A patient with a ruptured intracranial teratoma is presented. The distinctive imaging and neuroendoscopic findings of mobile fatty or oily globules in the subarachnoid or ventricular space are described. Fat suppression magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MRI performed with the patient prone was helpful in distinguishing tumour tissue from floating oil.

Intracranial aneurysms commonly present with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Rarely, they may attain a large size and manifest exclusively as intracranial space-taking lesions. We have collected a series of 48 cases of large aneurysms; 47 of them have been previously unpublished. To our knowledge, this is the largest series on this subject.

OBJECTIVES: Following translabyrinthine craniotomy the temporal bone defect is commonly obliterated using a free autologous fat graft. In th … USIONS: This study suggests that free fat placed in temporal bone defects commonly migrate into the subarachnoid space and subsequently move around in these spaces. This is not associated with any complications such as hydrocephalus, meningitis or prolonged postoperative headache.

We developed a new method for introducing drugs into the basal cistern of rabbits. With minimal surgical invasion, we used either the opening of the craniopharyngeal duct to access the chiasmatic cistern or the suture between the basisphenoid and basioccipital bones to access the interpeduncular cistern. With our method, 0.5 ml contrast medium injected into three rabbits was determined roentgenographically to remain in the basal cistern; histologically, all the brain tissue remained intact. Intracisternal injection of 0.5 ml physiological saline into five rabbits had no effect on the cardiovas

STUDY DESIGN: Case description.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient with a recurrent primary spinal subarachnoid neurocysticercosis (NCC) that was successfully treated with surgical decompression and medical therapy at our center.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spinal subarachnoid NCC is thought to be the secondary result from larval migration through the ventricular system into the spinal subarachnoid space. However, this entity can develop as a primary infection through blood stream or direct larval migration. It can result in high recurrence and severe neurologic morbidity if it is not treated …

This report describes a suppurative meningitis in a young cynomolgus. The animal had neutrophil aggregation in the subarachnoid space and hemorrhage in bilateral adrenal glands. Staphylococcus was identified by FISH in brain. To our knowledge, this is the first case of staphylococcal meningitis with Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome in a cynomolgus monkey.

A case of hemangioma calcificans is presented. On CT scan, the tumor shows no mass effect but is accompanied by circumscribed low density which is deemed to indicate brain atrophy and an enlarged subarachnoid space. A case of this tumor surrounded by peritumoral brain atrophy has not been reported before.

Meningitis is an infectious disease commonly arising from a bacterial etiology. The rapid progression of morbidity and mortality due to bact … en cerebrospinal fluid and extracellular fluid occurs at the VRS, with subsequent drainage into the subarachnoid space. Because the VRS is continuous with the subpial space, a more direct route to the meninges is facilitated. The involvement of the VRS may have profound implications on the pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies: (1) nasopharyngeal colonization; (2) …

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral vasospasm in patients after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) continues to be a major source of morbidity despite significant clinical and basic science research. The removal of blood and its degradation products from the subarachnoid space through prophylactic lumbar drainage (LD) is a favorable option. However, several studies have delivered conflicting conclusions on its efficacy after aSAH.
METHODS: Systematic searches of Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were performed. The primary outcome was a good functional outcome (mod…

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is a rare benign tumor that is usually located in the superficial cerebral hemisphere. Most reports of PXAs have included only a single case or small series. Therefore, the data with respect to the natural history of this tumor are fragmentary. We report a case of a PXA in the unusual location of the right lateral ventricle with extensive subarachnoid dissemination. To our knowledge, this is a rare case of PXA in the lateral ventricle. In addition, extensive subarachnoid space dissemination of this distinctly benign type of glioma is exceedingly rare. In our…

Tuberculous meningitis arises from the discharge of bacilli from a subjacent caseous focus into the subarachnoid space. Meningeal involvement is most marked at the base of the brain. The clinical spectrum is very broad and the outcome of therapy depends mainly on the stage of disease at the time treatment is instituted.

Transmission electron microscopy of the middle cerebral artery from cats exposed to subarachnoid injection of blood 3 and 7 days before, showed several damage of the vascular ultrastructure. The intima was thickened with swelling and vacuolization of endothelial cells, with a plump appearance and disruption of tight junctions. The cellular surface was corrugated and the subendothelial space contained proliferating and vacuolated smooth muscle cells capped by elastin and collagen fibres. The internal elastic lamina was also corrugated and disrupted. The adventitial changes were axonic cytoplasm

The results suggest that the injection of blood into the subarachnoid space does not produce significant structural changes, but that the primary stimulus for the initiation of such pathologic events is closely tied to vessel rupture.

Unexpected intracranial foreign materials may pose a diagnostic dilemma. We present a case of a gunshot wound resulting in severe orbital trauma and open-globe injury. The patient was treated with vitreoretinal surgery and intravitreous perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) injection. Postoperative head computed tomography exam demonstrated migration of PFCL into the intracranial subarachnoid space.

Lytic lesions of the skull due to cysticercosis are described. Encysted larvae in the subarachnoid space eroded the inner table of the skull in a 10-year-old Guatemalan male. In an area with endemic cysticercosis infections, this diagnosis should be considered when round, lytic defects are demonstrated in a skull radiograph.

Scanning electron microscopy of the caudal end of the roof of the fourth cerebral ventricle in four amphibian species shows that numerous pores occur between the ependymal cells. These pores have diameters ranging from 5--100 micron; they permit bluk flow of cerebrospinal fluid out of the ventricular system into the subarachnoid space.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces include ventricles and cerebral and spinal subarachnoid spaces. CSF motion is a combined effect of CSF production rate and superimposed cardiac pulsations. Knowledge of CSF dynamics has benefited considerably from the development of phase-contrast (PC) MRI. There are several disorders such as communicating and non-communicating hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, syringomyelic cyst and arachnoid cyst that can change the CSF dynamics. The aims of this pictorial review are to outline the PC MRI technique, CSF physiology and cerebrospinal space anatomy, to describ…

Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH) is a rare occurrence in the temporal lobe, and its coexistence with other intracranial bleeding types such as subdural hemorrhage (SDH) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is infrequently documented. Typically, SICH is managed conservatively without surgical intervention. In this case report, we present an unusual case of SICH in the temporal lobe, characterized by bleeding extending beyond the brain parenchyma into the subarachnoid and subdural spaces. Our approach involved tubular hematoma evacuation (surgical approach). Literature reports propose th
