Effects of intraoral prosthetics on swallowing in patients with oral cancer.

The swallowing patterns of four patients with oral cancer with intraoral palate reshaping/lowering protheses were studied with and without their prostheses 3 months postoperatively. The prostheses resulted in improved swallow efficiency, increased duration of tongue contact to the pharyngeal wall, and improved speed of movement of the bolus from the valleculae to the pyriform sinus. These results emphasize the effects of the tongue on the pharyngeal as well as oral stage of the swallow.

Treatment of severe microstomia caused by swallowing of caustic soda.

Treatment of severe microstomia caused by swallowing of caustic soda is presented. The oral cavity was severely constricted because of mucosal adhesions. We used a free forearm flap for reconstruction of the oral cavity and vermilion flaps at the oral commissure, with satisfactory results. A technique is presented, and the problems with respect to the reconstruction of the oral cavity are discussed.

Objective measures of swallowing in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome.

Primary Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disorder primarily affecting salivary and lacrimal glands. Durational measures of the oral … each of the two conditions. Moreover, unlike normals, over 40% of the patients with SS produced WB swallows that were longer than their BA swallows. For further analyses, patients with SS were classified into two groups based on the difference in duration between their BA and WB swallows. These two groups differed from each other on clinical evaluations o …

Examination of swallowing after total laryngectomy using manofluorography.

Investigation of postlaryngectomy dysphagia is usually limited to the standard barium swallow. Manofluorography (mano, manometry; fluoro, videofluoroscopy; graphy, picture) is a new technique that permits analysis of simultaneous manometry and videofluoroscopy of deglutition. Manofluorography provides more detailed analysis of the swallowing dynamics during the pharyngeal stage of deglutition than either barium studies or manometry used alone. This study uses manofluorography to examine swallowing in two patient groups, total laryngectomees and total laryngectomees with tongue impairment, to a

Normal erect swallowing. Normal function and incidence of variations.

Of 871 candidates presenting for upper gastrointestinal examinations, 16 met the rigorous criteria established for selecting asymptomatic normal volunteers. Frame-by-frame evaluation of their videorecorded pharyngeal swallow confirmed many observations made previously utilizing cine recording at much higher radiation dosages. In addition, new observations were made: the nasopharynx may not occlude until the bolus is entirely within the pharynx; air mixes with the bolus if the swallow is an "open" type; the epiglottis always inverts in normal individuals regardless of the type of swallow ("open

Intrapleural positioning of esophagus for treatment of swallowing-induced arrhythmia.

Swallowing-induced atrial tachycardia is a rare phenomenon generally assumed to be caused by abnormal parasympathetic reflexes arising in the esophagus or pharynx. We describe a patient with intractable swallow tachycardia. Since certain features of the case suggested a mechanical rather than a reflex mechanism, he was treated by intrapleural repositioning of the esophagus to effect physical separation of esophagus and left atrium. Ten months after an uncomplicated procedure, the patient remains asymptomatic and free of arrhythmia.

Influence of Bubble-Containing Thickened Liquid on Swallowing Dynamics.

Thickened liquid (TL) is commonly used to aid swallowing and prevent aspiration in dysphagia patients. We hypothesized that incorporating air bubbles into TL (TLB) could reduce viscosity and pharyngeal residue, improving swallowing dynamics. This study included 24 adults (17 males, 7 females; mean age: 75.8 ± 11.4 years) with Dysphagia Severity Scale scores of 3 or 4, excluding those with laryngeal penetration or aspiration when swallowing 4 mL of TL. Test samples consisted of TL with 3% wt/vol thickening agent and TLB. Type E viscosity and texture profile analysis were conducted. The subjects

Swallowing and Communication in Cockayne Syndrome: Clinical Characteristics and Management.

Cockayne syndrome (CS) is an ultrarare genetic disorder associated with genes encoding proteins involved in DNA repair. The clinical course of CS involves neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative features, including swallowing and communication impairments. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the literature relating to deglutition and communication in individuals with CS to guide management of this complex disease and highlight clinical knowledge gaps. Pertinent articles and case reports on CS, published between 1990 and 2024, were reviewed in three domains: etiology, dysphagi

Food Classification for Swallowing Disorders Perception by Senior Population.

Texture-modified diets (TMDs) contain safe foods for individuals with dysphagia, such as soft solids or thick liquids. Considering the large population affected by dysphagia, especially older adults, it is essential to accurately measure the physical properties of these foods. The rheological and textural characteristics defined in major dysphagia guidelines-IDDSI, BDA, and the Smile Care System-are based on the experience and perception of health experts, but it is mostly unknown to which physical parameter corresponds to the classification. It is also uncertain whether older adults with dysp

Evaluation of swallow function in patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

PURPOSE: Children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) are vulnerable to lung injury secondary to aspiration and have an elevated risk of dysphagia. This study assesses video fluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) utilization to detect aspiration and aims to identify prenatal indicators of swallow dysfunction in infants with CDH. METHODS: This is a single center, retrospective observational study of infants with CDH born between January 2014 and October 2022. VFSS results were analyzed, along with potential associations between aspiration and lung-to-head ratio (LHR) or the presence of polyh
