BACKGROUND: The initiation of clinical pig xenotransplantation trials offers the prospect of alleviating global organ shortage. However, current knowledge of swine-derived microorganisms relevant to xenotransplantation remains fragmented due to the limited availability of data on infections.
OBJECTIVE: This review provides a comprehensive understanding of risks posed by porcine pathogens in xenotransplantation by integrating their pathogenic characteristics with transplantation relevance.
METHODS: The xenosis potential of swine pathogens was assessed based on their epidemiology and biologica…

Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira, affecting humans and a broad range of domestic and wild animals, which act as maintenance or incidental hosts. In swine, infection is associated with reproductive losses and significant economic impact. Transmission occurs through direct or indirect contact with contaminated urine, soil, or water. In small-scale and extensive production systems, frequent exposure to mud, stagnant water, and wildlife increases the risk of infection with multiple Leptospira serovars, complicating diagnosis. R…

BACKGROUND: The recently identified swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome (SINS) affects tail, ears, teats, coronary bands, claws and heels of affected individuals. The primarily endogenous syndrome is based on vasculitis, thrombosis, and intimal proliferation, involving defence cells, interleukins, chemokines, and acute phase proteins and accompanied by alterations in clinical chemistry, metabolome, and liver transcriptome. The complexity of metabolic alterations and the influence of the boar led to hypothesize a polygenic architecture of SINS. This should be investigated by a transcriptom…

The optimization of processes associated with artificial insemination (AI) is of great importance for the success of the pig industry. Over the last two decades, great reproductive performance has been achieved, making further significant progress limited. Optimizing the AI program, however, is essential to the pig industry's sustainability. Thus, the aim is not only to reduce the number of sperm cells used per estrous sow but also to improve some practical management in sow farms and boar studs to transform the high reproductive performance to a more efficient program. As productivity is main

The spread of the African swine fever virus (ASF virus) genotype ii in the Eurasian region has been very successful and often inexplicable. The virus spreads rapidly and persists in areas with wild boar populations, but areas without feral pig populations are also affected. The virus has shown the ability to survive for a long time in the environment without a population of susceptible hosts, both pigs and Ornithodoros soft ticks. Published data indicated that ASF viruses persist significantly longer in an environment with some freshwater snails (especially Pomacea bridgesii, Tarebia granifera…

To investigate the effects of aeration pretreatment on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure, five pretreatment groups were established with dissolved oxygen (DO) in each group set to 0.0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.4, and 2.0 mg/L, respectively. The results demonstrated that compared to the non-aeration group, methane production increased to varying degrees with different aeration pretreatments (AP), with a maximum increase of 27.98% (DO = 2.0 mg/L). AP reduced the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) content of biogas. The H2S concentration in the DO = 2.0 mg/L was only 0.209%, and this represented an increased H…

Swine are a primary source for the emergence of pandemic influenza A viruses. The intensification of swine production, along with global trade, has amplified the transmission and zoonotic risk of swine influenza A virus (swIAV). Effective surveillance is essential to uncover emerging virus strains; however gaps remain in our understanding of the swIAV genomic landscape in Southeast Asia. More than 4,000 nasal swabs were collected from pigs in Cambodia, yielding 72 IAV-positive samples by RT-qPCR and 45 genomic sequences. We unmasked the cocirculation of multiple lineages of genetically diverse…

African swine fever virus (ASFV) can accumulate and survive in leeches for a long time. The reasons for the survival of ASFV in leeches are not entirely clear. Here, we elucidate the virus survival pathway in infected leeches. One of the questions reported previously is addressed in this article. How the virus concentration in the body of the leech is equal to or higher than in the water infected with ASFV? Examination of blood swallowed by leeches reveals that the blood cells retain their morphological characteristics for several weeks. It can explain the long-term persistence of the high lev…

In view of the intensive development of the swine industry, monitoring and surveillance of infectious diseases require low-cost, effective, and representative population sampling methods. We present herein the state of knowledge, to date, in the use of alternative strategies in the monitoring of swine health. Blood sampling, the most commonly used method in veterinary medicine to obtain samples for monitoring swine health, is labor-intensive and expensive, which has resulted in a search for alternative sampling strategies. Oral fluid (OF) is a good alternative to serum for pooled sample analys…

Novel H1N2 influenza A viruses (IAVs) in swine have been identified in Chile co-circulating with pandemic H1N1 2009-like (A(H1N1)pdm09-like) viruses. The objective of this study was to characterize antigenically the swine H1 IAVs circulating in Chile. Genetic analysis based on the HA1 domain and antigenic analysis by hemagglutination inhibition assay were carried out. Three antigenic clusters were identified, named Chilean H1 A (ChH1A), Chilean H1 B (ChH1B), and A(H1N1)pdm09-like. The antigenic sites of ChH1A and ChH1B strains were 10-60% distant from those of commercial vaccine strains at the…

Influenza viruses (IV) are one of the major threats to human and animal health worldwide due to the variety of species they affect. Pigs play an important role in IV ecology as the "mixing vessel," since they can be infected by swine, avian and human IV, allowing the appearance of new subtypes. Human viruses originated in swine are known as IV of swine origin or swine influenza virus (SwIV) variants. In this study, we identified knowledge tendencies of SwIV and assessed potential bias in the literature caused by these variants. We identified the most mentioned SwIV variants and manually review…

Influenza A viruses cause acute respiratory infections in swine that result in significant economic losses for global pig production. Currently, three different subtypes of influenza A viruses of swine (IAV-S) co-circulate worldwide: H1N1, H3N2, and H1N2. However, the origin, genetic background and antigenic properties of those IAV-S vary considerably from region to region. Pigs could also have a role in the adaptation of avian influenza A viruses to humans and other mammalian hosts, either as intermediate hosts in which avian influenza viruses may adapt to humans, or as a "mixing vessel" in w…

BACKGROUND: While porcine biological hazards have had the potential to be transmitted through feed and feed mills for decades, the emerging threat of foreign animal disease has elevated the concern that these may enter or be transmitted throughout the domestic swine herd via a feed vehicle.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this review was to describe the current classification for emerging porcine biological pathogen transmission through the feed supply chain so resources can be best directed towards those of highest risk.
METHODS: By assessing the pathogen severity to pigs and the probability of path…

African swine fever (ASF) is an acute, highly contagious and deadly viral haemorrhagic disease of domestic pigs caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV). In ASF endemic countries, there are an increasing number of reports on circulating ASFV strains with different levels of virulence causing a broad range of clinical symptoms in susceptible animals. Tanzania, where ASFV is endemic since 2001, recorded several outbreaks including symptomatic and asymptomatic cases between 2015 and 2017. We collected 35 clinical samples from four outbreaks for diagnostic confirmation and sequenced the partial …
