Herbivory leaves a soil-borne defensive legacy that recruits parasitoids.

How organisms convert short-term stress into long-term defense is a key ecological question. Classic herbivore-induced plant volatiles recruit natural enemies but act briefly only in damaged tissues. Here, we report that leaf herbivory establishes a persistent soil defensive legacy to help uninfested subsequent plants attract parasitoids. During the conditioning phase, herbivory systemically activates jasmonate signaling, which reprograms root metabolism and promotes the exudation of specific flavonoids, notably daidzein and genistein. These compounds selectively restructure the rhizosphere mi…

Potentilla anserina reshapes soil-microbe networks in alpine meadow restoration.

The formation of bare patches in degraded alpine meadows represents a critical bottleneck for ecological restoration. Potentilla anserina can rapidly cover exposed soil surfaces owing to its strong capacity for asexual reproduction. However, whether its secondary ecological functions extend beyond physical coverage remains unclear. In August 2024, rhizosphere and bulk soil samples were collected from both bare patches and P. anserina-colonized patches and analyzed via 16S rRNA and ITS high-throughput sequencing. The results revealed that the ameliorative effects of plants on soil physicochemic…

Neutral Additivity Dominates the Outcome of Soil Microbial Community Coalescence.

Microbial community coalescence is a major mode of microbial dispersal and assembly, yet the ecological mechanisms underlying this process remain largely unexplored. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap through several microcosm experiments involving soil mixing, sterilization, as well as microbial extraction and inoculation, using soils collected from six paired croplands and adjacent ecosystems in southwestern China. We found that coalesced soils generally exhibited intermediate properties relative to their source soils. Regarding soil microbial community coalescence with an equal ratio, ne…

Evidence for endemism and local adaptation in Antarctic soil bacteria.

Antarctic soils represent one of the most extreme environments for microbial life on Earth, yet they harbor heterogeneous and diverse microbial communities. Biologists have long hypothesized that Antarctic microorganisms are unique from those found on other continents due to the extreme geographic isolation and the cold, dry, and challenging conditions typical of Antarctica. To test this hypothesis, we focused on a cosmopolitan bacterial genus, Arthrobacter, that is widely distributed across global soils. We first profiled a global metagenomic dataset from both Antarctic and non-Antarctic surf…

Multiple Global Change Stressors Boost Soil Greenhouse Gas Emissions Worldwide.

Soil carbon greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are integral to climate security worldwide. Global change is known to impact soil GHG emissions; yet, the contribution of an increasing number of global change factors (GCFs) to the rates of carbon GHG emissions remains virtually unknown, challenging our capacity to forecast the trajectory of climate change. Here, we synthesize 1803 observations on soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes across 21 types of GCFs spanning a wide range of ecosystems (i.e., forests, grasslands, farmland, wetlands, tundras, and deserts) and found that an increasing number of GCFs will res…

Effects of establishing mixed Eucalyptus plantations on soil phosphorus fractions.

We investigated pure Eucalyptus urophylla × E. grandis plantations (PP) and their mixtures with Erythrophleum fordii (EE), Dalbergia odorifera (ED), Castanopsis hystrix (EC), and Parashorea chinensis (EP), and studied soil phosphorus (P) fractions, soil physicochemical properties, fine-root traits of the dominant E. urophylla × E. grandis, microbial biomass, and extracellular enzyme activities in the 0-20 cm layer, as well as their interrelationships. We analyzed the mechanisms underlying the effects of mixed plantations of E. urophylla × E. grandis on soil P fractions. The results showed that…

The … he artifact of humidity accumulation inside CSCs on N2O emissions. The air relative humidity and topsoil moisture inside the CSCs were found to be significantly higher than those inside the OTDCs and over/in the field, leading to the CSCs' overestimation of N2O emissions by factors of 2.3-3.6. The overestimation of N2O emissions by CSCs was further ver …

The links between soil and water pollution and cardiovascular disease.

Soil and water pollution represent significant threats to global health, ecosystems, and biodiversity. Healthy soils underpin terrestrial ecosystems, supporting food production, biodiversity, water retention, and carbon sequestration. However, soil degradation jeopardizes the health of 3.2 billion people, while over 2 billion live in water-stressed regions. Pollution of soil, air, and water is a leading environmental cause of disease, contributing to over 9 million premature deaths annually. Soil contamination stems from heavy metals, synthetic chemicals, pesticides, and plastics, driven by in…

N-acetylglucosamine sensing in the filamentous soil fungus Trichoderma reesei.

N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) is involved in diverse signaling pathways in dimorphic yeasts and bacteria and is related to morphogenetic switching, mating, stress, virulence, and cell death. Recently, GlcNAc has been shown to promote plant growth by shaping the bacterial soil community. However, the role of GlcNAc sensing in filamentous soil fungi has not been investigated. By using Trichoderma reesei as a model organism, we show here that GlcNAc impacts the expression of around 2100 genes. Carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and secondary metabolism were the three most strongly aff…

Effects of environmentally relevant mixtures of microplastics on soil organisms.

Soil ecosystems are considered important sinks for microplastics (MPs). However, the effects of environmentally relevant mixtures of MPs on soil organisms have rarely been assessed. This study aimed to evaluate the chronic effects of a mixture of MPs on two model soil organisms, the earthworm Eisenia andrei and the springtail Folsomia candida. The MP mixture was composed of polymers and shapes frequently found in agricultural soils amended with sewage sludge, including high-density polyethylene and polypropylene fragments, and polyester fibers. The organisms were exposed in LUFA 2.2 soil to MP…

Tomato yields and quality declines due to elevated soil CO2.

The potential risk for CO2 leakage from carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems has raised significant concerns. While numerous studies have explored how crops respond to elevated soil CO2 levels, relatively few have examined the impacts on vegetables. Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) are a key vegetable crop, and this study sought to investigate how CO2 leakage affects their yield and quality. We conducted pot experiments comparing tomatoes grown under control conditions (no added CO2) with those exposed to elevated soil CO2 levels (1500 g m-2d-1). Our findings indicate that under CO2 leakage…

Iron-Driven Fast Decomposition of Soil Carbon Under Periodic Anoxia.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition underpins soil-atmosphere carbon exchange and is regulated by climate change-mediated variations in soil redox conditions. Periodic anoxia, commonly occurring following precipitation, soil flooding, and erosion events, is assumed to preserve SOC. Yet, water saturation may also increase SOC decomposition relative to unsaturated conditions, and contradictory findings among previous studies remain unexplained. Here, using incubation experiments on 20 soils collected across a 24° latitude gradient in China, we show that 70% of the soils showed a higher or si…

A Lecithin Liposome Stimulates Soil Microbial Respiration and Nitrate Immobilization.

Liposomes are microscale lipid vesicles used in pharmaceuticals, food products, and most recently, agriculture. Several studies have shown that liposomes can deliver nutrients to plant leaves, often more efficiently than traditional forms. However, the delivery of plant nutrients to soil via liposomes remains understudied. Interactions between liposomes and soil microbes, including metabolism of the lipid carbon (C) and assimilation of liposome-encapsulated nutrients into soil microbial biomass, could alter the availability of nutrients within the soil. We assessed the impact of lecithin lipos…

Accumulation of Soil Microbial Necromass Controlled by Microbe-Mineral Interactions.

Soil organic matter (SOM) is a key reservoir for global carbon (C), supporting soil fertility and influencing greenhouse gas emissions. Microbial residues, composed of dead cells and cellular fragments, are major contributors to SOM formation. Yet, mechanisms by which minerals enhance the accumulation of microbial residues remain poorly understood. Here, we used 13C-labeled glucose in a year-long incubation to trace microbial residue in sandy and silty soils. Across both soils, approximately 89% of retained microbial 13C was recovered in the fine (<53 μm) mineral-associated organic matter (MAO…

[Remediation Characteristics of Oil-contaminated Soil by Composite Microbial Communities].

To efficiently remediate oil-contaminated soil, the degradation characteristics of petroleum hydrocarbons were explored using composite petroleum-degrading flora. The results showed that the degradation rates of the J0, H, HN, HK, and HKN groups were 9.82%, 33.22%, 47.93%, 41.36%, and 61.06%, respectively, which showed that indigenous microorganisms had certain degradation effects on petroleum hydrocarbons. According to the correlation analysis among various environmental factors in the soil, the content of petroleum hydrocarbon in the soil was positively correlated with total nitrogen, total …

Fluvial avulsions influence soil fertility in the Pantanal wetlands (Brazil).

River avulsions drive important changes in the Pantanal wetlands, owing to their role in the hydro-sedimentology of the region. Although relevant to numerous ecosystem services, few studies have analyzed the influence of river avulsions on soil fertility in the Pantanal. Here, we use the largest ongoing avulsion in the Taquari River (Caronal region) to evaluate the effects on soil fertility, considering two factors: avulsion stage (1) and aquatic-terrestrial succession (2). Since both factors are influenced by macrophyte abundance, an incident map was created through tasseled cap indices from …
