Association Between Changes in the Level of Social Support and Falls Among Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between self-reported falls and level of social support or changes in social support among older adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from two repeated surveys were collected from the Mayo Clinic Biobank. Participants completed a baseline survey at the time of enrollment in the Mayo Clinic Biobank and a 10-year follow-up survey. We used logistic regression models to assess the association of seven social support variables reported in the baseline survey with fall-related outcomes reported in the follow-up survey. Similar analyses were conducted to assess …

Social support, resilience, and demoralization in patients with breast cancer: a moderated network analysis.

PURPOSES: Demoralization is common among individuals with breast cancer, and both social support and resilience are recognized as protective factors. However, the way these two factors interact at the symptom level remains unclear. This study therefore sought to clarify how resilience modifies the association between social support and demoralization at both symptom and construct levels. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis, a total of 412 patients with breast cancer from the Be Resilient to Breast Cancer (BRBC) program completed the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), the Cancer-Spec…

Influence of Social Support and Quality of Life on Mortality Among Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate the predictive value of social support and quality of life on all-cause mortality in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. METHODS: The Social Support Rating Scale and Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short-Form 1.3 were used to evaluate social…

Self-Evaluation in Childhood Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Repeated Exposure with Support Strategies.

Children with social anxiety disorder (SAD) often perceive their social performance more negatively than external observers, reinforcing negative self-appraisals. Cognitive models suggest a vicious cycle between such distortions and heightened anxiety. This study tested whether repeated exposure to a social-evaluative task, paired with brief, ecologically valid support strategies, improves self-appraisal in children with SAD compared to baseline without support. Participants were 76 children (SAD: n = 33, Mage = 11.73, SD = 1.46, 64% female; healthy controls [HC]: n = 43, Mage = 11.40, SD = 1.

Adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: The moderating influence of social support utilization on depression.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period marked by physiological and psychological imbalances, which pose an increased risk for adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) to commit non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). AIM: To investigate the moderating role of social support utilization in depression and NSSI among adolescents with MDD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 314 adolescents with MDD (258 with NSSI, 56 without) from a Chinese tertiary psychiatric hospital (2021-2023). Participants completed validated scales, including the self-esteem scale, the Barratt impulsiveness scale,…

With a little help from my friends: Social support, hope and climate change engagement.

Hope is a future-oriented emotion that attunes people to the possibility of positive change, and thus could potentially catalyse societal en … dia messages used in many studies. Here we consider an alternative source of action hope: receiving social support. Two studies tested whether social support motivates climate action via increased action hope. Study 1 (correlational online survey, pre-registered, N = 887) demonstrates that, as predicted, both instrumental and emotional support predict intentions …

Interaction between ghrelin and social support predicts antidepressant treatment outcomes in patients with depression.

We aimed to investigate the interactive effects of baseline perceived social support and serum ghrelin levels on antidepressant treatment outcomes, specifically 12-week remission and 24-month relapse, in patients with depressive disorders. This prospective naturalistic study included a large cohort of patients treated for depression under routine clinical conditions. Social support was measured using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and serum ghrelin was quantified at baseline. Participants received individualized pharmacological treatments over 12 weeks (N = 1086), foll…

Perceived social support and mental health in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: mediating effects of resilience.

Adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) experience elevated risks of psychological distress, yet the psychosocial mechanisms underlying this burden remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of psychological distress in adolescents with AIS and to investigate the roles of perceived social support and resilience as protective factors. In this cross-sectional study, 229 adolescents aged 12-18 years with confirmed AIS were recruited from a tertiary spine surgery center. Participants completed the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), the Multidimensional Scale of …

Females with BD are special populations who suffer a lot from childhood trauma, social support, cognitive deficits, and suicidality. In this study, the relationship among childhood trauma, social support, and clinical symptoms of BD was investigated and the risk factors for suicidality were explored in female patients with BD. METHODS: This study included 57 drug-naive female BD patients, 64 female BD patients with long-term medication, and 50 age-matched female healthy controls. Childhood trauma, social …

Social support among gender diverse people: Are we measuring what we think we are?

BACKGROUND: To assess social support among gender diverse people, measures normed and validated with cisgender participants are used, most commonly the Multidimensional Scale of Social Support (MSPSS). Despite widespread use, the psychometric properties of the MSPSS have not been systematically investigated among gender diverse people. Thus, it is unclear whether use of the MSPSS is appropriate for this population. METHOD: Using a mixed-method approach (e.g. deductive thematic analysis and confirmatory factor analyses), we explored the factor structure of the MSPSS among gender diverse partic…

Exploring Social Support Experiences of Caregivers of Persons Living With Dementia in Hospice Care.

As the number of persons living with dementia (PLWD) enrolling in hospice care rises, caregiver support becomes increasingly crucial. While social support can help buffer caregiver stress, many caregivers report feeling isolated and having unmet needs, highlighting the limited research on this population. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to better understand caregivers' social support during the period when the PLWD is enrolled in hospice care. Analyzing qualitative data from 22 caregivers of PLWD using conventional content analysis, we identified the theme "Variations in Social Connec…

Long-term impact of adverse childhood experiences and perceived social support on depression trajectories.

BACKGROUND: While the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on depression is well-documented, how ACEs, physical violence victimization, social support, and school belongingness altogether shape depression from adolescence to young adulthood remains unclear. This study aims to clarify these relations by tracing the trajectory of depression across this critical developmental period. METHODS: We utilized a 14-year, four-wave dataset from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), including 5734 participants who were 7th to 12th graders at baseline (51.4…

"Associations between maternal perceptions of social support and adolescent weight status: A longitudinal analysis".

Social support is a well-established predictor of improved physical health outcomes among adults. Establishing whether maternal social support may have an inter-generational positive impact on their child's physical health will provide important information for developing potential interventions and policies. Elevated body mass index (BMI) is one indicator of child health that is linked to increased risk for cardiovascular disease and other morbidities later in life. There is some evidence that maternal social support is associated with improved child and adolescent weight status; however, no …

Social support network factors associated with verbal fluency among vulnerable persons living with HIV.

Vulnerable persons living with HIV (PLWH) are at high risk of cognitive impairment and challenges accessing quality social support in later life. Impaired verbal fluency (VF), a cognitive domain linked to HIV, could impede social support associated with health and well-being for already vulnerable PLWH. We examined the structure of social support, using latent class analysis, and the associations among quantity, specific forms and quality of social support and VF among PLWH. Participants enrolled in the BEACON study (n = 383) completed the Controlled Oral Word Association test (COWAT) and a so…
