Subclinical hypothyroidism during potassium iodide therapy for lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis.

This report describes a high school football player with an unusual ulcerative lesion on the upper leg that was treated initially as pyoderma gangrenosum, but later proved to be due to Sporothrix schenckii. His treatment with potassium iodide solution was complicated by the occurrence of subclinical hypothyroidism.

Disseminated sporotrichosis in a cat.

Sporothrix (Sporotrichum) schenckii was identified as the causative agent of a large pyogranulomatous lesion on the right forepaw of a cat. Organisms also were observed in axillary lymph nodes of the affected forelimb and in the lungs and liver of the cat. The agent was transmitted to another domestic cat and to mice.

A rare case of sporotrichosis in a patient with late latent syphilis and diabetes mellitus: immunological aspects of sporotrichosis.

Sporotrichosis, caused by Sporothrix schenckii, typically infects humans through skin trauma, leading to nodules or ulcers that complicate diagnosis. Rare forms, such as disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis, occur more often in immunosuppressed patients or those with diabetes or alcohol use disorder. We report a 49-year-old male patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed painful ulcerations on his lower limbs following a cat scratch. A deep tissue biopsy confirmed mycelial hyphae, and culture identified Sporothrix spp. A biopsy from a left thigh lesion revealed syphilitic exanthem fi…

Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Sporotrichosis in a Reference Center of Uruguay.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a fungal implantation disease of subacute/ chronic course caused by species of the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix spp. This infection usually develops after traumatic inoculation of contaminated soil, plants or organic material contaminated by Sporothrix spp. conidia into skin or mucosa. The objective of this work is to contribute to the knowledge of sporotrichosis in Uruguay by providing a report of a series of cases diagnosed in a reference center. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of cases of sporotrichosi…

Erysipeloid sporotrichosis in a woman with Cushing's disease.

A woman presented with a swollen red leg of 2 weeks' duration. Culture of the skin biopsy specimen confirmed this to be an infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii. Systemic evaluation led to the diagnosis of Cushing's disease and explained the unusual morphology. Treatment-related complications are also discussed.

Sporotrichosis: an unusual disseminated cutaneous case and a fatal pulmonary case.

Two unusual cases of sporotrichosis are presented. One patient had disseminated vesicular skin lesions which yielded Sporothrix schenckii on culture. The other, with extensive pulmonary sporotrichosis, continued to have sputum cultures positive for S schenckii during three years of intensive chemotherapy.

Disseminated sporotrichosis with orbital osteomyelitis in a child: a case report.

Sporotrichosis is an infection caused by fungi of the Sporothrix complex that can affect both humans and animals. In most cases, it is a benign infection limited to the skin and subcutaneous tissue, rarely disseminating to other organs with systemic involvement. Diagnosis is based on clinical data, epidemiological data, and laboratory tests, with culture being considered the gold standard. The disease generally has a good prognosis and is usually resolved with appropriate antifungal treatment. This case report describes an atypical presentation of sporotrichosis with suppurative nodules and or…

Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis: A case report from southeastern China and review of the literature.

RATIONALE: Sporotrichosis is a dermatomycosis caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii sensu lato. The traditional gold standard for the definitive diagnosis of the disease is fungal culture. Our case describes the patient diagnosed lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis through the metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) quickly. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 53-year-old male presented with protracted multiple ulcerated lesions. The pathological analysis of his skin biopsy specimen was inflammatory reaction, routine hematological and biochemistry examinations, the imaging of heart, lung and s…

An Outbreak of Lymphocutaneous Sporotrichosis among Mine-Workers in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The largest outbreak of sporotrichosis occurred between 1938 and 1947 in the gold mines of Witwatersrand in South Africa. Here, … -healed lymphocutaneous lesions. Environmental samples were collected from underground mine levels. Sporothrix isolates were identified by sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal gene and the nuclear calmodulin gene. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Of 87 male miners, 81 (93%) were interviewed and examined, of whom 29 (36%) had skin lesions …

Successful treatment of nasal sporotrichosis in a dog.

Sporotrichosis is an uncommon mycosis of dogs caused by Sporothrix schenckii. This report details the diagnosis and treatment of intranasal sporotrichosis in a dog presented for a loss of smell, sneezing, and nasal congestion. Following 6 months of itraconazole treatment, a computed tomography scan showed a complete resolution of previously identified abnormalities.

Ocular and concomitant cutaneous sporotrichosis.

We report here the case of a 12-year-old girl with concomitant cutaneous and ocular sporotrichosis. Sporothrix schenckii was isolated from skin lesions and aqueous humour. The difficulty in the diagnosis and treatment of this form of mycosis is discussed and the data are compared with those published in the few reports available in the literature.

Laboratory-acquired sporotrichosis.

A case of laboratory-acquired sporotrichosis is described that was associated with research activities involving isolates of Sporothrix schenckii from the 1988 sporotrichosis epidemic in the USA. Infection occurred in the absence of apparent trauma or other predisposing factors. The possibility that S. schenckii can invade healthy and intact skin is suggested.

[Disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis as the initial manifestation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome--case report].

The authors report a case of disseminated cutaneous infection with Sporothrix schenckii in a previously asymptomatic HIV-infected 30 year-old man. Extensive cutaneous involvement was observed with suppurative collections and ulcerations. The agent was isolated in culture. Treatment with liposomal amphotericin B proved to be effective.

Cutaneous sporotrichosis presenting as a keratoacanthoma.

Sporothrix schenckii is a ubiquitous dimorphic fungus with a variety of clinical presentations, including imitation of other diseases such as pyoderma, rosacea, and pyoderma gangrenosum. A case in which sporotrichosis appeared as a keratoacanthoma-like nodule on the lower lip of a young woman is presented, with treatment considerations and diagnostic pitfalls.
