Comparison of density and output of sweat gland in tropical Africans and temperate Koreans.

Modification of sweating could be due to changes in activated sweat gland density (ASGD) and/or activated sweat gland output (ASGO). The present study determined regional and inter-ethnic differences in ASGD and ASGO during passive heating between tropical natives (African, n=22) and temperate natives (Republic of Korean, n=25). Heat load was carried out by immersing the half body into a hot water bath for 30min. Tympanic temperature (Tty) and skin temperature (Ts) were measured. Mean body temperature (mTb) was calculated. Sudomotor activities including sweat onset time, sweat rate, ASGD, and …

Evaluation of compensatory sweating after bilateral thoracoscopic sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis.

The study is a retrospective review of 60 patients undergoing bilateral T2-T3 thoracoscopic sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis in our department between 1997 and 2003. The study was based on a telephone questionnaire and medical chart review. Forty patients (67%) replied to the questionnaire and were included in the study. Postoperative complications, therapeutic results, patient satisfaction, and the severity of compensatory sweating (CS) were assessed. In all patients both palms were dry at the end of surgery. Postoperative complications included permanent unilateral Horner syndrome, wou…

Ischaemia in working muscles potentiates the exercise-induced sweating response in man.

AIM: The purpose was to examine whether graded ischaemia in the working muscles affects the rate of sweating and the control of exercise core temperature. METHODS: Eight subjects performed cycle ergometry exercise in the supine position with (ischaemic exercise) and without (control exercise) restriction of blood flow in the contracting muscles, accomplished by exposure of the legs to a supra-atmospheric pressure of 6.6 kPa. Each subject performed one exhaustive incremental work rate trial and one steady-state exercise trial (at 33% of control peak work rate), in both the control and ischaemi…

Absent innervation of skin and sweat glands in congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis.

OBJECTIVES: A case of a 10-year-old girl with congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA) is reported. METHODS AND RESULTS: Parents referred several hyperpyretic episodes without sweating occurring since birth, and insensitivity to pain, noticed when the child was 2 years old. Her body had many bruises and scars, bone fractures and signs of self-mutilation. Neurological examination was normal except for insensitivity to pain. Her IQ was 52. Electrical and tactile sensory nerve conduction velocities were normal. The patient was unable to detect thermal stimuli. Histamine injection …

Sweating and skin temperature responses of normal and anhidrotic horses to intravenous adrenaline.

Anhidrosis has been recognised for over half a century, but despite some excellent epidemiological studies, there has been little progress in understanding the aetiology of the condition. Using a modified ventilated capsule, we obtained dynamic, quantitative data on sweating responses in anhidrotic horses and normal sweating controls from the same environment. Ten horses with current seasonal anhidrosis and 10 matched normal sweating controls were selected. Each horse was given two 10 min infusions of 1 and 2 micrograms/kg/min adrenaline, separated by at least 6 h. Sweating responses and skin …

Regional differences in the effect of exercise intensity on thermoregulatory sweating and cutaneous vasodilation.

To investigate regional body differences in the effect of exercise intensity on the thermoregulatory sweating response, nine healthy male subjects (23.2 +/- 0.4 year) cycled at 35, 50 and 65% of their maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) for 30 min at an ambient temperature of 28.3 +/- 0.2 degrees C and a relative humidity of 42.6 +/- 2.4%. Local sweating rate (msw) on the forehead, chest, back, forearm and thigh increased significantly with increases in the exercise intensity from 35 to 50% VO2max and from 50 to 65% VO2max (P < 0.05). The mean values for the density of activated sweat glands (ASG) at 5…

Cold-induced profuse sweating on back and chest. A new genetic entity?

Two sisters whose parents shared a grandfather had cold-induced sweating. Since childhood they had sweated profusely from the back and chest when exposed to environmental temperatures of 18 degrees to 7 degrees C. They had additional abnormalities--e.g., high palate and inability fully to extend the elbows--which neither their parents nor their sibs shared. The cold-induced sweating, which could not be stopped by a beta-adrenergic blocking agent, was abolished by postganglionic blockade with atropine sulphate. This indicates the possibility of a peripheral mechanism.

The response of the sweat glands of the newborn baby to thermal stimuli and to intradermal acetylcholine.

1. Measurements of evaporative sweat loss were made on fifty-six premature and full-term babies 1-67 days after birth with an infra-red analyser and a ventilated capsule placed on the thigh. Measurements were also made of total evaporative water loss while in a closed metabolic chamber and of the regional distribution of sweating with starch-iodine paper.2. No sweating to thermal stimuli could be detected in infants of less than 210 days post-conceptual age, even when rectal temperature rose as high as 37.8 degrees C. In older infants sweat was detected first on the forehead and temple, later …

Comparison of Sweated and Non-Sweated Ethanol Extracts of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge. (Danshen) Effects on Human and Rat Hepatic UDP-Glucuronosyltransferase and Preclinic Herb-Drug Interaction Potential Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The ethanol of Danshen (DEE) preparation has been widely used to treat cardiac-cerebral disease and cancer. Sweating is one of the primary processing methods of Danshen, which greatly influences its quality and pharmacological properties. Sweated and non-sweated DEE preparation combined with various synthetic drugs, add up the possibility of herbal-drug interactions. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the effects of sweated and non-sweated DEE on human and rat hepatic UGT enzyme expression and activity and proposed a potential mechanism. METHODS: The expression of two processed DEE o…

Wearable and Multimodal Electrochemical Hydrogel Sensor for Real-Time Non-Invasive Sweat Glucose Monitoring.

Noninvasive sweat glucose monitoring is a promising strategy for real-time health management. In this study, we developed a flexible electrochemical sensor platform based on gold nanorods@polylysine-glucose oxidase (AuNRs@PLL-GOx) composite hydrogel, which enables noninvasive, highly sensitive, and multimode detection of sweat glucose. The polylysine (PLL) interfacial layer provides abundant amino groups for glucose oxidase (GOx) immobilization, improves the dispersion of gold nanorods (AuNRs) within the hydrogel matrix, and facilitates interfacial charge transport by maintaining close contact…
