Tonic Electrical Stimulation of the Locus Coeruleus Enhances Cortical Sensory-Evoked Responses via Noradrenaline α1 and β Receptors.

The locus coeruleus (LC) neurons send extensive projections to the somatosensory cortex and release noradrenaline (NA) at synaptic terminals, which is thought to regulate the activation of sensory-related cells by acting on three types of receptors (α1, α2 and β). Although previous studies have examined the effects of LC stimulation on single-unit sensory neurons, their impact on somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and their temporal variations, as well as the specific roles of NA receptors, remain unclear. Herein, we investigated how SEPs are modulated by tonic LC stimulation at physiologi…

FMRI evidence of acupoints specificity in two adjacent acupoints.

Objectives. Acupoint specificity is the foundation of acupuncture treatment. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the acupoint specificity exists in two adjacent acupoints. Design and Setting. Two adjacent real acupoints, LR3 (Taichong) and ST44 (Neiting), and a nearby nonacupoint were selected. Thirty-three health volunteers were divided into three groups in random order, and each group only received acupuncture at one of the three points. While they received acupuncture, fMRI scan was performed. Results. The common cerebral activated areas responding to LR3 and ST44 included the c

Sensory inputs from whisking movements modify cortical whisker maps visualized with functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Rodents vary the frequency of whisking movements during exploratory and discriminatory behaviors. The effect of whisking frequency on whisker cortical maps was investigated by simulating whisking at physiological frequencies and imaging the whisker representations with blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging. Repetitive deflection of many right-sided whiskers at 10 Hz evoked a positive BOLD response that extended across contralateral primary somatosensory cortex (SI) and secondary somatosensory cortex (SII). In contrast, synchronous deflection of 2 adjacent wh…

The nature of tactile agnosia: a case study.

A chronic tactile agnosic with a small, MRI-documented left inferior parietal infarction underwent detailed somesthetic testing to assess (1) the acquisition of sensory data, (2) the manipulation of somatosensory percept and its association with previous knowledge, and (3) recognition occurring at a deeper taxonomic level. Results suggest that tactile agnosia can arise from faulty high-level perceptual processes, but that the ability to associate tactually defined objects and object parts with episodic memory can be preserved. Consistent with anatomic and physiologic studies in nonhuman primat

Isolated ataxia after pure left insular cortex infarction.

Acute insular infarction, due to its anatomic and functional complexity and wide connections, may present with various clinical presentations, such as somatosensory deficits, gustatory disorder, vestibular-like syndrome, cardiovascular disturbances, neuropsychological disorders, movement disorders, autonomic dysfunction and empathy impairment. However, there was no mention of the symptoms involving the cerebellar system in the related literature. We present a case of pure left insular cortex infarction with isolated truncal ataxia and demonstrate a crucial relationship between the left insular

Attention to painful cutaneous laser stimuli evokes directed functional connectivity between activity recorded directly from human pain-related cortical structures.

Our previous studies show that attention to painful cutaneous laser stimuli is associated with functional connectivity between human primary somatosensory cortex (SI), parasylvian cortex (PS), and medial frontal cortex (MF), which may constitute a pain network. However, the direction of functional connections within this network is unknown. We now test the hypothesis that activity recorded from the SI has a driver role, and a causal influence, with respect to activity recorded from PS and MF during attention to a laser. Local field potentials (LFP) were recorded from subdural grid electrodes i…

Repetitive wide-band cortical power in benign adult familial myoclonus epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Cortical tremor (CT), a rhythmic variant of cortical myoclonus (CM), is the hallmark of benign adult familial myoclonus epilepsy (BAFME), though the underlying mechanism of rhythmicity remains unproven. This study aimed to reveal the cortical rhythmic activity of CT using induced activity analysis for somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). METHODS: We investigated 46 SEP datasets from 23 patients (11 with BAFME, 12 with other CM) and 35 SEPs from 18 healthy controls. SEPs were recorded by 1.1-Hz stimuli at a sampling rate of 10,000 Hz. A short-time Fourier transform was applied to

Non-invasive evaluation of input-output characteristics of sensorimotor cerebral areas in healthy humans.

The topography of scalp SEPs to mixed and sensory median nerve (MN) and to musculocutaneous nerve stimulation was examined in 20 healthy subjects through multichannel (12-36) recording in a 50 msec post-stimulus epoch. MN-SEPs in both frontal leads were characterized by an N18, P20, N24, P28 complex showing maximal amplitude at contralateral parasagittal sites. This was sometimes partly obscured by a wide wave N30 having a fixed latency, but a steep amplitude gradient moving toward the scalp vertex. A P40 component followed, having longer peak latencies, moving the recording sites from contral

Distinct Neural Modes Carry Information About Attempted Grasp Timing and Force in the Sensorimotor Cortex.

Humans perform a variety of complex hand movements to manipulate objects, requiring precise control of changing forces. Understanding the ro … e their inability to execute movement and limited afferent input, the spiking activity in motor and somatosensory cortex was modulated with the task. Within the neural response, we identified independent neural modes-distinct patterns of population-level neural activity that were informative about both the timing and magnitude of the attempted force. Moreover, distinc …

Cause or effect: Altered brain and network activity in cervical dystonia is partially normalized by botulinum toxin treatment.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic cervical dystonia (CD) is a chronic movement disorder characterized by impressive clinical symptoms and the lack of c … d a shift towards normal brain function in the CD patients, especially within the motor cortex, the somatosensory cortex, and the basal ganglia. CONCLUSION: The changes in brain function and network activity in CD can be interpreted as related to the underlying cause, the effort to compensate or a mixture of both. NrCAM deletion causes topographic mistargeting of thalamocortical axons to the visual cortex and disrupts visual acuity.

NrCAM is a neural cell adhesion molecule of the L1 family that has been linked to autism spectrum disorders, a disease spectrum in which abnormal thalamocortical connectivity may contribute to visual processing defects. Here we show that NrCAM interaction with neuropilin-2 (Npn-2) is critical for semaphorin 3F (Sema3F)-induced guidance of thalamocortical axon subpopulations at the ventral telencephalon (VTe), an intermediate target for thalamic axon sorting. Genetic deletion of NrCAM or Npn-2 caused contingents of embryonic thalamic axons to misproject caudally in the VTe. The resultant thalam

Monosynaptic tracing maps brain-wide afferent oligodendrocyte precursor cell connectivity.

Neurons form bona fide synapses with oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs), but the circuit context of these neuron to OPC synapses remains incompletely understood. Using monosynaptically-restricted rabies virus tracing of OPC afferents, we identified extensive afferent synaptic inputs to OPCs residing in secondary motor cortex, corpus callosum, and primary somatosensory cortex of adult mice. These inputs primarily arise from functionally-interconnecting cortical areas and thalamic nuclei, illustrating that OPCs have strikingly comprehensive synaptic access to brain-wide projection networks. …
