Vowel Acoustics as Predictors of Speech Intelligibility in Dysarthria.

PURPOSE: This study sought to determine if alternative vowel space area (VSA) measures (i.e., novel trajectory-based measures: vowel space hull area and vowel space density) predicted speech intelligibility to the same extent as two traditional vowel measures (i.e., token-based measures: VSA and corner dispersion) in speakers with dysarthria. Additionally, this study examined if the strength of the relationship between acoustic vowel measures and intelligibility differed based on how intelligibility was measured (i.e., orthographic transcriptions [OTs] and visual analog scale [VAS] ratings).

Location and Volume of MRI Artifacts in Patients With Implanted Sphenopalatine Ganglion Neurostimulators for Treatment of Chronic Cluster Headache.

INTRODUCTION: Sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation (SPG-S) is an invasive form of neuromodulation by which a neurostimulator is implanted into the pterygopalatine fossa to treat refractory chronic cluster headache. The implant is MRI conditional, up to 3 T, however there is no clinical data on the shape, size, and location of the artifact produced by the implant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Records of patients with SPG-S were analyzed for postoperative cranial MRI scans. MRI and intraoperative CT scans for visualization of the implant were fused and volumetry was performed for both the implant and

Direction of single obstacle circumvention in middle-aged children.

When required to walk around a stationary object, adults use the location of the goal to set up their locomotor axis and obstacles presented along the locomotor axis will repel the individual towards the side that affords more space [1]. Research has yet to examine whether children can identify the locomotor axis and choose their paths accordingly. Therefore, the current study examined the factors that influence the direction in which children choose to deviate around a single obstacle and whether the presence or absence of a goal influences path selection and trajectory. Ten children (age: 7.

Does osteophytosis at the knee predict health-related quality of life decline? A 3-year follow-up of the ROAD study.

The objective of the present longitudinal study was to clarify whether osteophytosis and joint space narrowing predict quality of life (QOL) decline using a longitudinal population-based cohort of the Research on Osteoarthritis/osteoporosis Against Disability (ROAD) study. The present study analyzed 1,525 participants who completed the radiographic examination at baseline and questionnaires regarding QOL at a 3-year follow-up (546 men and 979 women; mean age, 67.0 ± 11.0 years). This study examined the associations of osteophyte area (OPA) and minimum joint space width (mJSW) in the medial com

The mid-term efficacy of intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections on joint structure: a nested case control study.

OBJECTIVE: Intra-articular (IA) injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) has been shown to relieve osteoarthritis (OA)-related pain and improve joint structure within a 1-year period. We examined the mid-term (2-year) efficacy of IA-HA in Japanese subjects by using a large-scale population-based cohort of the Research on Osteoarthritis/Osteoporosis Against Disability study. METHODS: We performed a nested case control study of 60 case control pairs matched for age (within 1 year), sex, Kellgren and Lawrence grade, and history of knee pain. The mean follow-up period after IA-HA series was 2.9 years in

Expressive and perceptual asymmetries of the resting face.

Lateral facial composites reveal the asymmetry of the resting face. In the current research, we created lateral composites of 30 resting faces, then had subjects compare the two composites of a face with a depiction of the whole face in either normal- or mirror-image. Results indicate that the side of the face in a subject's left visual hemi-space dominates facial recognition. The magnitude of this bias can be altered by priming tasks. It is a bias in facial perception, not memory.

The Use of 3D-Printed Space Maintainers: Clinical Outcomes and Parental Satisfaction.

Space maintainers (SMs) have traditionally been the treatment of choice for preventing space loss following the premature loss of primary teeth. The advent of digital dentistry has revolutionized dental care with the introduction of 3D-printed space maintainers. A systematic literature review was conducted to synthesize the existing evidence on the use of 3D-printed SMs, their clinical outcomes, and parental satisfaction. The literature review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. A predefined search strategy le

Leveraging bioinformatics approaches for drug repositioning in space radiation protection.

The health effects of space radiation, primarily Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs), on humans remain largely unknown, with potential cardiovascular consequences posing a significant threat to astronauts on long-duration spaceflight missions. Currently, there are no established pharmacological countermeasures for GCR exposure. Drug repositioning offers a promising strategy to accelerate pharmaceutical research in space medicine. This study leverages existing bioinformatics techniques to identify and prioritize potential drug candidates associated with proteomic perturbations following simulated GCR e

Astroimmunology: the effects of spaceflight and its associated stressors on the immune system.

As humans embark on longer and deeper missions into space, it is crucial to understand how spaceflight impacts the immune system. Decades of discoveries, bolstered by recent multiomic analyses, have identified key immune processes that are affected by the spaceflight environment. These findings form the foundations of the emerging field of 'astroimmunology'. Spaceflight stressors - such as microgravity and galactic cosmic radiation - and other mission-associated variables, including psychological stress and abnormal circadian rhythms, can disrupt or adversely affect immune cell biology. In add

Monitoring the daily variation of Sun-Earth magnetic fields using galactic cosmic rays.

The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) between the Sun and Earth is an extension of the solar magnetic field carried by the solar wind into interplanetary space. Monitoring variations in the IMF upstream of the Earth would provide very important information for the prediction of space weather effects, such as effects of solar storms and the solar wind, on human activity. In this study, the IMF between the Sun and Earth was measured daily for the first time using a cosmic-ray observatory. Cosmic rays mainly consist of charged particles that are deflected as they pass through a magnetic field.

From Chest Wall Resection to Medical Management: The Continued Saga of Parapneumonic Effusion Management and Future Directions.

Pleural space infections have been described since the time of Hippocrates and to this day remains a significant pathology. Every year in the USA approximately there are one million hospital admissions for pneumonia with 20%-40% associated with some form of pleural space infections leading to pleural effusions with increased morbidity and mortality. Often, management of these effusions mandate combination of medical treatment and surgical drainage with debridement and decortication. There has been a lot of ongoing research regarding the safety and efficacy of intrapleural fibrinolytics in the

Impact of postural variation on hand measurements: Three-dimensional anatomical analysis.

In this article, the impact of postural variations on hand anthropometry and distribution of skin strain ratios has been investigated. The literature suggests the glove fit directly affects hand functions. However, gloves currently manufactured based on a static posture failed to provide optimum fit. Workers often do not wear protective gloves due to discomfort caused by improper design, which increases the risk of hand injury. Full-color three-dimensional scans of the hands are captured with thirty healthy subjects (20 females, 10 males) to analyze the hand measurements and skin deformation w

Acute peripheral vestibular deficit increases redundancy in random number generation.

Unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit leads to broad cognitive difficulties and biases in spatial orientation. More specifically, vestibular patients typically show a spatial bias toward their affected ear in the subjective visual vertical, head and trunk orientation, fall tendency, and walking trajectory. By means of a random number generation task, we set out to investigate how an acute peripheral vestibular deficit affects the mental representation of numbers in space. Furthermore, the random number generation task allowed us to test if patients with peripheral vestibular deficit show ev

Analogy between training for dancers and problems of adjustment to microgravity: an evaluation of the subjective vertical in dancers.

"Moderne dance" (as opposed to a more academic or classical dance form) uses techniques from kinesiology, anatomy and improvization which are adapted to a cultural, technological and political environment. The function of a choreographic system is to take and give a measure of the world. This includes, with the present tendency of the evolution of culture, a new "naturalism" which seeks the secrets of the body. Dance movements express in terms of space the dimension fo the infinite. It gives somehow the measure of a world within which everything is relative. Except for the speed of light, time

Multidimensional Alternating Kernel Method for cortical layer segmentation in 3D reconstructed histology.

The neocortex of the brain can be divided into six layers each with a distinct cell composition and connectivity pattern. Recently, sensory deprivation, including congenital deafness, has been shown to alter cortical structure (e.g. the cortical thickness) of the feline auditory cortex with variable and inconsistent results. Thus, understanding these complex changes will require further study of the constituent cortical layers in three-dimensional space. Further progress crucially depends on the use of objective computational techniques that can reliably characterize spatial properties of the

[New developments in cartilage imaging].

Development of drugs able to modify the natural course of osteoarthritis is a major research objective. Imaging methods are needed to evaluate the effect of new medications in the experimental and clinical settings. Conventional radiographs are the gold-standard technique for routine imaging. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has transformed hyaline cartilage imaging by providing direct visualization without exposure to radiation. In addition, MRI can provide direct cartilage volumetry and tissue characterization for research purposes, using specific sequences. MRI can also give inform

What Are the Research Priorities for the Dyslexia Community in the United Kingdom and How Do They Align With Previous Research Funding?

Targeting research towards areas that matter to dyslexic people and their families is essential for improving dyslexic people's lives. However, we do not know what the dyslexia community's research priorities are and whether they align with current research funding. We categorised previous funding for dyslexia research in the United Kingdom and considered how this aligns with community research priorities, using multiple methods and a participatory approach. We identified that the vast majority (78%) of funding has been spent on research into biology, brain and cognition. Through seven focus g

Embodied Spatial Affordance: Spatial-Aware Affordance Learning for Embodied Navigation and Manipulation.

Embodied navigation and manipulation are fundamental capabilities for embodied agents operating in physical environments. A key challenge in this process is understanding the spatial context and the affordances of the environment, which involves recognizing how objects can be interacted with (object affordance) and identifying suitable locations for movement and object placement (free space affordance). While Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have shown promise in high-level task planning, their ability to translate reasoning into precise executable actions remains limited, particularly in image-b
