The chondrocranium at stage 23 (27-32 mm C.-R., 8 postovulatory weeks) was studied in detail to fill the descriptive gap between 7 and 9 weeks. Serial sections of ten embryos, all belonging to the same developmental stage, were investigated and compared. Graphic and Perspektomat reconstructions were made from three embryos. The chondrocranium forms a continuous mass of well-formed cartilage, which blends with early cartilage in the nasal, orbital, and otic regions, around the future foramen rotundum, and at the site of the parietal lamina. The chondrocranium and "membrane" bones cover a relati

Brown tumors are osteolytic bone lesions that occur as a result of persistent hyperparathyroidism. They usually appear late in the natural history of the disease and are currently very rare due to an earlier diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism. We present the case of a 53-year-old female with a 2-month history of bitemporal hemianopsia and diplopia. A computed tomography showed an osteolytic bone lesion that involved the sphenoid corpus and clivus. A biopsy was made and the histopathology result was consistent with a brown tumor. The aforementioned location is very infrequent to such tumo

We describe the archeological and imaging findings of a unique specimen (skull and mandible) with leontiasis ossea (LO) that is on display in the National Museum of Anthropology and History in Mexico City. The specimen shows diffuse and irregular periosteal bone proliferation, which produces a grossly nodular appearance involving the neurocranium and the facial skeleton. Plain radiography and helical computed tomography revealed generalized hyperostosis obliterating the maxillary and sphenoidal sinuses and 2 exuberant bony masses arising from the maxilla with encroachment of the anterior nasal

A 100-month retrospective review was undertaken to identify the population characteristics of patients with both facial and cranial fractures and to establish the relationships between them. A 4.4% incidence of cranial fractures was found in the 882 patients with facial fractures. These patients tended to be males (85%) between the ages of 16 and 30 years (54%) who were involved in motor vehicle accidents (64%). Patients with midfacial fractures predominated (70%), and these injuries were most frequently associated with fractures of the frontal (38%), sphenoid (24%), or temporal (22%) bones. N

The MacCune-Albright's syndrome as described by these authors in 1936 and 1937 is extremely rare if one considers the complete form consisting in the triad: café-au-lait spots, fibro-osseous dysplasia, endocrine disturbances. We report an additional case in a 5 year old girl with an precocious puberty. Within a 10 year follow up occurred a polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with pathologic bone fractures in cystic areas, and a right exophthalmos induced by a cyst of the large wing of the sphenoid bone. All these lesions led to orthopaedic and neural surgical procedures. The early puberty of central…

The lateral pterygoid plate is a key landmark within the infratemporal fossa, and its morphological variations influence surgical access to the foramen ovale. This study evaluated the morphometry of lateral pterygoid plate and its spatial relationships in 60 dry skulls. The specimens of skull were categorized into direct, lateral, removed, and medial types. Measurements included five sectional breadths, height, distances from lateral to the medial pterygoid plate, the anterior tubercle, and degree of lateral deflection. The specimens of skull classified as medial type had significant greater m

INTRODUCTION: The foramen ovale (FO) is present in the posterior part of the greater wing of sphenoid. A trauma or space-occupying lesion in this area would result in clinical manifestations due to compression of the structures passing through it. This study was undertaken because of the clinical significance of the FO in radiological and neurological procedures. The aim is to study the morphometry of the FO and its bilateral variations.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty adult dry human skulls of unknown age and sex were studied. The shape of the FO, presence of accessory foramina or abnormal bony

OBJECTIVE: The anterior clinoid process (ACP) is surrounded by nerves and vessels that, together, constitute an intricate anatomical structure with variations that challenges the performance of individualized anterior clinoidectomy in treating lesions with different extents of invasion. In the present study, we established a 6-surface system for the ACP based on anatomical landmarks and analyzed its value in guiding ACP drilling and resection of paraclinoid meningiomas.
METHODS: Using the anatomical characteristics of 10 dry skull specimens, we set 9 anatomical landmarks to delineate the ACP

The article reviews data on the anatomical and topographic features of the lateral wall in the context of performing orbital surgery and presents a description of the surgical areas of the lateral wall that are most important for increasing the volume of the orbit: the lacrimal keyhole, the sphenoid door jamb, and the basin of the inferior orbital fissure. Particular attention is given to the topographic anatomy of the sphenoid door jamb as the most promising area for orbital decompression and transorbital access to the skull base.

Our aim was to clarify the variations in the positional relationship between the base of the lateral plate of the pterygoid process and the foramen ovale (FO), which block inserted needles during percutaneous procedures to the FO usually used for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Ninety skulls were examined. The horizontal relationship between the FO and the posterior border of the base of the lateral plate of the pterygoid process was observed in an inferior view of the skull base. Skulls that showed injury to either the FO or the lateral plate of the pterygoid process on either side wer

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic transorbital approach (ETOA) has been proposed as a minimally invasive technique for the treatment of skull base lesi … yelid incision followed by orbital retraction, drilling of orbital roof, greater and lesser wing of sphenoid bone, and cutting of the meningo-orbital band. For the intradural stage, the brain tissue medial to the occipito-temporal gyrus was aspirated until the temporal horn was opened. The structures of MTL could be aspirated selectively in a subpial manner wit …

PURPOSE: The main objective of this study was to display the morphologic properties of the anterior clinoid process (ACP) in human fetuses i … terior according to fetuses probably due to postnatal development such as the pneumatization of the sphenoid bone. In this regard, for pediatric neurosurgeons to avoid iatrogenic injuries and to select appropriate surgical approaches, further studies conducted on the attachment of OS relative to ACP in children are needed.

BACKGROUND: Lesions of the upper parapharyngeal space (UPPS) present a surgical challenge. The objective of this study was to ascertain the feasibility of a novel technique of modified transpterygoid approach to the UPPS.
METHODS: Six fresh cadaveric specimens (12 sides) were dissected, developing a technique that includes en bloc mobilization of the lateral pterygoid plate and muscle to access the UPPS.
RESULTS: Following an endoscopic Denker's approach and the removal of posterolateral wall of the antrum, the lateral pterygoid plate was detached from the pterygoid process. Subsequently, th

A new method was developed to avoid the risk of injury to the cranial nerves and vessels during intradural bone resection at the paraclinoid region and porus acusticus. The semicircular dural flap is pulled out with a thread over the anterior clinoid process or the porus acusticus. The flap is extended over the underlying structures with a tapered spatula to create adequate space for drilling the bone. The site for drilling was adequately exposed and bone was drilled away smoothly without damaging the underlying vessels and nerves in 10 patients with paraclinoid aneurysms and in seven patients

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the clipping of middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms using the endoscopic transorbital approach (ETOA) with cadavers and in clinical cases to clarify which patients are good candidates based on preoperative imaging data.
METHODS: To determine the indications for MCA clipping using an ETOA with superior-lateral orbital rim osteotomy, 10 sides of 5 cadavers were investigated. The clippable range, defined as the horizontal range, and exposure of the middle cranial fossa base, defined as the vertical extent area, were evaluated. To assess the ETOA trajectory in t
