Anti-DNA antibodies and circulating immune complexes (C1q-IgG) in recurrent aphtous stomatitis.

Anti-DNA antibodies and circulating immune complexes (C1q-IgG) in sera from 50 patients with minor aphtae at the moment of study and 50 healthy controls, were determined. The obtained results were correlated with chronological and clinical parameters of the disease. Our findings show a greater number of patients than controls with higher values of anti-DNA antibodies. The time from the last active stage of the disease conditioned the anti-DNA antibody levels (p < 0.001). However, no significant differences among the number of recurrences in a year or the number of lesions in a ulcerative stage

[Detection of herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus and cytomegalovirus in aphthous stomatitis].

Attempts were made to demonstrate herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and type 2, varicella zoster virus (VZV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) in specimens obtained from aphthous ulceration lesions by the immunofluorescent method using fluorescein-labeled monoclonal antibodies. HSV-1 and VZV were detected in 2 and 4 out of 30 patients, respectively. Although almost all viruses that can infect the oral cavity could occasionally cause stomatitis, neither HSV-2 nor CMV was not found in this study. VZV was detected in 1 out of 8 patients with recurrent aphthous ulceration. After treatment with acyclovir, …

Matrix metalloproteinase-guided targeting of vesicular stomatitis virus to tumors following systemic administration.

The lack of tumor-specific targeting by oncolytic viruses (OVs) restricts their therapeutic potential. Here, we report a "cap-linker" strategy to modify the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) glycoprotein (G protein, VSV-GIN). The modified VSV (Pro-VSVIN) loses its ability to infect cells until present in the tumor microenvironment, where the linker is cleaved by tumor-enriched matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). When Pro-VSVIN is armed with a single-chain IL-12 (Pro-VSVIN-IL-12) and systemically injected into MC38 tumor-bearing mice, Pro-VSVIN-IL-12 eradicates established tumors while avoiding sy…

Antifungal Susceptibility Assessment of Candida Isolates from Denture Stomatitis Patients to Azole Drugs.

BACKGROUND: Denture stomatitis is a common inflammatory condition among removable denture wearers, predominantly associated with Candida species colonization. Azole antifungal agents remain the mainstay of therapy; however, emerging resistance threatens clinical outcomes. METHODS: A cross-sectional laboratory-based study was conducted on 80 denture stomatitis patients. Oral swabs from palatal mucosa and denture-fitting surfaces were cultured, and Candida species were identified using phenotypic methods and CHROMagar. Antifungal susceptibility to fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, and vo…

Oncolytic Effects of S89K Matrix Protein of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus in Cervical Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Oncolytic viruses are currently the subject of cancer treatment research. Unlike other viruses, they can target tumor cells while avoiding healthy ones. The vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) has the ability to kill tumor cells through one of two different apoptotic pathways, depending on which cell line is being studied. Even when no other viral components are present, the VSV matrix protein can induce cell death in HeLa cells through apoptosis. The purpose of this research was to examine the similarities and differences in the induction of cell death by native and mutant VSV matrix…

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis, oxidative stress, and ischemia modified albumin: A cross-sectional study.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is an inflammatory disease characterized by painful ulcers on the oral mucosa. Oxidative stress is held responsible for the pathogenesis of this disease of unknown etiology. In oxidative stress, the balance between oxidant-antioxidant substances changes in favor of the oxidative side. Ischaemia modified albumin (IMA) is a new type of albumin. It occurs as a result of factors such as ischemic attacks and oxidative stress. The aim of the study was to compare IMA levels in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis with healthy volunteers and to investigate whether …

Atypical Presentation of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia Stomatitis Post COVID-19 in an Immunocompetent Adolescent.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) is a rare, multi-drug-resistant opportunistic bacteria that typically causes serious infections in immunocompromised and hospitalized patients, often leading to fatal pneumonia or bacteremia. We present the case of a healthy 15-year-old immunocompetent female who developed severe oral ulcers due to S. maltophilia following a recent COVID-19 infection. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of S. maltophilia manifesting in this manner after COVID-19. Scrapes from the oral lesions were collected and cultured, confirming the infection. The C

Vesicular Stomatitis Virus-Based Epstein-Barr Virus Vaccines Elicit Strong Protective Immune Responses.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the first identified human tumor virus, is etiologically associated with various kinds of malignant and benign diseases, accounting for 265,000 cancer incident cases and 164,000 cancer deaths in 2017. EBV prophylactic vaccine development has been gp350 centered for several decades. However, clinical studies show that gp350-centered vaccines fail to prevent EBV infection. Advances in the EBV infection mechanisms shed light on gB and gHgL, the two key components of the infection apparatus. In this study, for the first time, we utilized recombinant vesicular stomatitis v…

Common genetic susceptibility loci link PFAPA syndrome, Behçet's disease, and recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome is the most common periodic fever syndrome in children. The disease appears to cluster in families, but the pathogenesis is unknown. We queried two European-American cohorts and one Turkish cohort (total n = 231) of individuals with PFAPA for common variants previously associated with two other oropharyngeal ulcerative disorders, Behçet's disease and recurrent aphthous stomatitis. In a metaanalysis, we found that a variant upstream of IL12A (rs17753641) is strongly associated with PFAPA (OR 2.13, P = 6 × 1…

Healthy lifestyle habits benefit remission of recurrent aphthous stomatitis and RAS type ulceration.

In a clinical setting, it is not practical to separate recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) from RAS-type ulceration in every case, so both conditions have been considered together for the purpose of this article. Due to the lack of consistently effective therapeutic options for RAS, other approaches to treat the disease are considered here, beginning with an analysis of possible aetiological factors. The aetiology of RAS, the most common mucosal disease, remains undefined thus far. A few researchers have proposed psychological disorders as a major factor impacting RAS. Some systemic diseases a…
