pups: The role of social cues.

Sociocommunicative deficits commonly observed in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be experimentally modeled using rodents' ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs). For example, USVs emitted by pups, separated from their mothers and nest, serve as a useful tool to identify autistic-like behaviors during the early period of development. Being sensitive to social context, these neonatal calls may help to reveal reduced social attachment or abnormal processing of social information. The aim of the present study was to characterize quantitative and structural changes in USVs emitted during isolation by m

Who holds the key to recovery? The relevance of health locus of control in physiotherapy.

Health locus of control (HLC) is a key psychological construct that influences how individuals perceive control over their health and engage in rehabilitation. This masterclass provides an overview of HLC and its relevance to physiotherapy practice. Drawing from social learning theory (SLT), HLC reflects the extent to which individuals attribute health-related outcomes to internal or external factors. Evidence suggests that HLC is associated with health behaviors, treatment adherence, patient-provider communication, and rehabilitation outcomes. Individuals with a more internal HLC believe that

Sharing Health Stories in a World of Privacy Risk.

This commentary examines a collection of narratives published in Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics by individuals who chose to "go public" with sensitive health experiences on social media. The authors' stories offer rich qualitative insights into the benefits and harms of online self-disclosure. In the stories, three themes emerge. First, the desire to share is not opposed to privacy; rather, privacy makes meaningful sharing possible. Second, social media platforms' promises of user control largely fail in practice, leaving people who share personal information online vulnerable to algorithmic a

Decrease of prefrontal-posterior EEG coherence: loose control during social-emotional stimulation.

In two experiments we aimed to investigate if individual differences in state-dependent decreases or increases of EEG coherence between prefrontal and posterior cortical regions may be indicative of a mechanism modulating the impact social-emotional information has on an individual. Two independent samples were exposed to an emotional stimulation paradigm in which the participants were invited to get involved and sympathize with the persons they were watching (study 1) or listening to (study 2), and who were expressing sadness or anxiety. The two studies yielded consistent results. Higher scor

Prefrontal-limbic dysconnectivity tracks emotion regulation deficits in depressed adolescents with social anxiety symptom severity.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescence is frequently accompanied by emotion regulation (ER) deficits, particularly in socially stressful contexts. Social anxiety symptoms frequently co-occur with adolescent depression and are associated with individual differences in emotional and neural responses to social threat. However, how individual differences in social anxiety symptom severity relate to ER processes during social exclusion in depressed adolescents remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: Sixty-two adolescents (30 MDD, 32 healthy controls; aged 12-18) completed a

Framing effects of health education materials on rural public intention for dog vaccination against rabies in China.

BACKGROUND: Implementing more efficient education about dog vaccination against rabies in rural areas is crucial for rabies prevention and control in China, which is one of the countries most severely affected by rabies. The effectiveness of public education is significantly influenced by the discourse used. Given the paucity of studies examining how different discourse promote intentions to vaccinate dogs against rabies, this study explores the persuasive effectiveness of different goal frames and social norms on rural dog owners’ willingness to vaccinate their dogs and the implication for th

Swimming speed of schooling fish controls social interaction strength in open-loop immersive virtual reality.

Collective motion in fish schools emerges from local social interactions, whose strength may vary with behavioural context. Swimming speed is known to influence manoeuvrability, spatial organization and information flow, yet its causal role in shaping social interaction strength remains poorly understood. Here, we experimentally test whether and how neighbour speed modulates social interactions in schooling fish. Using an immersive open-loop virtual-reality system, we exposed freely swimming rummy-nose tetras Hemigrammus rhodostomus to a single virtual conspecific moving along circular traject

[Family status and social integration as predictors of mortality: a 5-year follow-up study of 55- to 74-year-old men and women in the Augsburg area].

The relation between marital status, social integration and the mortality from all causes was examined in a population based cohort study. The 5-year-cohort consisted of 1,030 men and 957 women, aged 55-74 years who participated in the second MONICA Survey Augsburg, F.R.G., 1989/90 (MONICA = Monitoring of trends and determinants of cardiovascular disease). They were followed for mortality until 1995. Altogether 120 men and 45 women had died. Social integration was measured by an index of social ties. The index of social ties examined in these analyses includes (a) presence of a spouse, (b) num

Individual and interpersonal factors associated with care-related quality of life in older adults: a comparison of home-based services, nursing homes and sheltered housing.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how long-term care (LTC) services affect care-related quality of life (CRQoL) and potential differences between LTC services is important, especially considering ageing in place policies. However, data on CRQoL is lacking. This study aims to investigate characteristics associated with CRQoL and compare CRQoL across service types. METHODS: From October 2022 to January 2024, older adults in Norway were interviewed using ASCOT (Adult social care outcomes toolkit): 151 in nursing homes, 129 in sheltered housing and 134 in home-based services. Mixed effects models investi

Use of social networking sites by parents of very low birth weight infants: experiences and the potential of a dedicated site.

UNLABELLED: The objective of this study was to study the experiences of parents of preterm infants who use social networking sites and the potential of such sites for gathering information and facilitating personal exchange. An anonymous self-reporting questionnaire was administered to parents of infants below 1,500 g birth weight born between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010 in two tertiary neonatal intensive care units. Of the 278 families who were sent a questionnaire, 141 responded; 53.6 % of respondents claimed to be presently members of online social networking sites. However, only

The unique and synergistic effects of social isolation and loneliness on 20-years mortality risks in older men and women.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the individual and combined impacts of loneliness and social isolation on 20-year mortality risks among older men and women. METHODS: Utilizing data from the Norwegian Life Course, Ageing, and Generation study (NorLAG) carried out in 2002, 2007 and 2017, we assessed loneliness via direct and indirect questions, and social isolation through factors like partnership status and contact frequency with family and friends. Yearly information on mortality was derived from the national registries and was available until November 2022. Gender-stratified Cox regres

Functional analysis of self-injurious behavior in an adult with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

A three-phase functional analysis was conducted to discover controlling variables of self-injury in a 28-year-old individual with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Experimental verification followed information-gathering and interpretive phases. Self-injurious responses were blocked to prevent harm to the participant; therefore, responses measured were precursors to self-injury. A multielement experimental design included four assessment conditions: social attention contingent on precursory behavior, attention contingent on behavior incompatible with precursory behavior, continuous attention and minimal a

Successfully addressing non-compliance with behavioral and social infection control measures is a critical component in management of healthcare worker COVID-19 outbreaks: learning outcomes from the first staff outbreak in the main maternity hospital in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: Nosocomial healthcare worker (HCW) SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks are well recognized. Contact tracing, use of surgical masks, hand hygiene and social distancing can prevent spread. Social and behavioral factors play an important role in outbreak control. We provide an integrated report on management of our first outbreak and lessons learned. METHODS: Demographic and test result information was extracted from the outbreak report. Infection control practices were audited using a standardized behavior assessment tool. Exposure risk was ascertained using World Health Organization definitions.

Recent developments in the psychopharmacology of social phobia.

The past 2 decades have witnessed an upsurge in the interest in anxiety disorders. Much research effort has been dedicated to panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, it is only very recently that we have begun to understand some of the basic principles about the psychopharmacology of social phobia. Drug classes thus far studied include beta-blockers, nonselective and irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and benzodiazepines. Beta blockers appear to be of use in specific social phobias, such as public speaking, whereas they are of little use in generalized social
