Effect of endemic dietary herb extracts on mitigating acrylamide formation and sensory attributes of potato chips through repeated frying cycles.

Acrylamide, a suspected carcinogen formed during high-temperature cooking, is a major safety concern in widely consumed products like potato chips. This study aimed to reduce acrylamide formation using extracts from three Ethiopian herbs: Lippia adoensis var. adoensis (kesse), Lippia adoensis var. koseret (koseret), and Thymus schimperi Ronninger (tosign). Potato slices were pretreated with herb extracts and fried; selected extracts were also added to the frying oil during repeated use. Acrylamide content and sensory qualities of the chips subsequently assessed. Blanching with kesse extract re

Selenium Nanoparticles Mitigate Cadmium Stress in Tomato through Enhanced Accumulation and Transport of Sulfate/Selenite and Polyamines.

Accumulation of cadmium (Cd) ions in soil is an increasingly acute ecological problem in agriculture production. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) can mediate Cd tolerance in plants; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, we show that the foliar application of SeNPs improved the adaptive capacity of tomato plants to decrease Cd-induced damage. SeNPs induced more Cd in roots but not in shoots despite greater accumulation of selenium and sulfur in both tissues and high selenate influx. Additionally, SeNPs significantly increased thiol compounds, including glutathione, cysteine,

3D (x-y-t) Raman imaging of tomato fruit cuticle: Microchemistry during development.

The cuticle is a protective extracellular matrix that covers the above-ground epidermis of land plants. Here, we studied the cuticle of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) fruits in situ using confocal Raman microscopy. Microsections from cuticles isolated at different developmental stages were scanned to visualize cuticle components with a spatial resolution of 342 nm by univariate and multivariate data analysis. Three main components, cutin, polysaccharides, and aromatics, were identified, with the latter exhibiting the strongest Raman scattering intensity. Phenolic acids and flavonoids were di…

Persulfidation maintains cytosolic G6PDs activity through changing tetrameric structure and competing cysteine sulfur oxidation under salt stress in Arabidopsis and tomato.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenases (G6PDs) are essential regulators of cellular redox. Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) is a small gasotransmitter that improves plant adaptation to stress; however, its role in regulating G6PD oligomerization to resist oxidative stress remains unknown in plants. Persulfidation of cytosolic G6PDs was analyzed by mass spectrometry (MS). The structural change model of AtG6PD6 homooligomer was built by chemical cross-linking coupled with mass spectrometry (CXMS). We isolated AtG6PD6C159A and SlG6PDCC155A transgenic lines to confirm the in vivo function of persulfidated site

Development of axially chiral urazole scaffolds for antiplant virus applications against potato virus Y.

BACKGROUND: Potato virus Y (PVY) was first discovered by Smith in 1931 and is currently ranked as the fifth most significant plant virus. It can cause severe damage to plants from the family Solanaceae, which results in billions of dollars of economic loss worldwide every year. To discover new antiviral drugs, a class of multifunctional urazole derivatives bearing a stereogenic CN axis were synthesized with excellent optical purities for antiviral evaluations against PVY. RESULTS: The absolute configurations of the axially chiral compounds exhibited obvious distinctions in antiviral bioactiv

Repellency Potential of Tomato Herbivore-Induced Volatiles Against the Greenhouse Whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae).

The greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurode vaporariorum, is among the key pests of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) in sub-Saharan Africa with Tuta absoluta, spider mite, thrips, and fruitworms. To understand the interaction between the pest and the plant's herbivory-induced plant volatile (HIPVs), we investigated the repellency of four tomato cultivars (Kilele F1, Assila F1, Red Beauty F1, and Nemonneta F1) upon infestation by Trialeurode vaporariorum. We analyzed the behavioral response of T. vaporariorum to infested and uninfested tomato plants of these cultivars using olfactory bioassays followed b…

Identification and confirmation of key compounds causing cooked off-flavor in heat-treated tomato juice.

Cooked off-flavor produced by heat treatment greatly limited the acceptability of commercial tomato juice. To screen and identify the cooked off-flavor compounds, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MS-O), aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and odor activity value (OAV) calculation were applied simultaneously. The results showed that there were 17 aroma-active compounds in tomato juice samples. Among them, three newly formed sulfur-containing compounds (dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, and methional) and 1-octen-3-one,

A novel fluorescence sensor based on a tripodal carboxylic acid for detection and measurement of Cu2+ in tomato: Experimental and computational studies.

A tripod organic compound, (4,4',4''-[1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triyltris(oxy)] tribenzoic acid, TCPT), with donor triazine core and multiple fluorophore carboxylic motives, was prepared as an efficient ligand with high emission properties. The TCPT fluorescence emission properties as a chemical sensor were studied (λex = 370 nm) upon the addition of an appropriately diverse set of metal cations. The obtained results revealed the highly selective and efficient role of Cu2+ in quenching of TCPT, even with relevant interfering metal ions. The emission of TCPT was independent of the pH. The interactio

CRISPR-Cas9-mediated mutagenesis of the SlSRM1-like gene leads to abnormal leaf development in tomatoes.

BACKGROUND: Leaves, which are the most important organs of plants, can not only fix carbon sources through photosynthesis, but also absorb nutrients through transpiration. Leaf development directly determines the growth, flowering and fruiting of plants. There are many factors that affect leaf development, such as the growth environment, gene expression, and hormone synthesis. In this study, tomatoes were used to study the role of the transcription factor Solanum lycopersicum salt-related MYB1-like (SlSRM1-like) in the development of tomato leaves. RESULTS: Loss-of-function of the SlSRM1-like…

Grafting resulting in alleviating tomato plant oxidative damage caused by high levels of ofloxacin.

Antibiotic pollution has become a global problem threatening human health. Ofloxacin is one of the more widely used antibiotics, but reports on the reaction of plant to ofloxacin pollution are limited. In this study, using adversity-resistant (R), adversity-sensitive (S) and grafted plant S/R as models, we investigated the biological response of tomato to exogenous ofloxacin residues. The results showed that lower levels of ofloxacin treatment (5 mg L-1 and 10 mg L-1) promoted tomato growth, and 10 mg L-1 ofloxacin was the critical dose to stimulate growth among the different treatments. In add

A new Streptomyces scabies-infecting bacteriophage from Egypt with promising biocontrol traits.

Potato common scab caused by Streptomyces scabies is one of the most economically important diseases infecting potato. It reduces the quality of potato tubers, which subsequently decreases the tuber prices and causes significant economic losses for potato growers. Biological control using bacteriophages is a promising strategy for controlling this disease. In this study, a novel bacteriophage with high lytic efficacy against S. scabies was isolated from a potato field at El-Minya, Egypt, and was designated SscP1EGY. The phage has an icosahedral head of 55 nm and a short tail of 7.5 nm, typical

Environmental and economic assessment of food-packaging systems with a focus on food waste. Case study on tomato ketchup.

In this paper, a sustainability evaluation method for food-packaging systems is proposed. First, food waste due to poor emptiability was determined. Then, these quantities were included in life cycle assessments (LCA) and life cycle costing (value added, VA) of the products. Finally, LCA and VA results were combined using multi-criteria decision analysis, Technique for Order by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), in order to identify the most sustainable food packaging system. As a case study, four different ketchup products were examined. For ketchup in polypropylene bottles, FLW resulting

Unravelling GSNOR-Mediated S-Nitrosylation and Multiple Developmental Programs in Tomato Plants.

Nitric oxide (NO) impacts multiple developmental events and stress responses in plants. S-nitrosylation, regulated by S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR), is considered as an important route for NO bioactivity. However, genetic evidence for GSNOR-mediated plant development and S-nitrosylation remains elusive in crop species. Genetic and site-specific nitrosoproteomic approach was used to obtain GSNOR-mediated phenotype and S-nitrosylated network. Knockdown of GSNOR increased the endogenous NO level and S-nitrosylation, resulting in higher germination rate, inhibition of root and hypocotyl g

Salicylic Acid Is Involved in the Basal Resistance of Tomato Plants to Citrus Exocortis Viroid and Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus.

Tomato plants expressing the NahG transgene, which prevents accumulation of endogenous salicylic acid (SA), were used to study the importance of the SA signalling pathway in basal defence against Citrus Exocortis Viroid (CEVd) or Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV). The lack of SA accumulation in the CEVd- or TSWV-infected NahG tomato plants led to an early and dramatic disease phenotype, as compared to that observed in the corresponding parental Money Maker. Addition of acibenzolar-S-methyl, a benzothiadiazole (BTH), which activates the systemic acquired resistance pathway downstream of SA signa

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with solid-phase microextraction method for determination of methyl salicylate and other volatile compounds in leaves of Lycopersicon esculentum.

Methyl salicylate (MeSA) in many plants is a important signaling compound, which plays an important role in a pathogen-induced defense response. In this paper, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was developed for determination of MeSA and other volatile compounds in leaves of a tomato plant (Lycopersicon esculentum). Tomato leaves were ground under liquid nitrogen and sampled by HS-SPME, with a 100 microm polydimethylsiloxane fiber, and finally analyzed by GC-MS. Eighteen compounds in the leaves of tomato plant infested by tobacco

Isolation and characterization of an antibiotic produced by the scab disease-suppressive Streptomyces diastatochromogenes strain PonSSII.

An antibiotic produced by the scab disease-suppressive Streptomyces diastatochromogenes strain PonSSII has been isolated and partially characterized. The antibiotic is produced throughout culture growth, with maximum amounts accumulating in the broth when the culture is in the early stationary phase of growth. The activity declines within about 30 h after the culture enters stationary phase. Purification techniques included chromatography on Amberlite XAD-2, DEAE Sephadex and SP Sephadex in addition to C18 HPLC with an average yield of 75%. This antibiotic only inhibits pathogenic strains of S
