Recent strategies for aluminum production waste recovery: process, environmental impacts, and circular economy challenges.

The primary production of aluminum generates hazardous solid residues, which collectively present a critical challenge involving both environmental toxicity and strategic resource depletion. Current industry reliance on secure landfilling fails to mitigate long-term risks posed by leaching of fluorides, heavy metals, and cyanide. This approach results in significant economic loss by preventing the recovery of essential aluminum and fluorine feedstocks. The high Na/Al impurity ratio and complex chemical composition of this waste severely limit recovery, making the reclaimed compounds unsuitable

Real and perceived barriers to effective use of cataract surgical supplies.

INTRODUCTION: Cataract surgery, among the most common procedures worldwide, significantly contributes to climate change through both solid waste and air pollution, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions. Implementation faces hurdles including legal constraints and concerns about infection risks and malpractice. METHODS: This article examines federal and state regulatory structures around two key waste reduction strategies: reduction of multidose medications and distribution of partly-used operating room medication to patients post-surgery. RESULTS: We find little-to-no legit…

Recycling Fiber-Reinforced Polyamide Waste from the Automotive Industry: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of an Advanced Pyrolysis Process to Reclaim Glass Fibers and Valuable Chemicals.

The generation of pyrolysis liquids and gases with poor quality is a limiting factor for the development of the recycling process of fiber-reinforced plastic waste. In this article, the life cycle assessment (LCA) of an advanced two-step pyrolysis process to recycle glass fiber-reinforced polyamide waste is presented. First, the solid waste is pyrolyzed by heating up at 3 °C/min to 500 °C in a tank reactor. The generated volatiles are subsequently thermally cracked at 900 °C in a tubular packed bed reactor. The process is able to reclaim the glass fibers similarly to the conventional one react…

Recovery of Cembratrien-Diols from Waste Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) Flowers by Microwave-Assisted Deep Eutectic Solvent Extraction: Optimization, Separation, and In Vitro Bioactivity.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are novel solvents with physicochemical properties similar to those of ionic liquids, and they have attracted extensive attention for the extraction of bioactive compounds from different plant materials in the context of green chemistry and sustainable development. In this study, seven DESs with different polarities were explored as green extraction solvents for cembratrien-diols (CBT-diols) from waste tobacco flowers. The best solvent, DES-3 (choline chloride: lactic acid (1:3)), which outperformed conventional solvents (methanol, ethanol, and ethyl acetate), was

Migration and transformation of main components during perishable waste bio-drying process.

Bio-drying can significantly reduce the moisture content of waste. The factors, functional microorganisms, and the transformation of main components were investigated during bio-drying of perishable waste. This study provides a scientific basis for the improvement of the bio-drying process and the necessity for secondary pollutant control. Reaction temperature and microbial biomass were main factors during the bio-drying process. The ideal bio-drying conditions included an initial temperature above 20 °C, intermittent ventilation, and appropriate microbial inoculation. The main microorganisms

Muscle wasting in chronic kidney disease.

Loss of lean body mass is a relevant component of the cachexia, or protein energy wasting (PEW), syndrome. Reduced muscle mass seems to be the most solid criterion for the presence of cachexia/PEW in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and those with greater muscle mass loss have a higher risk of death. Children with CKD have many risk factors for lean mass and muscle wasting, including poor appetite, inflammation, growth hormone resistance, and metabolic acidosis. Mortality risks in patients with CKD increases as body mass index (BMI) and weight decreases. However, data regarding cach

Cisplatin-Induced Skeletal Muscle Dysfunction: Mechanisms and Counteracting Therapeutic Strategies.

Among the severe side effects induced by cisplatin chemotherapy, muscle wasting is the most relevant one. This effect is a major cause for a clinical decline of cancer patients, since it is a negative predictor of treatment outcome and associated to increased mortality. However, despite its toxicity even at low doses, cisplatin remains the first-line therapy for several types of solid tumors. Thus, effective pharmacological treatments counteracting or minimizing cisplatin-induced muscle wasting are urgently needed. The dissection of the molecular pathways responsible for cisplatin-induced musc

Environmental biotechnology: biotechnology solutions for a global environmental problem, hazardous chemical wastes.

Biotechnology has a growing place in the remediation of hazardous waste sites throughout the world, and especially in Asia where population density is high and land and fresh water are scarce. In-situ bioremediation has been demonstrated already to be highly effective for petroleum hydrocarbons (alkanes, aromatics, polychlorophenols) and organophosphate pesticides in soils and for gasoline by-products (benzene, toluene, xylene) and chlorinated solvents (trichloroethylene) in groundwater. Heavy metals and PCBs are not suitable for bioremediation. Environmental biotechnology includes solid-phase

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels in patients with HIV with wasting in South Asia.

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha is thought to play an important role in wasting; but TNF-alpha levels have not been consistently found to be high in AIDS wasting. We conducted this study to determine any correlation between TNF-alpha levels and wasting in HIV-positive patients in a developing country. TNF-alpha levels were measured in four groups of patients: Group 1, HIV/AIDS with wasting (n = 25); group 2, HIV/AIDS without wasting (n = 47); group 3, HIV-negative patients with tuberculosis with wasting (n = 25); and group 4, healthy controls (n = 25). Wasting was defined as a body bass inde

Suppression of arsenic trioxide dissolution by antimony substitution.

Roasting arsenopyrite during gold production generates hazardous arsenic trioxide roaster waste (ATRW). At the Giant Mine, Canada, > 20,000 tonnes ATRW were aerially dispersed while another 237,000 tonnes are buried. Arsenolite [As2O3] largely comprises ATRW, but minor elements may have substantial geochemical influence (e.g. Fe, Sb, Ca). To investigate controls on ATRW dissolution, we performed batch experiments on variable-composition Giant Mine samples. Following two weeks of anoxic reaction (21 and 4 ˚C), As2O3 dissolution (17.9 and 12.3 g L-1) only reached 72% and 73% of As2O3 solubility

Method Development for Enteric Virus Recovery from Primary Sludge.

Enteric viruses, such as poliovirus, are a leading cause of gastroenteritis, which causes 2-3 million deaths annually. Environmental surveillance of wastewater supplements clinical surveillance for monitoring enteric virus circulation. However, while many environmental surveillance methods require liquid samples, some at-risk locations utilize pit latrines with waste characterized by high solids content. This study's objective was to develop and evaluate enteric virus concentration protocols for high solids content samples. Two existing protocols were modified and tested using poliovirus type

CFD simulation of MSW combustion and SNCR in a commercial incinerator.

A CFD scheme was presented for modeling municipal solid waste (MSW) combustion in a moving-grate incinerator, including the in-bed burning of solid wastes, the out-of-bed burnout of gaseous volatiles, and the selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) process between urea (CO(NH2)2) and NOx. The in-bed calculations provided 2-D profiles of the gas-solid temperatures and the gas species concentrations along the bed length, which were then used as inlet conditions for the out-of-bed computations. The over-bed simulations provided the profiles of incident radiation heat flux on the top of bed. A 3-…

Green house gas emissions from composting and mechanical biological treatment.

In order to carry out life-cycle assessments as a basis for far-reaching decisions about environmentally sustainable waste treatment, it is important that the input data be reliable and sound. A comparison of the potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with each solid waste treatment option is essential. This paper addresses GHG emissions from controlled composting processes. Some important methodological prerequisites for proper measurement and data interpretation are described, and a common scale and dimension of emission data are proposed so that data from different studies can …

Recycling of Chrome-Tanned Leather and Its Utilization as Polymeric Materials and in Polymer-Based Composites: A Review.

Tanneries generate large amounts of solid and liquid wastes, which contain harmful chemical compounds in the environment, such as chromium, that is used in the tanning process. Until now, they have been almost completely dumped in landfills. Thus, finding eco-sustainable and innovative alternatives for the management and disposal of these wastes is becoming a huge challenge for tanneries and researchers around the world. In particular, the scientific and industrial communities have started using wastes to produce new materials exploiting the characteristics of leather, which are strongly conne

An investigation on the modelling of kinetics of thermal decomposition of hazardous mercury wastes.

The kinetics of mercury removal from solid wastes generated by chlor-alkali plants were studied. The reaction order and model-free method with an isoconversional approach were used to estimate the kinetic parameters and reaction mechanism that apply to the thermal decomposition of hazardous mercury wastes. As a first approach to the understanding of thermal decomposition for this type of systems (poly-disperse and multi-component), a novel scheme of six reactions was proposed to represent the behaviour of mercury compounds in the solid matrix during the treatment. An integration-optimization a…
