Previous research has considered event-related potentials (ERPs) in relation to liability for alcohol and other substance use. This study explored ERPs in preadolescent boys at elevated risk for substance use due to paternal history of substance abuse or dependence. Sons (age 10-12) of fathers with an alcohol-use disorder (ALC, n = 29) were matched by age, IQ, education and parental alcohol use with sons of fathers with a polysubstance abuse or dependence diagnosis (POLY, n = 37). These two groups were matched with a low-risk comparison group (LOW, n = 29) of boys whose fathers had no substanc

BACKGROUND: Globally, there is a concerning surge in the prevalence of substance use among adolescents and children, creating a substantial public health problem. Despite the magnitude of this issue, accessing healthcare explicitly for substance use remains challenging, even though many substance users frequently visit healthcare institutions for other health-related issues. To address this gap, proactive screening for substance use disorders has emerged as a critical strategy for identifying and engaging patients at risk of substance use. The purpose of this study was to investigate the preva

The United States continues to suffer a drug overdose crisis that has resulted in over 100 000 deaths annually since 2021. Despite decades of attention, estimates of the prevalence of drug use at the spatiotemporal resolutions necessary for resource allocation and intervention evaluation are lacking. Current approaches for measuring the prevalence of drug use, such as population surveys, capture-recapture, and multiplier methods, have significant limitations. In a recent article, Santaella-Tenorio et al (Am J Epidemiol. 2024;193(7):959-967) used a novel joint bayesian spatiotemporal modeling a

Background: The synchronized disbursement of income assistance payments is associated with increased drug-related harms and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment interruptions. Desynchronizing and splitting these payments can mitigate escalations in drug use, suggesting that downstream effects on SUD treatment may be impacted as well. Objectives: To understand the effect of desynchronizing and splitting income assistance payments on treatment patterns, including adherence to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD).Methods: Data came from The Impact of Alternative Social Assistance on Drug R

The Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital sees medical and surgical inpatients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and conditions. During their twice-weekly rounds, Dr Stern and other members of the Consultation Service discuss diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients with complex medical or surgical problems who also demonstrate psychiatric symptoms or conditions. These discussions have given rise to rounds reports that will prove useful for clinicians practicing at the interface of medicine and psychiatry.

BACKGROUND: Watershed infarcts (WIs) are a distinct type of stroke with a varying clinical presentation that affects the border areas between the territories of two cerebral arteries and are typically associated with hemodynamic impairment and internal carotid artery stenosis. However, there is a paucity of data concerning its association with the history of recreational substance and drug abuse.
METHODS/CASE REPORT: This case report presents a unique instance of bilateral internal watershed infarcts in a 23-year-old male with a history of polysubstance abuse, including methadone and cocaine.
