Lower-extremity injuries are common among dancers and cause significant absences from rehearsals and performances. For this study of lower-extremity injuries in 101 ballet and 47 modern dance students, injuries requiring medical attention sustained over 1 academic year were associated with the following data obtained at the beginning of the school year: ankle flexibility, sex, dance discipline, previous injury, body mass index, and years of training. Eighty-three of the 148 students (age range, 12 to 28 years) reported prior lower-limb injuries, the most common being ankle sprains (28% of all

The role that the secondary gain of work-related back pain plays in the length of disability is an issue that has been debated for years without absolute resolution. This article compares the disability period of lumbar sprain/strain and operated back cases in employees injured on duty and off duty. The patients injured on duty had a statistically significantly longer period of disability than those injured off duty, even when the cases were matched for gender and type of injury.

In 1993 there was an estimated 12.6 million in-line skaters in the US. In-line skating is popular because of its affordability and its exercise and recreational value. The main risk factors for injury include speed, obstacles and hard surfaces. Using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System in US hospitals, 31,000 skaters were reported injured over a 12 month period. Fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains and avulsion made up 67% of all injuries. It is recommended that skaters wear protection equipment including, helmet, wrist guards, knee-pads and elbow-pads. Although head injuri

This article summarizes the current evidence and expert opinion on making return-to-play decisions after cervical spine injuries. Injuries discussed include fractures, central cord neuropraxia, stringers, disc herniations, strains, sprains, and instability. Each of these injuries may be complicated by coexistence of other conditions making return-to-play decisions more complicated. The congenital, developmental, and disease processes discussed include spear tackler's spine, congenital and developmental stenosis, Klippel-Feil syndrome, odontoid abnormalities, rheumatoid arthritis, spina bifida,

This epidemiologic survey of the literature on the factors contributing to the high number of high school football injuries consolidates the current information on the characteristics and risk factors associated with these injuries. To reduce the incidence of knee sprains and strains, the most common injuries to this population, the following preventive recommendations are presented: 1) optimum maintenance of playing fields; 2) use of the soccer-style shoe; 3) noncontact and controlled activities in practice sessions; and 4) increased vigilance over technique during injury-prone preseason prac…

There is a distinct difference between ballet injuries and sports injuries in general, and the sports medicine physician needs to study the technique of dance and the specific injuries that it may produce in order to treat dancers effectively. In Australia, which is typical of other countries where ballet is performed, ballet injuries include strained lumbar muscles, sprained ankle, Achilles tendinitis, clicking hip, jumper's knee, chondromalacia, stress fractures, patellar subluxation, and other knee and tendon problems.

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale L.) has been used over many centuries as a medicinal plant. In particular, the use of the root has a longstanding tradition. Today, several randomised controlled trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety. Comfrey root extract has been used for the topical treatment of painful muscle and joint complaints. It is clinically proven to relieve pain, inflammation and swelling of muscles and joints in the case of degenerative arthritis, acute myalgia in the back, sprains, contusions and strains after sports injuries and accidents, also in children aged 3 years and

From a sample of 849 adolescents studied at age 15, 429 had been involved in 657 separate incidents, which resulted in 705 acute injuries requiring medical attention during their 14th and 15th years of life. The most common injuries were sprains, strains, fractures and lacerations, and the most common body site was the finger. The majority of injuries were of minor severity. Striking against an object or person was the most common incident resulting in injury, followed by being struck by an object or person, and overexertion or strenuous movement. Approximately half of the injuries were incurr

Closed modeling methods for lateral ankle sprain (ALAS) avoid surgical drawbacks but lack standardization due to reliance on the operator's subjective force, leading to variable outcomes. This study aimed to refine a closed ALAS rat model by quantifying manipulation parameters and establishing optimal ranges for different injury grades. Ninety rats were randomly assigned to groups receiving manual ankle inversion under different combinations of force (0-8 N or 8-16 N) and plantar flexion angle (100°-130° or 130°-160°), with control groups. A flexible thin-film pressure sensor and a goniometer

IMPORTANCE: Transferring patients to other hospitals because of inpatient saturation or need for higher levels of care was often challenging during the early waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding how transfer patterns evolved over time and amid hospital overcrowding could inform future care delivery and load balancing efforts.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate trends in outgoing transfers at overall and caseload-strained hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic vs prepandemic times.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study used data for adult patients at continuously rep

BACKGROUND: Despite the high incidence of ankle sprains, the ideal treatment is controversial and a significant percentage of patients who have suffered an ankle sprain never fully recover. Even professional athletes are affected by this post-traumatic complication. There is strong evidence that permanent impairment after an ankle injury is often due to an inadequate rehabilitation and training program and too early return to sport.
THERAPY AND REHABILITATION: Therefore, athletes should start a criteria-based rehabilitation after ankle sprain and gradually progress through the programmed acti

Ankle microinstability results from the superior fascicle of anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) injury and is a potential cause of chronic pain and disability after an ankle sprain. Ankle microinstability is usually asymptomatic. When symptoms appear, patients describe a subjective ankle instability feeling, recurrent symptomatic ankle sprains, anterolateral pain, or a combination of them. A subtle anterior drawer test can usually be observed, with no talar tilt. Ankle microinstability should be initially treated conservatively. If this fails, and because superior fascicle of ATFL is an intr

Lateral ankle ligament complex injuries are most commonly managed nonoperatively. If no improvements have been made following conservative management, surgical intervention is warranted. Concerns have been raised regarding complication rates following open and traditional arthroscopic anatomical repair. In-office needle arthroscopic anterior talo-fibular ligament repair provides a minimally invasive arthroscopic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability. The limited soft tissue trauma facilitates rapid return to daily and sporting activities making this an at

A literature search was conducted to systematically review and meta-analyze time-loss and recurrence rate of lateral ankle sprains (LAS) in male professional football players. Six electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PEDRO, CINAHL, and Cochrane) were searched independently, separately both for time-loss and recurrence from inception until April 30, 2021. In addition, reference lists were screened manually to find additional literature. Cohort studies, case reports, case-control studies and RCT in English language of male professional football players (aged more than 16 years)

BACKGROUND: Tactical populations, such as military, firefighter and law enforcement populations, are known to suffer a relatively high number of musculoskeletal injuries, with the lower extremity of notable concern. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to determine the profile of lower extremity musculoskeletal injuries within a state police agency.
METHODS: Injury data were collected by an Australian state police force over a 7-year period (2009-2016) and records not meeting the definition for lower extremity musculoskeletal injury were excluded. Statistical analyses were descripti
