Predictors of partial remission in older patients treated for major depression: the role of comorbid dysthymia.

OBJECTIVE: The authors studied demographic, clinical, social, and perceived health and well-being factors as predictors of partial remission in older patients treated for major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: The sample included 186 patients who met DSM-IV criteria for MDD and underwent naturalistic treatment. Remission status was determined by Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale score. Ordinal logistic-regression was used to model the relationship between predictors and remission on an ordinal scale. RESULTS: A total of 26.9% patients were in partial remission (score: 7-15), and 2

Association between sociodemographic factors and mobility limitation among older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

BACKGROUND: Mobility is an independent predictor of physical functionality, healthy ageing, and quality of life. Various literatures have associated mobility limitation in older adulthood with demographic and socioeconomic factors. Hence, we propose a systematic review and meta-analysis to synthesise the association between sociodemographic factors and mobility limitations in older adults. METHODS AND ANALYSES: This protocol was written according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) guidelines. We will perform a comprehensive search of

A Danish version of the life-space assessment (LSA-DK) - translation, content validity and cultural adaptation using cognitive interviewing in older mobility limited adults.

BACKGROUND: Identification and prevention of mobility limitations in older adults is important to reduce adverse health outcomes. The Life-Space Assessment (LSA) provides a single measure of mobility including environmental and social resources of the older adult. Availability of the LSA for non-English speaking countries is still sparse. Therefore, we translated the LSA into Danish and performed a content validity analysis of the translation in older adults with mobility limitations. METHODS: After translation into Danish, the Danish version (LSA-DK) was content validated using cognitive int

Socio-economic status and mental disorder--profile of a Nigerian psychiatric inpatient population.

A study of the socio-economic and diagnostic profile of psychiatric patients treated at a mental hospital in Nigeria over a period of six months was conducted. Schizophrenia, organic psychosis, and mental sub-normality were found to have been diagnosed more often among under privileged persons from lower socio-economic classes; while affective disorder (manic depression) and neurotic illness were commoner among persons from economically more fortunate higher social classes. Males exceeded females in the cohort and the patients generally exhibited upward social mobility when compared with their…

The 'good mobile': a mobile launcher for children to facilitate human interactions.

Children today grow up in a hybrid physical and digital environment, engaging with mobile devices from an early age, which poses a risk of negatively impacting their development. This usage often replaces social interactions and physical activities, potentially deteriorating relationships, socio-cognitive skills, and mental health. Banning device use is unrealistic, but the way children use mobiles can be altered through responsible technology. In the present study we (1) explored parental expectations regarding children's mobile applications, (2) directlyincorporated these expectations into t

Variations in social care need reporting amongst GP practices in England: a retrospective cohort study in people with multimorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity, the presence of multiple chronic health conditions, presents significant challenges in both health and social care settings. Addressing social care needs, such as assistance with daily activities and support for managing finances, is crucial in care management patients with multimorbidity. However, variability in the documentation and reporting of these needs remains poorly understood. This study aimed to quantify the variations in social care need (SCN) reporting across GP practices in England. METHODS: We conducted a population-based study using electronic health

Effectiveness of a mobile-based HIV prevention intervention for the rural and low-income population involving incentive policy to doctors in Liangshan, China: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: The HIV/AIDS epidemic is a concerning problem in many parts of the world, especially in rural and poor areas. Due to health service inequality and public stigma towards the disease, it is difficult to conduct face-to-face interventions. The widespread use of mobile phones and social media applications thus provide a feasible and acceptable approach for HIV prevention and education delivery in this population. The study aims to develop a generalizable, effective, acceptable, and convenient mobile-based information intervention model to improve HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, pract

A head-mounted open-source light field microscope for large volumetric Ca2+ imaging during exploratory and social behavior in mice.

Capturing neuronal activity during natural behaviors in unrestrained animals is critical for understanding brain function, yet existing imaging systems struggle to combine volumetric field-of-view (v-FOV), high resolution, depth, and usability. We present MiniLFMv2, a lightweight, next-generation miniaturized light field microscope enabling volumetric imaging with a v-FOV of ⌀1 × 0.2 mm3, volume rates of up to 30 Hz and depth to ∼350-400 μm. MiniLFMv2 achieves near-diffraction-limited performance, with a working distance of 1 mm. Its custom aspheric lenses and electrically tunable lens elimina

Living Longer after Labor Market Exit: Making Functional Healthspan a Public Health Nursing Priority.

Increasing longevity after labour market exit represents a major social achievement, but the number of years gained does not indicate whether they are lived with preserved mobility, autonomy, cognitive resources, and social participation. Across many countries, retirement and labour market exit precede two or more decades of later life, creating an overlooked opportunity for preventive action. This editorial argues that functional healthspan during these years should become a public health nursing priority. Nurses working in public health, primary care, and community settings are well position

Exploring the Mediating Role of Social Support and Fall Efficacy on the Association Between Falls and Physical Activity: A Cross-Sectional Study in an Assisted-Living Population.

Mobility restriction as a consequence of a fall is a major issue in assisted-living facilities. Although many factors are related to falling, little is known about the relationship between falls, social support, falls efficacy, and physical activity. The authors examined the relationship between falls and the Social Support Questionnaire, the Activities-specific Balance Confidence scale, and physical activity simultaneously in 81 older adults (66-94 years) using structural equation modeling. The structural equation model revealed that being older was associated with lower falls efficacy and a

Health hazards of obesity.

Several health hazards and social disabilities are associated with obesity. Increased mortality is associated with increased body weight. A high rate of mortality results from heart disease, diabetes mellitus, gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, and cancer. Physiologic cardiovascular changes occur, leading to left ventricular hypertrophy and lipid abnormalities. Hypertension, stroke, and venous stasis are increased. Pulmonary abnormalities include obstructive sleep apnea, which can be associated with secondary polycythemia and right ventricular hypertrophy. Gallstones, gallbladder diseas

Solving teenage and young mothers' childhood immunization hesitance and non-compliance through mobile immunization friendly service for working mothers in Ibadan, Nigeria- A research note.

Mobile Immunization for working mothers (SheVaccs) is an intervention targeted at working mothers in the informal markets of Ibadan to address problem of vaccine hesitance and drop-out among different categories of mother. These mothers have great responsibilities-keeping their homes stable and their children healthy. But these mothers have challenges of different magnitudes that prevented them from immunizing their children, and for teenage mothers they are faced with socio-cultural and socio-economic obstacles and have not responded positively to childhood immunization. In relation to these

Curbing an outbreak of circulating vaccine derived poliovirus type 2 in Dollo Zone, Somali Region, Ethiopia: response to outbreak.

INTRODUCTION: although the oral polio vaccine prevents virus transmission from person to person, it is crucial for poliovirus eradication. The continued use of live attenuated poliovirus poses an ongoing risk of circulating Vaccine Derived Poliovirus-2 (cVDPV2) outbreaks. This study assesses the response to the cVDPV2 outbreak in Dollo Zone, Somali Region, Ethiopia. METHODS: after examining and verifying the occurrence of the outbreak, a team was established and prepared by resource mobilization, advocacy, and social mobilization. The group endorsed a four-step vaccination strategy, first the
