Affective lability and social functioning in severe mental disorders.

Social functioning is impaired in severe mental disorders despite clinical remission, illustrating the need to identify other mechanisms that hinder psychosocial recovery. Affective lability is elevated and associated with an increased clinical burden in psychosis spectrum disorders. We aimed to investigate putative associations between affective lability and social functioning in 293 participants with severe mental disorders (schizophrenia- and bipolar spectrum), and if such an association was independent of well-established predictors of social impairments. The Affective Lability Scale (ALS-

Comparison of four factors related to embarrassment in nontypical situations.

To assess the particularities of four factors in assessing embarrassment (i.e., apprehension of social evaluation, inconsistency with self-image, disruption of social interaction, and loss of self-esteem) in four nontypical situations in Japan (i.e., nervousness about others, uneasiness with others, self-consciousness, and sexual circumstances), 109 university students were presented descriptions of 8 scenes and rated 17 items to measure factors related to embarrassment. Analysis indicated that disruption of social interaction was rated as characteristic of every situation. This result suggest…

Social anxiety and vulnerability for problematic drinking in college students: the moderating role of post-event processing.

Socially anxious college students are at increased risk for engaging in problematic drinking (i.e. heavy or risky drinking) behaviors that are associated with the development of an alcohol use disorder. The present study examined whether post-event processing (PEP), repeatedly thinking about and evaluating one's performance in a past social situation, strengthens the association between social anxiety and vulnerability to problematic drinking among college students. Eighty-three college drinkers with high or low social anxiety participated in a social interaction task and were exposed to a man…

Scenes from a Marriage: How We Found Our Way from Experimental Psychology to Social Neuroscience.

Looking back on our life and work, we reflect on the changes in our thinking due to three scientific and technological revolutions. These ar … de us realize that cognitive processes at all levels of the information processing hierarchy impact social interactions. We locate the influence of culture at the highest level of this processing hierarchy. Here we see the interface between different minds and the importance of norms when regulating the opposing trends in our complex and even contradictory social na …

Impact of COVID-19 on the social relationships and mental health of older adults living alone: A two-year prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Owing to the COVID-19 outbreak, older adults living alone, who can only connect socially outside their homes, are at risk of social isolation and poor mental health. This study aimed to identify the changes, before and after COVID-19, by sex and age, in social relationships (social activity, social network, and social support) and mental health (depression and suicide ideation) among older adults living alone. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study of community-dwelling older adults who were at least 65 years old and living alone in South Korea. The study was conducted during

The protective effect of operant social reward on cocaine self-administration, choice, and relapse is dependent on delay and effort for the social reward.

Social reinforcement-based treatments are effective for many, but not all, people with addictions to drugs. We recently developed an operant rat model that mimics features of one such treatment, the community-reinforcement approach. In this model, rats uniformly choose social interaction over methamphetamine or heroin. Abstinence induced by social preference protects against the incubation of drug-seeking that would emerge during forced abstinence. Here, we determined whether these findings generalize to cocaine and whether delaying or increasing effort for social interaction could reveal poss…

A visual perceptual perspective on gaze in social robotics.

Where and when should a robot look during interaction with humans? Intuitively, human-human interaction serves as the blueprint. In such interactions, gaze plays a central role, both in visually guiding action and in signaling communication. Yet, most social robotics research still relies on the oversimplified eye-mind assumption, equating gaze with visual attention, and often implements gaze behaviors without accounting for perceptual limits or individual variability. We identify three core challenges at the intersection of psychology, visual perception, and robotics: (1) disentangling the du

Rethinking the study of newborn sociality: Challenges and opportunities.

Growing empirical evidence from the past quarter century reveals surprising sociality in newborns-infants in the first 28 postnatal days-including their ability to elicit and sustain contingent interactions with mutual gaze, social smiling, and sensitively timed, speech-like vocalizations. Newborns seem to have communicative expectations and behave as if they predict others' goal-directed actions. Despite these discoveries, I review key barriers to progress in newborn developmental science. First, newborn social behavior research has almost exclusively focused on "average" development-based pr

Evaluating the interplay between subclinical levels of mental health symptoms and coordination dynamics.

Viewed under the broad theoretical umbrella of an embodied-embedded approach to psychological activity, body movements can be seen to play an essential role in shaping social interaction. Of note, research concerning the embodiment of social cognition has documented key differences in non-verbal behaviour during social interaction for individuals diagnosed with a range of disorders, including social anxiety disorder and autism spectrum disorder. The present work sets out to extend these findings by better understanding the interplay between subclinical variation in psychopathology and social-m…

The relationship of post-event processing to self-evaluation of performance in social anxiety.

Socially anxious and control participants engaged in a social interaction with a confederate and then wrote about themselves or the other person (i.e., self-focused post-event processing [SF-PEP] vs. other-focused post-event processing [OF-PEP]) and completed several questionnaires. One week later, participants completed measures concerning their evaluation of their performance in the social interaction and the degree to which they engaged in post-event processing (PEP) during the week. Socially anxious individuals evaluated their performance in the social interaction more poorly than control …

Social Isolation Among Older Adults With Dysphagia Requiring Home Health Care: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that community-dwelling older adults with impaired swallowing functions have a higher risk of social isolation than individuals without impaired function. The aim of this study was to identify the association of dysphagia with social isolation in home care patients using daily interaction frequency and laughter frequency as indicators of social interaction. METHODS: One hundred ninety home care patients, aged ≥65 years, were included in this cross-sectional questionnaire survey. The patients' basic information, level of care required, and social back…

Task-dependent and distinct roles of the temporoparietal junction and inferior frontal cortex in the control of imitation.

The control of neurological networks supporting social cognition is crucially important for social interaction. In particular, the control of imitation is directly linked to interaction quality, with impairments associated with disorders characterized by social difficulties. Previous work suggests inferior frontal cortex (IFC) and the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) are involved in controlling imitation, but the functional roles of these areas remain unclear. Here, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was used to enhance cortical excitability at IFC and the TPJ prior to the completion…

The Role of Context in Psychosocial Stress among Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Piloting a Semi-structured, Videogame-based Paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterised by altered social patterns, often associated with increased stress. While puberty is associated with increased stress, there is limited research on stress response to social interaction in adolescents with ASD. The study investigated stress response to semi-structured, videogame-based interaction in adolescents with and without ASD, and the impact of puberty. METHOD: Twelve adolescents with ASD and 12 typically developing (TD) peers participated in a semi-structured, videogame-based social interaction. Stress was measured via salivar…

Factor structure of social fears: The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale.

In the assessment of social anxiety, investigators often differentiate between social interactional anxiety and performance anxiety. The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), a clinician-administered measure of social anxiety and avoidance, was originally developed with separate subscales for the assessment of fear and avoidance of situations involving social interaction and performance/observation by others. Separate confirmatory factor analyses of the LSAS fear and avoidance ratings demonstrated that this two-factor model did not provide an adequate fit to the data, suggesting the need to f…
